Diablo 4 Season 8 Best Forgotten Souls Farm Locations & Methods

5/12/2025 11:15:54 AM

In Diablo 4, Forgotten Souls are rare crafting materials used to upgrade and reroll Ancestral items, but they are running out very quickly in Season 8, especially when you want to get ideal stats for your gear, like double+ Crits. So, what are the best ways to get Forgotten Souls this season? We got these tips from the D4 experts in our team and pro players from the D4 community to help you stop grinding!

How To Farm Forgotten Souls Fast in Diablo 4 Season 8?

Farming Forgotten Souls became an issue for many players in D4 S8. It's not the rarest, but getting enough to meet your needs is not easy. While players are sitting on billions of gold, thousands of Obducite, and dozens of Tempering materials, many are stuck with fewer than 100 Forgotten Souls, as the mats are running out fast when using them for gear upgrading. It’s become such a bottleneck that some players have stopped farming new gear entirely, knowing they can't upgrade it. If you’re also running dry, here are the best ways to farm Forgotten Souls efficiently this season.

1. Helltides (Chests, Events, Salvage)

In D4 Season 8, Helltides remain one of the most effective ways to gather Forgotten Souls. You can consistently run Helltides and open as many chests as possible, which adds up over time. While it might not feel like much during a single run, you will often find yourself with well over a thousand Forgotten Souls before you realize it.

Except chests, Forgotten Souls can drop from event rewards and other interactive items during Helltides. The Forgotten Souls also come from salvaging legendary items found during these runs, making Helltide farming a two-in-one strategy. Even if you aren’t specifically targeting Souls, the consistent flow of drops makes it easy to build them up passively.

2. Boss Lair Chests and Seasonal Rep Caches

In S8, running seasonal bosses, particularly Belial on Torment 4, has become one of the most efficient routes for farming Forgotten Souls. Each run gives you a hoard drop containing around 7–9 Souls, and every 6 runs rewards you with a seasonal cache containing another 35–40 Souls. This adds up quickly over time, and players have reported farming thousands this way.

The real benefit comes from the reputation rewards tied to these bosses. Once you’ve progressed through the season questline and have access to the rep vendor, you can trade in excess reputation for caches that contain large quantities of Souls. It’s one of the few methods that provides a consistent, large return for your effort, about 10,000 Souls in 6–8 hours of boss runs, if you’re focused and efficient.

3. Tree of Whispers (Material Caches)

The Tree of Whispers is another good farming spot for Forgotten Souls, especially through the Greater Material Caches you can earn by turning in whispers. However, the results can be inconsistent. Some players report opening a Greater Material Cache and receiving just over 100 Souls total, while others have gotten much less. It’s a valid method, but not one you can rely on exclusively.

There’s also some confusion about which caches provide Forgotten Souls. For example, players have tried buying masterworking caches at the Den (as listed in the tooltip), only to receive Obols and Obducite instead. This has led to frustration, especially when there’s no clear indicator that Souls are included in the reward.

4. Nightmare Dungeons (Legendary Salvage)

While Nightmare Dungeons don’t drop Forgotten Souls directly, they are excellent for farming legendary items, which can then be salvaged for Souls. Compared to Infernal Hordes, Nightmare Dungeons are quicker to complete, many can be done in about a minute, and yield a similar number of salvageable items. If your goal is to collect Souls through salvage, then Nightmare Dungeons are likely the better choice.

Players have also pointed out that Nightmare Dungeons help collect Obducite and Distilled Fear, giving them additional value beyond Forgotten Souls. If you’re already running dungeons to level glyphs or earn XP, this method lets you multitask while still building up your soul count.

5. Infernal Hordes

In S8, Infernal Hordes are still listed as a resource of Forgotten Souls in-game, but their drop rate is much lower than other methods. We tried farming Hordes non-stop and got about 500 Souls per hour, which isn't nothing, but compared to other methods, it's not very efficient. Hordes are better for Obducite and boss summoning materials, and seem to fall short when it comes to Souls.

Also, several players noted that even after hours of Horde grinding, they still couldn’t gather enough to finish masterworking for a single build. Despite living in all the best-recommended zones and farming heavily, the pace of Forgotten Soul acquisition just isn't keeping up with demand.

6. Legion Events and Dark Citadel

While not the most efficient, world events like Legion and Dark Citadel can also drop Forgotten Souls. These are best treated as supplementary sources. If you’re in the area or completing seasonal objectives, they're worth doing, especially since they can drop legendary items for salvage.

However, the Souls from these events are inconsistent and usually low in number. They’re good to include in your loop if you’re nearby, but not something to prioritize if you’re actively trying to farm souls.

7. Bartering (Reputation Caches)

Once you’ve completed the seasonal storyline and built up your reputation, you can trade it in for caches that contain Forgotten Souls. This system isn’t always clear, and some players have been confused about how or where to redeem their rep. The billboard back in the main hub allows you to exchange excess rep for these caches, which can be a helpful boost once you’re going into the seasonal content.
