WoW: Forever is shaping up to make tanking much more diverse than traditional Vanilla WoW. The three tanks—Paladin, Druid, and Warrior—are all receiving meaningful changes, but they are being pushed toward different strengths rather than simply competing for the same role. In this Warcraft Forever, we are ranking best tanks based on their current toolkits, potential builds, playstyles, and overall tanking potential.

WoW Forever Tank Tier List - Best Tanks in Warcraft Forever

While it is still too early to determine the final meta, the current beta build already gives us a good idea of how each tank could perform. Blizzard has also made it clear that threat will matter in WoW Forever, meaning tanks will need to carefully balance offensive throughput, defensive utility, survivability, and threat generation.

1. Paladin – S Tier

Paladin looks like the most interesting tank in WoW Forever because it has the greatest build flexibility. The biggest change is Seal of Fury, which becomes the Paladin's dedicated tanking seal. It deals a flat amount of damage with melee attacks and provides a small absorb. When judged, it deals damage and taunts the target, effectively replacing the traditional Paladin taunt.

Paladin playstyle

Paladin is likely to excel at AoE tanking + utility + flexible builds + group support. The class also retains its powerful Blessing utility, while Blessings now last one hour, making Paladins less dependent on constantly rebuffing the group.

Why S Tier?
Paladin appears to have the highest overall ceiling because it can adapt its talents and gear to different situations. Its main weakness is the awkward Judgment-based taunt system, which could become a serious problem if encounter mechanics demand frequent taunting.

2. Warrior – A Tier

Warriors remain extremely strong, but WoW Forever appears to be pushing them toward a more traditional one-handed weapon + shield tanking style. This is an important change from some of the famous Vanilla Warrior tank builds. A number of Protection talents have threat bonuses that only function while using a shield. That strongly encourages Warriors to tank with a shield rather than relying on two-handed or dual-wield setups.

Warrior talent possibilities

A conventional build could go deep into Protection and then invest remaining points into:

Arms: Deep Wounds + Impale

or

Fury: Enrage and additional offensive power

There may also be a dungeon-oriented build that takes Sweeping Strikes instead of Shield Slam. Because dungeon tanking involves multiple targets and frequent Cleave usage, this could provide significant additional damage and threat.

Warrior playstyle

Warrior is likely to be the most familiar tank:

Shield tanking + strong Rage generation + reliable mitigation + consistent single-target threat

The important difference is that WoW Forever appears to reward Warriors more strongly for actually using their shield.

Why A Tier?

Warrior remains an extremely safe all-around choice. It doesn't appear to receive the dramatic redesign that Paladin does, but that's partly because Warriors were already excellent Vanilla tanks. Their biggest advantage is consistency rather than flexibility.

3. Druid – A Tier

Druid is arguably the simplest of the three tanks, but that doesn't mean it is weak. Its identity is much clearer:

high durability + strong sustained threat + powerful three-target cleave

Druids receive several abilities that previously appeared in later expansions.

Mangle and Lacerate become part of the standard Bear rotation. Mangle is primarily a direct damage ability in this version rather than functioning exactly like its later-expansion counterpart.

Frenzied Regeneration is also changed and can restore up to 100% of the Druid's health over its duration, giving Bears a potentially powerful self-healing tool.

Berserk adds another major offensive cooldown. With a three-minute cooldown and 15-second duration, it allows the Druid to spam Mangle against up to three targets.

Meanwhile, Omen of Clarity becomes part of the base toolkit.

Druid playstyle

Druid is probably the most straightforward tank:

generate Rage → maintain threat → use Mangle/Lacerate/Swipe → survive through enormous durability

Their biggest strength is raw toughness. They also look particularly strong when tanking several targets, although Bears will likely need to rely heavily on tab-targeting to maintain threat across larger packs.

Druid builds

Druid has less build flexibility than Paladin. A dedicated Bear could invest into other trees for things such as hit chance and additional damage, while a more hybrid-oriented player could spend more points in Feral to gain talents such as the new King of the Jungle.

The fundamental choice is therefore less about radically different tank builds and more about:

"How dedicated do I want to be to Bear tanking versus Cat/utility?"

Why A Tier?

Druid has an excellent combination of survivability, sustained threat, and cleave. It lacks the utility and build diversity of Paladin, but its straightforward design could make it one of the most reliable tanks.

WoW Forever Best Tanks

Paladin

Best for: AoE tanking, utility, flexible builds, theorycrafting

Paladin has the highest potential ceiling. The redesigned Protection tree provides numerous ways to build the character, and its utility remains excellent. The biggest concern is the Judgment-based taunt.

Warrior

Best for: Traditional tanking, single-target threat, reliable mitigation

Warrior is the safest "classic tank" choice. It remains extremely powerful while WoW Forever adds several quality-of-life improvements. Shield-based Protection builds are likely to become particularly important.

Druid

Best for: Durability, sustained threat, cleave, simpler gameplay

Druid sacrifices some flexibility for consistency. Bears look considerably more polished than their Vanilla counterparts and should be particularly comfortable in dungeon content.
