A Cartographer's Chisel is a currency item in Path of Exile that is used to improve the quality of a map. The amount of quality given depends on the rarity of the map. Cartographer's Chisels are an uncommon item that can be found starting at item level 52. They can be dropped by slain monsters, chests, and destructible containers. Cartographer's Chisels may also be found in Artisan's Strongboxes. Zana, Master Cartographer will also sell 20 Cartographer's Chisels in exchange for 12 Chaos Orbs as one the possible daily stock. The stock would only refresh after doing her mission. A Cartographer's Chisel can also be obtained by using the following vendor recipe:
1× Stone Hammer / Rock Breaker / Gavel with 20% quality
1× Any Map
Maps that have combined quality equal or greater than 40%.
It is advisable to only spend Cartographer's Chisels on higher level maps, as the more item quantity on a low level map translates to negligible gains. Furthermore, since Chisels are relatively uncommon, it is usually recommended to only spend them on normal maps rather than magic or rare maps. Also, once a map is 20% it stays 20% even when scoured or changed in any other way.
High-tier Maps: Cartographer's Chisels are often used on high-tier maps, especially those of Tier 14 and above. The increased map quality enhances the rewards and loot drops within the map, making it more profitable and providing a potentially higher challenge.
Atlas Completion: As you progress through the Atlas of Worlds, the in-game map system, using Cartographer's Chisels can be beneficial for completing and sustaining map progression. Increasing the quality of your maps increases the chances of higher-tier maps dropping as well.
Effective Farming: If you are specifically farming a particular map for its divination cards, unique items, or other valuable drops, using Cartographer's Chisels on that specific map can increase the chances of obtaining better rewards.
Map Trading: Cartographer's Chisels can also be used as a form of Path of Exile currency for map trading with other players. If you have excess Cartographer's Chisels or are in need of specific maps, trading them can facilitate progress within the Atlas and help you obtain maps you need.
The drop rate of Cartographer's Chisels in Path of Exile is not fixed or static. Like most currency items in the game, the drop rate of Cartographer's Chisels is determined by various factors, including the item quantity and item rarity modifiers on the area you are farming, your character's increased item quantity and rarity modifiers, and other sources of increased currency drop rate, such as certain character passives, items, and supportive skills.
Generally, Cartographer's Chisels have a moderate drop rate compared to more common currency items like Scrolls of Wisdom or Orb of Transmutation. They are more commonly found in higher-level maps or areas with increased item quantity and rarity modifiers.
