The latest World of Warcraft: Midnight 12.1 PTR update has dramatically reshaped the class landscape, introducing major buffs, nerfs, and talent reworks that are already influencing early meta predictions. While additional tuning is still expected before launch, several clear winners and losers have emerged from the latest testing cycle.
WoW Midnight 12.1 Best DPS, Tanks, Healers - Midnight 12.1 Tier List
Protection Paladin, Retribution Paladin, Beast Mastery Hunter, Restoration Druid, and Shadow Priest received substantial improvements that could propel them to the top of both Mythic+ and raid content. Meanwhile, specs such as Fire Mage, Outlaw Rogue, and Devour Demon Hunter are struggling with design issues, nerfs, or a lack of meaningful updates, leaving many players concerned about their competitive viability heading into Patch 12.1. In this WoW Midnight 12.1 Tier List, we'll rank every class and specialization based on PTR performance, tuning changes, utility, survivability, and overall potential in both PvE and Mythic+ environments.
WoW Midnight 12.1 Tier List
S Tier
Protection Paladin (Tank)
Protection Paladin is the undisputed biggest winner of the entire patch. Blizzard delivered significant damage buffs across nearly every core ability while simultaneously improving survivability through stronger Ardent Defender and Word of Glory healing. The addition of overhealing shields further enhances the spec's durability.
Retribution Paladin (Melee DPS)
Retribution Paladin received substantial buffs across its entire damage toolkit. Although Hammer of Light was toned down, nearly every other offensive ability gained power. Key improvements include:
• Additional Ardent War proc storage
• Massive baseline damage increases
• More build diversity
• Improved burst and sustained damage
Ret Paladin looks positioned to become one of the strongest melee DPS specs in Midnight.
Beast Mastery Hunter (Ranged DPS)
Beast Mastery Hunter received exactly the type of buffs the specialization needed. Most damage sources outside of Bestial Wrath were improved, creating stronger overall sustained damage. The Beast Cleave changes are especially impactful, allowing BM Hunters to maintain near-permanent AoE pressure with minimal effort. Strengths include:
• Consistent damage profile
• Excellent mobility
• Strong cleave potential
• Easy execution
Expect BM Hunter to become one of the safest and strongest ranged DPS picks in 12.1.
Restoration Druid (Healer)
Restoration Druid may be the biggest healer winner of the patch. Major improvements include:
• Tree of Life buffs
• Stronger Tranquility
• New talent options
• Reduced mana costs
• Better Regrowth interactions
The revamped Tranquility now provides powerful healing and absorption effects while eliminating knockback concerns, making it one of the most valuable healing cooldowns available.
Shadow Priest (Ranged DPS)
Shadow Priest received a collection of changes that significantly strengthen both AoE and single-target performance. Highlights include:
• New Shadowy Apparition explosion talent
• Additional Void Volley casts
• Extended Voidform uptime
• Strong Archon synergy
• Excellent tier set bonuses
The result is a spec with improved scaling, stronger Mythic+ performance, and better raid utility.
A Tier
Brewmaster Monk
Brewmaster was already one of the strongest tanks in Season 1 and somehow avoided meaningful nerfs. Small buffs further improve an already powerful toolkit.
Augmentation Evoker
Sometimes the biggest buff is receiving no nerfs. Augmentation remains one of the most desirable support DPS specs thanks to its unmatched group utility and scaling potential.
Arcane Mage
Arcane gains several interesting updates, including the new Prismatic Bolt talent and redesigned Arcane Pulse. While not game-changing, these additions improve gameplay flow and damage consistency.
Fury Warrior
Fury Warrior benefits from several welcome updates:
• Improved Whirlwind gameplay
• Stronger AoE options
• Better Mountain Thane synergy
• Enhanced sustained damage
The spec looks significantly healthier than before.
Discipline Priest
Discipline gains more reliable gameplay through reduced proc dependency and stronger defensive interactions. It remains one of the strongest healer options for coordinated groups.
Assassination Rogue
Although some signature abilities received nerfs, energy generation improvements and stronger baseline abilities help offset those losses. Assassination may not dominate the meta, but it appears well-positioned heading into launch.
Elemental Shaman
Despite nerfs to Ascendance and Tempest, broad damage increases and an impressive tier set keep Elemental highly competitive.
B Tier
Druid (Balance & Feral)
Both DPS Druid specs received mixed changes. Balance suffers from reduced Astral Power generation, while Feral continues to struggle with damage outside major cooldown windows. They remain playable but currently trail the top performers.
Devastation Evoker
The new Unbound Flame talent helps, but Devastation still lacks the comprehensive improvements many players hoped for.
Preservation Evoker
Healing adjustments create some positives, but significant Dream Breath nerfs offset much of the excitement.
Windwalker Monk
Several damage buffs improve single-target performance, though larger Hero Talent issues remain unresolved.
C Tier
Several specs received minimal adjustments and currently sit in the "waiting room" category:
• Blood Death Knight
• Frost Death Knight
• Havoc Demon Hunter
• Guardian Druid
• Frost Mage
• Holy Paladin
• Holy Priest
• Subtlety Rogue
• Enhancement Shaman
• Restoration Shaman
• Affliction Warlock
• Demonology Warlock
• Destruction Warlock
• Protection Warrior
These specs aren't necessarily weak, but nothing in the current PTR build suggests they will become major meta contenders.
D Tier
Devour Demon Hunter
One of the most controversial changes of the PTR. Significant reductions to Void Meta scaling have weakened one of the spec's strongest mechanics. While some damage was redistributed elsewhere, many testers believe the overall result is a net loss.
Fire Mage
Fire Mage remains plagued by design concerns. The removal of beloved gameplay interactions combined with continued reliance on Pyroclasm leaves many longtime Fire players disappointed. The spec desperately needs a broader redesign rather than simple numerical tuning.
Outlaw Rogue
Outlaw continues to suffer from:
• Excessive RNG
• Extremely high APM requirements
• Low player popularity
• Unrewarding gameplay loops
Without significant changes, Outlaw appears destined to remain one of the least-played DPS specs in the game.
