Path of Exile Chromatic Orb Wiki & Tips

What is Chromatic Orb in PoE?

Chromatic Orb is a PoE currency item that allows you to change the colors of sockets on weapons or pieces of armor. You can obtain Chromatic Orbs by different means. One way is by selling an item with linked red, green, and blue sockets to any vendor. Additionally, Chromatic Orbs can also drop from monsters in the game. They are primarily used for socket coloring and can be quite useful when you want to adjust the socket colors on your equipment.

How To Use Chromatic Orb in Path of Exile?

To use a Chromatic Orb in Path of Exile, you need to:

  • Right-click the Chromatic Orb in your inventory.

  • Left-click the item with the sockets you want to recolor.

  • The Chromatic Orb will then recolor the sockets on the item randomly. The probability of each color is based on the item's item level and the number of sockets it has.

For example, a level 1 item with 3 sockets has a 25% chance of each socket being red, green, or blue. A level 75 item with 6 sockets has a 10% chance of each socket being red, green, or blue, and a 5% chance of each socket being white.

You can use multiple Chromatic Orbs to try to get the desired color combination. However, it is important to note that the more you use, the more expensive it will become.

Here are some tips for using Chromatic Orbs:

  • Use them on items with high item levels. This will increase the chances of getting the desired color combination.

  • Use them on items with fewer sockets. This will also increase the chances of getting the desired color combination.

  • Use them on items with the correct attribute requirements. This will help you avoid getting sockets that you can't use.

  • If you are trying to get a specific color combination, you can use a Vorici's Calculator to see the odds of getting it.

PoE Chromatic Orb Recipe

Here is the Chromatic Orb recipe in Path of Exile:

  • Vendor Recipe: Sell an item with 3 linked sockets colored green-red-blue (order doesn't matter. Can be more sockets) and get 1 Chromatic Orb.

For example, you can sell a 3-socket item with the colors green, red, and blue in any order, and you will get 1 Chromatic Orb in return. You can also sell an item with more than 3 sockets, as long as the first 3 sockets are green-red-blue.

This is a good way to get Chromatic Orbs if you are low on them. However, it is important to note that the item you sell must be able to be vendored. This means that it cannot be corrupted, enchanted, or have any other modifiers that prevent it from being vendored.

Chromatic Orb Possibilities - What are the Odds of Recoloring Your Sockets?

Chromatic Orbs reroll the socket colors on items at random while maintaining the current number of linked sockets.

  • The chance of obtaining a specific color combination depends on the total number of potential combinations for that item's number of sockets. For example, a 4-socket item has 24 possible combinations. This means the odds of rolling a desired 4-socket combo is 1/24, which equates to around a 4.17% probability.

  • Items with more sockets exponentially increase the number of combinations. A 5-socket item has 120 possible outcomes, while a 6-socket jumps all the way to 720 combinations. Needless to say, the odds of success go down significantly as sockets increase.

  • On average, players can expect to use around 20-25 Chromatics for 4-socket items, 50-70 for 5-sockets, and 150-200 for a perfect 6-socket colored roll. These numbers are based on statistical probabilities converging with increased samples.

  • It's also important to consider breakpoints where using Jeweler's Orbs instead may raise your chances of the desired number of sockets/links quicker than spamming Chromatics.
