Season of the Slaughter starts on March 10, 2026, and if you want to hit level 60 as fast as possible, you need the right build and the right leveling route for your class. Our Diablo 4 Season 12 leveling guide compiles all the most important information, the best leveling strategies, and the top leveling builds for every class in the new season. According to estimations, it should take about 3 hours to level your character to max level with an efficient method, depending on your class and what kind of gear you find along the way. There are multiple ways of reaching max level in the game, and you should always choose the one that you enjoy the most, but if speed is your goal, this guide has everything you need.
Diablo 4 Season 12 Fast Leveling Guide
In Season 12, the rules have changed a bit compared to previous seasons. The season serves as a testing ground for some mechanics of the upcoming April 28th global update, and for this reason, there will not be any radical changes in it, and if there are no radical changes, then there will be no radical changes to builds either, which means that overall, aside from a small pool of new unique items in Diablo 4 Season 12, builds can be predicted quite easily. The new seasonal mechanic revolves around bloodied items and killstreaks, and players can transform into the Butcher after earning enough reputation through the seasonal quest line. Sanctification has been removed, which shifts the power balance for several classes, and the introduction of Torment 5 difficulty through bloodied layer keys adds a much higher ceiling for endgame content. Paladin remains the strongest class even after notable nerfs, while Barbarian has moved up to a solid second position, and Spiritborn continues to offer some of the fastest builds in the game. With all of that in mind, picking a top leveling build and following an efficient route from 1 to 60 matters more than ever this season.
Diablo 4 Season 12 Fast 1-60 Leveling Route for Each Class
Below is a detailed step-by-step leveling route organized by level ranges. This applies to all classes, the builds differ, but the path through the game is largely the same.
Step 1: Character Creation and First Actions (Level 1)
Start by creating a seasonal character. It is very important to create a seasonal character and not an Eternal one. If you have chosen to run one of the best leveling builds, you have the luxury of selecting Hard difficulty to begin with, but for most players, Normal difficulty is the safer pick. Experience is about the speed of clearing areas, nothing else — either you set the difficulty higher than Normal and watch others level their characters while you stroke your ego, or you play on Normal until about level 45. If you are a complete new player or you have not played in a year or so, Normal is definitely the recommendation.
Your first action after loading into the game is to get a pet from your inventory tab, so someone can collect resources and gold for you. The simplest pet is available by default for all players, and this pet will save a lot of time when leveling up. Next, if you have the Vessel of Hatred expansion, head to the Mercenary Den in Nahantu and hire your mercenaries. Select Subo as your primary mercenary, he will reveal enemies and various points of interest on the map so you will not have to run around trying to find them, which speeds up leveling considerably. For your reinforcement slot, take Varyana to increase attack speed, or Raheir, who helps deal with crowd control effects and summons a Bastion bubble that mitigates 90% of damage taken against stronger enemies. The recommended mercenaries with their skills are usually indicated in whatever build planner you are using for leveling.
Step 2: Seasonal Quest Line and the Butcher (Levels 1-10)
Start the season quest line immediately. This season is going to be very special because you can transform into the Butcher if you earn enough reputation. The first seasonal quest starts in Gakul, and you will be eerily transformed into the Butcher during this quest line. You undertake the quest "A Taste of Power" and uncover the dark path to becoming the Butcher. As the Butcher, you wield brutal powers that inspire terror, turning them upon your enemies, and you cleave through monsters right from level 1. From the early gameplay footage, killing just one monster already gives a bunch of experience, and there are several things tied in the season journey to killing enemies as the Butcher.
Progress the seasonal quests until you get access to the seasonal reputation board. All quests marked with a leaf icon are priority number one, and alongside them, the chapters of the Seasonal Journey. The sooner you start progressing along the seasonal chain, the better. Do not worry about completing everything at this stage, just do the first few quests until you have the seasonal reputation board, and then it is time to move on.
Step 3: Helltides, Elixirs, and Early Progression (Levels 10-30)
After completing the initial seasonal quests, shift your focus to Helltides. If you want to level up quickly, Helltide is your path — this is a universal leveling method in general until level 60. The main goal in Helltide is to collect cinders and open chests, because the chests give a ton of XP and a ton of items. You always want to go into the Helltide path that also has Whispers, so you are double dipping with the rewards. If you keep the kill streak bonuses that are part of this season, that also gives you more reputation and speeds up your seasonal progression.
At level 10, some elixirs become available at the alchemist. Always have an active elixir buff on you at all times while leveling since it will increase your experience gain by 5%, and higher-level elixirs later give up to 8%. At the start of the game, gather some herbs to have enough crafting materials for elixirs. Also at level 10, tempering becomes available at the blacksmith — this is a very cheap upgrade for your character because you will gain a lot of power for very low cost. Try to put movement speed tempers on your amulet and boots and some damage affixes on your weapons. This will help you kill monsters faster and get more experience per hour.
Do not pay any attention to white and blue items during this phase. These items become obsolete every 5 minutes of gameplay. After about level 15, yellow items start dropping, and they become obsolete in 10 minutes of gameplay. Do not roll blue and yellow items at the Blacksmith or Occultist — although the option exists, there is no point. Around level 30 and beyond, legendary items start dropping, but do not think you finally have endgame gear — they also become obsolete very quickly. End-game legendaries are item power 800 with one or more stars.
Play in a group whenever possible. In the Helltide, there are other people automatically since Diablo 4 is an open world game, and you benefit from that a lot. It is always better, always faster, and also more fun slaying demons together with friends or strangers you meet online. For your first hour of Helltide, experienced players can typically reach level 30 to 40 or even 45 if they are really fast, but even reaching level 20 is fine, it will just take a little longer.
Step 4: Strongholds, Class Quests, and Mid-Level Progression (Levels 30-45)
Once you hit level 15 on most classes, your class quest will complete automatically if you have ever done it on your account before. If you have never done it, complete it on the Eternal realm as preparation before the season, and it will auto-complete in the seasonal realm once you hit the eligible level. Class specialization opens at level 15, either automatically or through a quest, and the menu is opened with the S key.
During the 5-minute Helltide downtime, you can salvage your gear, run quick dungeons for the aspects your build needs, and handle other maintenance. Get basic aspects from the dungeons indicated in your build guide — go to the Codex of Power, find the aspect via search, and left-click to plot a path to the dungeon. After obtaining the aspect at the Occultist, you can imprint it not only on a legendary but also on a rare item. The item will become legendary, but the number and size of stats will remain the same as they were on the yellow one.
Do strongholds when you have leveled up a bit, but before level 60, because after that, the experience from them will be negligible. The experience for strongholds is the same at all difficulty levels, so do them on Normal. You need to clear almost all of them because Legion events appear on their territories, and some dungeons with aspects and world bosses are also located in stronghold territories. Around level 40 is a good time to clear them all.
Do not miss Legion Events. There is a bonfire that increases your experience by up to 15% for 15 minutes, there is a crowd of people so you do not need to be well-geared, and there is decent loot for the start of the game. Do not miss World Bosses either, the reward is quite decent and varied, and the bosses themselves are not dangerous. If the Legion and World Boss times coincide, go to the boss without thinking.
At around level 40, you gain access to mercenary barter in the Mercenary Den, where you can exchange mercenary points for items, chests with materials, or aspects. These rewards quickly lose value as you level and become almost useless after Torment 1, so use them right away and do not hoard them. The same principle applies to rewards from the Seasonal Journey and seasonal reputation, they all quickly lose their value as you progress.
Step 5: First Capstone Dungeon and Pushing to Level 60 (Levels 45-60)
After your first Helltide session, complete the first capstone dungeon during the downtime. The first one, the Turret Mane, is located in Havaza in the middle area. It is really fast if you do it in a group, and the capstone dungeon will give you additional skill points and open up further progression.
If you are playing Paladin or Spiritborn, you can probably bump up the difficulty to Penitent or Expert around this point. For most other players, stay on Hard. Starting from level 45, you can switch from Normal to Hard, because as a general rule, you should not be fighting mobs — you should be killing them. If you are dying in the Helltide, you are on too high a difficulty. When you die, you lose all your cinders collected to open the chests, and that is a huge setback.
At level 45, incenses become available and give you an additional 5% experience bonus. Incenses stack with elixirs, so you should have both active at the same time. However, incenses do not stack with each other in terms of their experience bonus, so only one is needed. All magical elixirs are available around level 55, and all 3 types of essences closer to level 60. Wells in Nightmare Dungeons also give a notable experience bonus for 1 hour, to guarantee finding a well, the sigil needs to have the "Forgotten Wisdom" affix. In total, you can have 8% from an elixir, plus 5% from incense, plus 15% from the well, totaling a 28% experience boost.
Continue grinding Helltides all the way to 60. You get the Butcher reputation, it is a ton of fun, and you keep your kill streaks in the Helltide. The Kurast Undercity with tributes of growth is another good option, tributes start dropping around level 20-25 and give extra experience at the end. Do not hoard them, as they will devalue over time. Infernal Horde with 4 waves and starter Compasses also works well. Do not fixate on just one activity though, the main goal is to have fun and not get stuck in one place.
Do not forget your second capstone dungeon around level 50. You need to complete the Hellish Descent, which is located in Scosglen. It will give you even more skill points and open up Torment 1 difficulty.
Step 6: Hitting Level 60 and Transitioning to the Endgame
At level 60, all improved elixirs and all 3 types of essences are available. From then on, you can and should ensure that all 4 buffs from them are always active. Change the difficulty to Torment 1 once you hit level 60. Imprint your gear with the aspects you need, do your first tempers, and gamble on a weapon or armor piece that you do not yet have at a higher item power. Save your gambling currency until level 60 for the best results.
If you are a Paladin, there is a nice trick: complete the Path of the Paladin quest line to get a guaranteed Magnum Opus, a powerful one-hand weapon that is played in almost every Paladin build. You can get the Griswald sword for free and it is going to be very powerful for your endgame transition.
After reaching Torment 1, choose the world difficulty by doing the Pit. The Pit tier that you can clear solo in 2 minutes is your target difficulty for farming. Do not move to the next world tier if the corresponding Pit tier takes you 4 or more minutes to clear. Start looking up an endgame build, begin tempering and masterworking your gear, and start hunting for the unique items that your build requires.
Do not hoard keys for uber bosses. Start using them as soon as you get them, because you need unique items to grow stronger. All key uniques for any build in the game are obtained from uber bosses, and if you are saving keys for the next difficulty, you are depriving yourself of the opportunity to become stronger here and now.
For paragon leveling after 60, the infernal hordes with bloodied sigils were extremely strong on the PTR. Killing the Butchers in the hordes gave an insane amount of experience points — literally insane for paragon leveling. If you do a couple of infernal hordes once you have some gear, it is going to be very good on any S-tier build. For your seasonal blessings, go for the Urn of Butchery early and then the Urn of Meat as your next priority. It usually takes about 100 hours to reach Paragon 300, but this season is expected to be way faster thanks to buffed Pit XP and the juiced kill streaks.
Diablo 4 Season 12 Best Leveling Builds for Each Class
The first step in any season is to pick a top leveling build for your class. Below are the S-Tier leveling builds for each class, the strongest, fastest, and most reliable options for the 1-60 journey in Season 12.
Best Paladin Leveling Build - Blessed Hammer Paladin
The Paladin remains an absolute powerhouse in Season 12, and the Hammered Arbiter leveling build combines the best bits of the class all into one package. You summon hammers which orbit your character, and then you run across the battlefield at lightning speed, destroying everything in your path. Not only do you have your hammers, but you also become an angel from the high heavens, dealing tons of damage and moving across the battlefield at incredible velocity.
The best thing about this build is that it requires no uniques and no RNG aspects — the class itself is just so strong. Your main skill is Blessed Hammer, which thanks to Disciples Halo, orbits around you, dealing damage constantly to enemies that get hit by it. You can cast multiple hammers at once which will all orbit outwards and then you can carry on running, which is what gives this skill its incredible power and agility. Falling Star serves as your mobility tool to quickly teleport and dive around the map, and more importantly, it triggers your Disciple Oath. Oaths are Paladin-specific skills you activate at level 15, and the Disciple Oath states that casting a Disciple skill with a cooldown lets you become Arbiter for 4.5 seconds.
Arbiter form is insane. It has more movement speed, it juices up your Blessed Hammers as they become a Disciple skill, and it damages enemies with wing strikes that are incredibly powerful. Once you get your Arbiter of Justice ability, for a whopping 30 whole seconds you can become Arbiter and carry destruction across entire zones. Serif Wings pushes your movement speed to extreme levels, and your wing strikes deal way more damage on top. Rally boosts movement speed even further and gives you faith generation, which is the main resource within the build.
Your key passive, Exaltation, doubles your damage output in Arbiter form and improves wing strikes even more. Wing strikes do a ton of damage, and this passive is what ties the whole build together. For gear, use a one-handed weapon and a shield — shields now provide 100% more damage when worn with a one-handed weapon, so there is absolutely no loss in DPS compared to a two-handed weapon, and you also get block chance, which is great defensively.
There are absolutely no required aspects from RNG for this build. If you struggle with faith resource generation early on, grab the Aspect of Voracious Rage from the Hallowed Ossuary dungeon in Fractured Peaks. For defense, Aspect of Disobedience gives you more armor. An RNG aspect worth watching for is Aspect of Tyial's Jurisdiction, it will give Arbiter wing strikes insane damage. It is absolutely not necessary for leveling, but it boosts your power enormously. For mercenaries, hire Subo for more crit strike damage and Raheir for the Bastion bubble that mitigates 90% of damage taken.
In the endgame, the Paladin has been nerfed quite a bit from Season 11, most notably the Castle legendary Paragon node, which brought down damage output by a factor of roughly 6 to 7 times. Even so, Paladin remains the strongest class with the largest variety of really good builds. Blessed Shield with Shield of Retribution is now the strongest pushing build by a wide margin thanks to thorn scaling bug fixes, but Blessed Hammer is still the best build overall, as it can push very high tiers while being head and shoulders the fastest speed farmer.
Best Spiritborn Leveling Build - Evade Spiritborn
Evade Spiritborn is one of the fastest builds in the entire season and offers one of the fastest ways to level your character from zero to hero. You use the Eagle main hall, and whenever you evade, it spawns feathers that deal massive damage — this mechanic is extremely overpowered and very fast as always. The build will enjoy a new injection of power in Season 12 due to the bloodied affixes, and it is the only build that really rivals the Paladin in terms of raw leveling speed.
Spiritborn is looking as strong as ever in Season 12 with multiple builds that will smash all the content with ease. You can transition into the Payback Spiritborn later, which is also an S-tier build, or into other builds using the Staff the Rod of Caleka — the esteemed unique that forms the core of the top Spiritborn setups and is more than capable of destroying all endgame content. Thorn's Payback and Rake are looking to be two of the strongest endgame builds, with Rake being better at general content and Thorn's Payback being better at pushing the highest content. Crushing Hand will be top tier for general content farming, while Quill Volley and Touch of Death follow closely behind.
The Paladin this season has a slight edge overall because it has a much higher endgame scaling and ceiling, especially with the new Torment 5 difficulty where you need to kill layer bosses using bloodied keys. The Evade build is going to clear T5 content, but it will not be as easy as what you can do on the Paladin. That said, all of the top Spiritborn builds will easily clear Pit 100 plus at Paragon 200 and above with decent equipment, so the class is as healthy as always with a full range of endgame options.
Best Necro Leveling Build - Minion Necromancer
For Necromancer, leveling with minions is always the recommendation because it is just very chill. You have your minions do the work for you, and the play style is relaxed and straightforward during the entire 1-60 journey. In the endgame, you can transition into the Golem Necromancer, which is also an S-tier build and has received huge buffs this season.
The Necromancer class got a pretty hefty buff this patch with a bug fix to one of Golem's most powerful aspects, Fel Gluttony. Starting in Season 12, its proc damage now works with chance to attack twice tempers for your golem, nearly doubling the damage that it does. Because the goal of the build is to spam out your Blood Golem's active ability with things like Golem active cooldown reduction tempers and Abhorrent Decrepify, you naturally end up proccing Fel Gluttony as well, and that represents a pretty large portion of your overall damage. These bug fixes are huge, and this fix alongside Grave Bloom, a unique weapon that allows you to summon out four mini golems, has single-handedly propelled the Golem build to become the best Necromancer build in the entire game.
As far as bloodied affixes go, the 3% core stat affix is best in slot, just like it is for every single build in the game, but the Golem build also benefits from the cooldown reduction per killstreaks, which helps bring down the cooldown of your Golem active even more. The Necromancer has also been one of the slower classes historically, so things like movement speed per kill streak from bloodied affixes are a huge help to keep up with other classes. Overall, Necromancer is actually in a really good spot this season, and having another strong minion build on top gives the class more depth than before.
Best Sorc Leveling Build - Firewall Hydra Sorcerer
On the Sorcerer, Hydra is the least demanding and fastest build for starting the leveling process on this class. You lay down big hydras and just run around while they deal strong AoE damage — it is super chill and easy to play. Thanks to the Amulet of Iris, your hydras turn into three large hydras, and they are going to deal massive area damage. Hydra is as strong as Crackling Energy for leveling, though it does not quite reach the same level in the endgame unfortunately.
The starter build and the late-game build can be different, and they almost always are. When leveling from zero to Torment 1, you need the most convenient build, and playing on a starter build until T1 is only a few hours of gameplay. From Torment 1 onward, you need the most effective build, and switching to another build after reaching T1 is no harder than developing your current starter build on any class.
In the endgame, you want to transition into the Crackling Energy Sorcerer, which is the absolute top Sorcerer build in Season 12. Crackling Energy uses Bull Lightning together with Wizard's Bull Lightning to generate crackling energy, Convulsion from the skill tree picks it up automatically, and Overflowing Cameo turns all that crackling energy into massive damage. Lightning builds are also the fastest Sorcerer option thanks to the cooldown reduction from the key passive Overflowing Energy, which lets you refresh teleport much quicker than any other element, and you can kind of mimic that permanent teleport that the class had a few seasons ago.
Sorcerer did not receive many changes going from Season 11 to Season 12, and the class situation is somewhat one-dimensional. Crackling Energy is the best build by a large margin for any content from leveling to pushing, and it is the only build the Sorcerer has at the top of the tier list. Hydra and Blizzard are decent alternatives, but they fall behind considerably, and frost builds are not really meta this season. If you want to try a fire build, Hydra is the recommendation — Meteor is also not too bad but it is very clunky to play.
Best Rogue Leveling Build - Dance of Knives Rogue
Dance of Knives is the go-to leveling build for Rogue, spin to win, super good, super cool, very strong. The Rogue has the most convenient starting build out of any class with Dance of Knives, and there is no question about it. In the endgame, you can transition into a Death Trap build or into a Heartseeker build, both of which are S-tier options for different types of content.
For Rogue, Season 12 is rather light on changes, and there are only very minor buffs to the paragon which barely move the needle in raising Rogue's overall power level. For Rogue to be a truly all-encompassing top class, a lot more needs to be buffed up. The class still sits in the bottom half of the rankings, bar a few outliers like Death Trap for speed farming and Heartseeker for pushing. The unique Rustbit and Durk will be a good choice if you want to do a lot of bossing, and the bloodied affixes offer some interesting options though they seem rather underwhelming for endgame Rogue builds, with the only truly interesting one being the cooldown increase.
Death Trap is still the overall best Rogue build for any endgame content. With Death Trap you can blitz through all endgame activities and even the new Torment 5 sigils at unmatched efficiency, beating out even the best speed farming builds from other classes in most cases. For pushing exclusively, Heartseeker Rogue with Orphan Maker is a top choice, utilizing strong synergy to enable a reload-based play style, though it may not appeal to everyone and can feel slow and clunky. It requires perfect timed inputs and is almost impossible to play without an assisting tool. If you prefer a more relaxed play style, Dance of Knives with Poison Trap is the endgame path to take — it is still easy to gear as it does not require any mythic gimmicks, and it provides a smooth experience without fussy mechanics.
Best Barb Leveling Build - Hammer of the Ancients (HotA) Barbarian
Barbarian and Druid have historically always been a bit slower for leveling, but Hammer of the Ancients is a solid choice that carries very well into the endgame. You can also play Lunging Strike combined with it, the combination of HotA plus Lunging Strike is pretty solid, it works very well, and it is also a very good endgame build. This pairing gives the Barbarian strong single-target burst combined with good mobility, and it holds up throughout the entire leveling process.
For Barbarian in Season 12, there is a very slight shift in the class but all favorite builds from Season 11 will remain pretty much the same. With the loss of Sanctification and the double Melted Heart of Selig setup, Hammer of the Ancients will be moving to the number two slot when it comes to Pit pushing, and Lunging Strike will be taking the top pushing crown. Despite Sanctification dropping out and getting replaced by bloodied items that are notably weaker, Barbarians are still very high up in the tier lists because they have enough scaling and also received some nice buffs to their paragon boards.
For speed farming at endgame, you can never go wrong with a max movement speed spin-to-win Earthquake build. You can have up to 10 earthquakes out at one time, Whirlwind gives extra damage modifiers to help increase the damage of your earthquakes, and it also leaves you unhindered, which allows you to freely move through monsters. You simply run through a pack, drop some massive earthquakes, watch the power of the Tec rune at work, and then collect your loot. Barbarian is looking like the second-strongest class this season behind Paladin, with a bunch of really good builds across the board.
Best Druild Leveling Build - Companion Druid
For Druid leveling from 1 to 60, Companions are the recommended path. The play style is straightforward and your animal companions handle a large share of the damage output during the leveling phase, letting you focus on movement and positioning. In the end, you want to transition into Pulverize ideally, which is the build that can handle high-tier Pits and do enough damage with a moderate amount of gear for endgame activities.
For Druid, there have not been any changes of importance besides the removal of Sanctification. Due to this, Pulverize is really the only build that can push high-tier content and deal enough damage at the top end. Later on, you can definitely build the Cataclysm setup for faster farming, as the build is simply superior in terms of speed and AoE compared to Pulverize. If you want to play something different, you can play Wolves, but Wolves are lacking in AoE, and because of that, the build is not great at farming things like Helltide or Infernal Hordes.
Druid has a more limited build selection compared to Paladin, Barbarian, or Spiritborn this season, but the Companion leveling route into a Pulverize endgame provides a functional and enjoyable path through all of Season 12's content. Cataclysm is a formidable speed farmer that hits the entire screen as you walk, and even if it is not the most powerful build, it earns high marks in the speed farming tier list for its insane AoE and mobility. Between Companions for leveling, Pulverize for pushing, and Cataclysm for farming, the Druid covers all bases well enough to compete — just do not expect the same depth of options that other classes enjoy.
