Midnight 12.1 Melee Tier List - Best Melee DPS & Most Fun in WoW 12.1

July 06, 2026 WoW Classic Guides

For many players, choosing a melee DPS in WoW Midnight Patch 12.1 isn't just about chasing the highest damage numbers—it's about finding a spec that feels rewarding to play every time you log in. Today, we got you 2 Midnight 12.1 melee DPS tier lists for Season 2.

Midnight 12.1 Best Melee - WOW Midnight 12.1 Melee Tier List

With Season 2 introducing new tier sets, Hero Talent updates, rotational adjustments, and major class tuning, Blizzard has significantly reshaped the melee landscape. Some specs have emerged as top-tier performers thanks to powerful new synergies, while others stand out because of their fluid gameplay, engaging mechanics, and high skill ceilings. Whether you're looking for the strongest melee DPS for raids and Mythic+, or simply searching for the most enjoyable spec to main throughout the season, this Midnight 12.1 Melee DPS Tier List breaks down both performance and fun factor to help you find the perfect class for Season 2. From the explosive power of Retribution Paladin and Enhancement Shaman to the mastery-driven gameplay of Outlaw Rogue and the undead army fantasy of Unholy Death Knight, here's how every melee spec currently ranks on the Patch 12.1 PTR.

Midnight 12.1 Melee DPS Tier List

Based on current PTR testing, tier set design, Hero Talent interactions, rotational depth, and expected Mythic+ performance, the melee DPS landscape in WoW Midnight 12.1 is shaping up to be one of the most diverse we've seen in a long time. Several specs received meaningful gameplay improvements through new tier sets, while others continue to rely on already strong foundations. Here's how the melee rankings currently look heading into Season 2.

S-Tier

Retribution Paladin

Retribution Paladin remains one of the biggest winners of Patch 12.1. The new tier set is both powerful and enjoyable, enhancing the spec's natural flow without adding unnecessary complexity. Ret continues to offer exceptional burst AoE, strong priority-target damage, excellent survivability, blessings, off-healing, and utility. Whether in raids or Mythic+, it brings everything a melee DPS could want while maintaining a satisfying rotation.

Enhancement Shaman

Enhancement continues to be one of the most fun and rewarding melee specs in the game. Fast-paced gameplay, frequent procs, strong cleave, and excellent utility make it a constant contender. The spec rewards mastery without becoming overwhelming, and its Hero Talent interactions keep gameplay engaging throughout every encounter.

Unholy Death Knight

Unholy's new Lord of the Dead interactions significantly increase the value of its pet army. The spec feels like an auto-battler where every ghoul, Magus, and summoned minion contributes meaningful damage. Strong AoE scaling, excellent priority damage, and a unique playstyle help Unholy stand out as one of the strongest melee options in Season 2.

Havoc Demon Hunter

Havoc regains much of the fluid gameplay that players have wanted for years. The spec's new tier set creates satisfying ability chains while maintaining its trademark mobility and fast-paced combat. Even though tuning may still change, the overall gameplay experience feels significantly improved compared to previous seasons.

Outlaw Rogue

Outlaw remains one of the deepest and most skill-expressive specs in the game. High APM gameplay, cooldown optimization, and complex decision-making allow experienced players to continuously improve. The spec rewards mastery more than almost any other melee class, making it a favorite among players who enjoy high-skill gameplay.

A-Tier

Survival Hunter

Survival continues to offer a unique melee-ranged hybrid playstyle. Strong burst windows, excellent mobility, and solid utility make it highly effective in Mythic+. While it may not have the same ceiling as S-Tier specs, it remains one of the most enjoyable and versatile melee options.

Windwalker Monk

Windwalker remains fluid, mobile, and satisfying to play. The spec excels at burst AoE and target swapping while maintaining one of the smoothest combat flows among melee classes. It lacks some of the standout strengths of the top-tier specs but remains highly enjoyable.

Subtlety Rogue

Subtlety offers exceptional burst damage and rewarding cooldown management. Shadow Dance windows remain one of the most satisfying gameplay mechanics in WoW. However, its learning curve and setup requirements keep it slightly below the absolute top tier.

Fury Warrior

Fury continues to deliver nonstop action and one of the fastest combat styles in the game. The spec remains incredibly fun, though some players feel the gameplay lacks meaningful decision-making compared to more complex melee classes.

Frost Death Knight

Frost DK's massive damage improvements make it extremely strong on PTR. However, much of that power comes from passive effects and automated damage sources rather than active rotational depth. The numbers are excellent, but the gameplay itself is less engaging than many other melee specs.

B-Tier

Arms Warrior

Arms remains a solid and reliable spec with strong weapon-based gameplay and impactful abilities. However, it lacks the exciting new mechanics and tier set interactions that help elevate other melee specs in Season 2.

Assassination Rogue

Assassination offers strong thematic gameplay and satisfying DoT management, but it hasn't received the same level of exciting innovation seen in other Rogue specializations. The spec remains effective but feels somewhat unchanged.

Feral Druid

Feral continues to reward skilled players who enjoy managing bleeds and resources. While capable of excellent performance, its complexity and slower ramp-up make it less accessible and less immediately rewarding than many competing melee options.

Most Fun Midnight 12.1 Melee DPS Tier List

This ranking isn't about raw DPS numbers, raid logs, or Mythic+ rankings. It's about one thing: which melee specs are the most enjoyable to play in Midnight 12.1. Factors include rotational flow, Hero Talent design, tier set interactions, build variety, skill expression, and overall gameplay satisfaction.

S-Tier

Retribution Paladin

Retribution Paladin is arguably the biggest winner in terms of fun factor. The new Season 2 tier set creates rewarding gameplay loops, abilities flow naturally into one another, and the spec delivers constant feedback through impactful visuals and satisfying button presses.

Enhancement Shaman

Enhancement remains one of WoW's most engaging melee specs. The rotation constantly reacts to procs, cooldowns, and resource changes. Every pull feels slightly different, keeping gameplay fresh even after hundreds of hours. Enhancement has been a fan favorite for years and 12.1 continues that tradition.

Outlaw Rogue

Outlaw remains one of the highest-skill-ceiling specs in the game. Players who enjoy mastering complex interactions, managing buffs, and maximizing uptime will find endless depth here. It's not beginner-friendly, but experienced players often consider Outlaw one of the most satisfying specs in WoW.

Havoc Demon Hunter

After several expansions of simplification, Havoc finally regains some of the gameplay depth players have been asking for. The spec feels fluid, mobile, and aggressive again. For players who enjoy speed and movement, Havoc is hard to beat.

A-Tier

Unholy Death Knight

The new Lord of the Dead interactions transform Unholy into an army commander fantasy. Watching waves of undead continuously contribute damage feels incredibly satisfying.

Subtlety Rogue

Sub Rogue remains one of the most technical melee specs. Its stealth-based gameplay rewards planning and execution more than almost any other class.

Survival Hunter

Survival continues to be one of WoW's most underrated specs. Its hybrid melee-ranged toolkit creates a unique playstyle no other melee spec offers.

Fury Warrior

Fury is pure action. The rotation never slows down, abilities hit constantly, and downtime is almost nonexistent. Its biggest weakness is a lack of rotational depth compared to higher-ranked specs.

B-Tier

Frost Death Knight

Ironically one of the strongest PTR performers may not be one of the most fun. Most of Frost's new power comes from passive damage sources such as Remorseless Winter and Icy Death Torrent rather than active rotational decisions. The numbers are excellent, but the gameplay isn't as engaging as other melee specs.

Arms Warrior

Arms remains solid and methodical but lacks major innovations in 12.1. Players who enjoy deliberate gameplay will still appreciate it, but it doesn't feel significantly improved.

Windwalker Monk

Windwalker is still enjoyable thanks to its combo system, but compared to some of the exciting redesigns elsewhere, it doesn't stand out as much on the PTR.

Feral Druid

Feral remains rewarding for dedicated players, but maintaining multiple DoTs and managing resources can feel more like work than fun for some players.

Assassination Rogue

Strong thematic identity, but gameplay hasn't evolved significantly. It remains enjoyable for Rogue enthusiasts while lacking the excitement of Outlaw or Subtlety.
