Trial of Chaos has always split the Path of Exile 2 community, but patch 0.5.5 gives the mechanic its biggest rework since launch. With the Forbidden Rites Event now live, players are heading back into the Sanctum of Chaos to test out 30-room runs, redesigned bosses, and a much cleaner reward structure. This guide covers everything you need to farm Trial of Chaos efficiently in 0.5.5, from the patch changes and modifier picks to a full farming rotation that turns fragments into consistent divines.
PoE 2 0.5.5 Trial of Chaos Farm Guide (Best Mods, Drops & Run Strategy)
Trial of Chaos in Path of Exile 2 0.5.5 has moved from one of the most tedious pieces of endgame content to one of the smoother currency farms available. You enter through the Sanctum of Chaos in Act 3 (Keth Marshes) using Inscribed Ultimatums, pick one of three negative modifiers before each round, and push as far as your build can carry you. Rewards now consist exclusively of Currency and Soul Cores, with the Trialmaster still dropping build-defining Uniques like The Adorned at the end of a full run.
Since the mechanic was rebuilt from the ground up for Forbidden Rites, the first thing worth covering is what actually changed compared to the Runes of Aldur version.
Changes to Trial of Chaos in PoE 2 0.5.5 Update & Forbidden Rites League
The 0.5.5 patch touched almost every part of Trial of Chaos except the balance numbers. GGG confirmed no balance changes are coming until 1.0, so build viability stays identical to Runes of Aldur.
Structural Overhauls
30 rooms instead of 10. You can now push a single run up to Room 30, subsequently fighting all three bosses and ending at the Trialmaster in one sitting. Completing 30 rooms grants all three Fates automatically.
Leave and return between rooms. You are no longer locked in for the full run. Step out, deal with real life, then jump back in exactly where you left off.
Larger elevators and less distance between rooms. The dead time between encounters got cut down heavily.
Trialmaster only freezes time once. No more forced pauses every room to hear him talk.
Encounter Changes
Survive encounters improved. Per Game Designer ZaccieA, killing all monsters spawns the next wave much faster, and killing Rare Monsters shaves time off the countdown. The room now functions closer to its Trial of Sekhemas equivalent.
Escort and Soul Core retrieval rooms reduced. These objective-based rooms appear less frequently.
Boss fights redesigned with less flying. The tornado bird boss and other flying encounters were reworked so they no longer run away from you constantly.
Bonus chests per room. Every room now offers additional loot beyond the main reward.
Modifier & Reward Changes
Full pass on all modifiers. Baseline danger has been reduced in lower tiers.
All modifiers grant extra item Rarity. Every debuff you take now increases your reward quality.
Over 10 new Wager modifiers were added, giving more options to juice runs.
More tiers per modifier. Instead of capping at Rank 3, some go to Rank 5 or 7 with weaker baselines.
Rewards are now exclusively Currency and Soul Cores. No more filler drops clogging your window.
Soul Cores got buffed and new ones were added.
With those changes covered, the next question is if the mechanic is actually worth your time in Forbidden Rites.
Should You Run Trial of Chaos in PoE 2 0.5.5?
Trial of Chaos sits in a specific spot in the farming pyramid. It won't outperform juiced mapping strategies for divines per hour, but it offers something most other farms don't: zero setup, zero entry cost, and realized gains at the end of every run.
Pros of Farming Trial of Chaos
No setup or entry cost. Inscribed Ultimatums drop from any monster in Act 3 onward and go for around 20 Exalts on trade. You likely already have a stack sitting in your stash.
Consistent returns. Trial Fragments have historically traded for 8-10 divines each. Four to five runs per hour puts you at 32-45 divines per hour with zero investment.
Inventory stays clean. No junk drops to sort through, so you jump straight into the next run.
Realized gains. You sell fragments directly. No waiting for trade requests, no market monitoring.
Adorned Diamond chase. The Trialmaster has roughly a 1-in-50 chance to drop The Adorned, along with Glimpse of Chaos, Zerphi's Genesis, Mahuxotl's Machination, and Hateforge.
Soul Core value. Some Soul Cores like the Soul Core of Askhapa (15 spirit) trade for 2-3 divines each.
Cons of Farming Trial of Chaos
It can get repetitive. Making it your main farm for weeks at a time is rough unless you enjoy the pattern.
Bad modifier combinations can brick runs. Certain overlapping mods add serious risk if you aren't paying attention.
Limited loot influence. Rarity doesn't help much since Rare Monster density is low.
Terrible experience and gold gains. Level 98 players report around 3% XP over 100 runs.
Fragment prices drop early league. In the first weeks, before crafters ramp up demand for Adorned, fragments trade lower than the mid-league 8-10 div range.
Who Trial of Chaos Suits
This farm works for players who struggle to survive in juiced maps, who don't want to invest in tablets, or who need a consistent income stream between mapping sessions. If you're 50 divines short of your next upgrade, an hour of Trial of Chaos locks that in cleanly. Casual players with limited weeknight time can pull 300-350 divines per week off 10 hours of runs. Gigablasters and crafters running juiced strategies will see better div-per-hour elsewhere.
With the value case sorted, here's how to actually run the trial.
How To Run Trial of Chaos
The entry process is straightforward, but the round structure and progression rules matter for reward efficiency.
Getting In
Location: Sanctum of Chaos in Act 3, Keth Marshes. Activate the waypoint inside for fast return access from any town or hideout.
Entry item: Inscribed Ultimatum, drops from monsters starting in Act 3. Killing Zicoatl, Chimeral Warden guarantees a Chiselled Stone for your first Ascendancy run.
Area level determines rounds:
Level 39-59: 4 Rounds
Level 60-74: 7 Rounds
Level 75+: 10 Rounds (now extendable up to 30 in 0.5.5)
Round Structure
Rounds follow a set order in 10-round increments:
Round 1: Defeat all Monsters
Round 2: Survive until the Timer Expires
Round 3: Escort the Statue or Collect Soul Cores
Round 4: Boss Fight (guarantees a Soul Core)
Round 5: Defeat all Monsters or Survive
Round 6: Sacrifice Monsters to the Altar or Collect Soul Cores
Round 7: Boss Fight
Round 8: Defeat all Monsters or Survive
Round 9: Sacrifice Monsters or Escort the Statue
Round 10: Boss Fight (drops a Fate)
Rounds 4, 7, and 10 always contain one of three bosses (Uxmal, Bahlak, Chetza) and drop Cowardly Fate, Deadly Fate, or Victorious Fate. All three Fates are required to challenge the Trialmaster. With the 30-room extension, you get all three Fates automatically after finishing a full run.
Modifier Selection Rules
Before every round, choose one of three negative modifiers that persist for the rest of the run. If all three options look terrible and you already have decent loot, exit the trial and keep your rewards. Failing any round wipes everything you collected.
Progression Tips
Skip the first elevator circle. A small circle rides the lift up first. Boarding after it triggers a much faster ride to the next floor.
Stand on the elevator pad during Survive rooms. Blood Globules, Heart Tethers, Stormcaller Runes, Impending Doom, and turrets can't spawn on you there.
Step in and out of the sacrifice circle. In the Blood Sacrifice room, this spawns the next monster wave faster.
Sprint everywhere. Time is the currency here. Five runs per hour is the ceiling most players aim for.
Before locking in modifier choices, it helps to know exactly what you're chasing in the reward window.
Trial of Chaos Drops & Rewards
Trial of Chaos rewards fall into five categories. Knowing what drops where lets you plan when to stop a run versus when to push deeper.
Trial Fragments (Fates)
The primary income source. Three types drop from the 10th-round bosses:
Cowardly Fate - drops from Uxmal, The Beastlord
Deadly Fate - drops from Bahlak, The Sky Seer
Victorious Fate - drops from Chetza, The Feathered Plague
All three Fates are required to open the Trialmaster's Tower. Mid-league prices sit around 8-10 divines each, though early league they trade for 2-3 divines while player demand ramps up. In a 30-room run, all three Fates drop automatically from the three boss rounds.
Soul Cores
Soul Cores drop from reward chests after each boss round (Rooms 4, 7, and 10) and from the general reward pool. They socket into items instead of Runes and provide powerful modifiers. Values range from around 10 Exalts on the low end to 5 Divine Orbs (~3,000ex) for top-tier cores.
Notable Soul Cores:
Soul Core of Askhapa - grants 15 Spirit, trades around 2-3 divines
Higher-tier cores stack modifiers that can define entire builds (elemental penetration, attribute bonuses, resistance blocks)
Soul Cores got buffed in 0.5.5 and new ones were added to the drop pool, so mid-league prices for the best ones climb steadily as crafters chase perfect items.
Trialmaster Uniques
Defeating the Trialmaster grants your 4th Ascendancy points on first kill. After that, he has a chance to drop one of five Unique items:
The Adorned - the top chase item. Roughly a 1-in-50 drop rate. Amplifies socketed jewels heavily, defining the jewel meta.
Glimpse of Chaos - unique helmet with random Vaal implicits
Zerphi's Genesis - unique flask with life-recovery scaling
Mahuxotl's Machination - unique shield with block-focused defenses
Hateforge - unique gloves that repeat curses
Currency Drops
The reworked reward structure now consists exclusively of Currency and Soul Cores from reward chests. Boss rounds reliably drop stacks of Chaos Orbs (11 chaos per divine adds up over runs), and the between-floor window occasionally rolls Divine Orb stacks of 2-3, Exalted Orbs, Regal Orbs, and rare drops like Annulment Orbs or Divining Orbs. Mirror drops have been reported but sit at extremely rare rates.
Corrupted Inscribed Ultimatums
The Trialmaster has a chance to drop special corrupted Inscribed Ultimatums with random sacrifice modifiers. For example, sacrificing 10 Vaal Orbs on a successful run rewards 20 Vaal Orbs back. These come with additional modifiers like "Monsters Deal 100% Damage As Extra Fire" for extra challenge and profit.
Rewards Between Floors
Between rooms, a small window appears with occasional ground loot. Reports from 100-run samples suggest 99% of this loot is filler, but the remaining 1% includes stacks of Divines, Annulment Orbs, and Divining Orbs. Bonus chests per room in 0.5.5 have made this window more valuable than the previous version.
Ascendancy Points
Completing the Trial once grants Ascendancy points during the campaign leveling process. Defeating the Trialmaster grants the 4th Ascendancy points required for max character progression.
With drops covered, the next decision point is which modifiers to click to protect those rewards.
Trial of Chaos Best Modifier Tier List (Mod Cheat Sheet)
Modifier picks depend heavily on build. What follows is a subjective ranking pulled together from the POE2Tools tier list and community farming experience. The general rule: avoid 1-star modifiers regardless of build, and higher-star picks are safer.
Always Take (Free Modifiers)
Lethal Rare Monsters. More Rare Monsters means more loot. This is a positive modifier disguised as a debuff.
Blood Globules. Effortless to dodge. Meet the globule halfway, wait for the drop animation, then keep moving.
Drought. If you don't rely on flasks (most non-concoction builds), this is free. Every four floors, the boss well refills your flasks anyway.
Entangling Monsters. Minor movement slow. Barely a debuff for ranged builds.
Lessened Reach. Not dangerous. Only annoying if your build depends on AoE or projectile speed.
Shocking Turrets. Free at 75% Lightning Resistance. Click this to prevent Petrification Statues from spawning.
Unstoppable Monsters. Free unless you run a stun-focused build.
Monster Speed. Actually speeds up your kill rooms since monsters run to you faster. Watch out for boss kick attacks (the wind bird's kick becomes unrollable).
Vaal Omnitect. Extremely easy to dodge outside of boss fights.
Shielding Monsters. Just gives monsters extra effective HP. Trivial.
Build-Dependent Picks
Chaotic Monsters. Free for CI builds (Chaos Inoculation immunity) or anyone with 75% Chaos Resistance. Everyone else should avoid.
Toxic Monsters. Free for CI builds. Otherwise stack Antidote Charm and Staunching Charm.
Resistant Monsters. Free for physical builds. Actually a buff for Rakiyata's Flow users since inverted resistances turn +40% into +40% damage. Bad for elemental builds without penetration.
Deadly Monsters. Free if you run Brass Dome (no extra crit damage), Ward, or Gemling. Dangerous for glass cannons.
Damaged Defences. Free for Ward builds since Ward doesn't count as a defense. Devastating for CI/ES builds at Rank 2.
Burning Turrets. Manageable at 75% Fire Res, but ignite on Energy Shield is rough. Prefer Shocking Turrets for CI builds.
Time Paradox. Free if you don't run Petrification Statues or rely on buffs. Never take alongside Petrification since it doubles petrify duration.
Enraged Bosses. Free if you kill bosses in seconds. Otherwise skip.
Manageable But Annoying (Tier 1 Only)
Stormcaller Runes. Free at Tier 1-2. Red circles on the ground, easy to walk out of.
Heart Tethers. Tier 1 only. Rank 2 vulnerability debuff can get you killed.
Reduced Resistances. Tier 1 only. Rank 2 more than doubles elemental damage taken.
Pyramid Beams. Effortless to dodge with a roll. Trivialized by a corrupted jewel with Corrupted Blood immunity.
Escalating Damage Taken. Manageable with solid defenses. Rough alongside Monster Speed or Lethal Rares.
Impending Doom. Not lethal on its own, but influences your positioning constantly. Take late.
Never Take (Run Enders)
Volatile Fiends. The most dangerous modifier in the game. Percentage-based death explosions ignore even 30,000 Energy Shield. Skip under any circumstance.
Stalking Shade. Ruin stacks persist the entire run. Fail on 7 stacks. Rank 2/3 projectiles are unavoidable. Never take early since 30 rooms of stalking means near-guaranteed death.
Petrification Statues. Getting petrified while surrounded equals death. Prevented entirely by picking Shocking or Burning Turrets first.
Reduced Recovery. 75% recovery reduction at Rank 2 breaks most builds.
Occasional Impotence. You deal no damage for 2 seconds every 8 seconds. Kills DPS windows against bosses.
Blood Mist. Makes monsters immune to damage inside the mist. Turns kill rooms into a slog.
Random Projectiles. Only take on melee builds.
Modifier Interaction Warnings
Never combine Petrification Statues with Time Paradox. Double petrify duration equals death.
Never combine Stalking Shade with Petrification Statues. Avoiding one means eating hits from the other.
Watch Enraged Bosses + Monster Speed + Escalating Damage. This stack turns bosses into one-shot machines.
Vaal Omnitect spawns center-arena and overlaps with boss telegraphs during Round 4/7/10.
The Trialmaster himself is unaffected by any of these modifiers, so the run difficulty resets for the final fight.
Best Trial of Chaos Farming Strategy
The optimal farm rotation depends on your goal: quick fragment income, Adorned hunting, or full 30-room boss rush. Here's the setup that maximizes divines per hour.
Character Prep
Build for defensive layering first. Trial of Chaos punishes glass cannons hard once modifiers stack.
Chaos Inoculation (CI) is the top pick. Immune to Chaos, Bleed, Poison. Trivializes Chaotic Monsters and Toxic Monsters.
Martial Artist with Whirling Assault is a strong 0.5.5 pick since it has great ES nodes (Patient Barrier) and Holo Form for boss damage.
Ward builds with Brass Dome ignore Deadly Monsters and Damaged Defences.
Corrupted Blood immunity jewel trivializes Pyramid Beams for free.
Mageblood works better than Headhunter here since Rare density is low.
Fragment Farming Loop (Fastest Divines Per Hour)
Buy Inscribed Ultimatums cheap. Around 20 Exalts each. Stock up 50+ before starting a session.
Enter the Sanctum of Chaos. Sprint to the Trialmaster obelisk.
Run 10-round versions only. These guarantee a Fate from Round 10, and Fates trade for 8-10 divines each mid-league.
Aim for 12-15 minute runs. Sub-11 minutes is achievable if you skip the elevator delay and know the layouts.
Sell fragments at 8-10 divines. Or hold them early league when prices are 2-3 divines, then resell later for profit.
Target 4-5 runs per hour. This puts you at 32-45 divines per hour with zero setup investment.
30-Room Boss Rush (Adorned Hunt)
Reserve this for characters with strong defenses. Full 30-room runs stack every modifier you pick to their highest tier.
Save the worst mods for the last 5 rooms. Take free picks early (Monster Speed, Lethal Rares, Stormcaller runes) and delay Impending Doom or Stalking Shade until the final stretch when possible.
Collect all 3 Fates automatically at Room 30. No need to run three separate 10-room trials.
Fight the Trialmaster. ~1-in-50 chance to drop The Adorned. Other Uniques include Glimpse of Chaos, Zerphi's Genesis, Mahuxotl's Machination, and Hateforge.
Use the leave-and-return feature. Break the 30-room run into two or three sessions if you want.
Passive Currency Tips While Farming
Live search for helmet bases. Buy underpriced exceptional helmet bases and resell for 5-10 divines profit per flip. Trial of Chaos leaves plenty of downtime between rooms to check listings.
Hold Soul Cores. Soul Core of Askhapa (15 spirit) trades around 2-3 divines. Prices climb mid-league as crafters ramp up.
Sell chaos orbs in stacks. The final boss reliably drops piles of chaos. At 11 chaos to 1 divine, these add up.
Save fragments early league. Sell them for 2-3 divs day one, or hold until week 2-3 when they hit 8-10 divs.
Session Efficiency Tips
Don't board the elevator immediately after clearing. Wait for the small circle to move up first, then step on for a faster ride.
Stand on elevator pads during Survive rooms. All ground hazards are blocked.
Step in and out of blood circles. Faster wave spawns in Sacrifice rooms.
Sprint constantly. Every second between rooms costs you divines per hour.
Impending Doom escort trick: Stay on the back half of the escort statue's circle. The Doom safe spot spawns under your feet, and its growth speed means you can outrun it by moving forward around the statue.
The 0.5.5 rework turns Trial of Chaos from a bland Ascendancy grind into a legitimate endgame farm. It won't beat juiced mapping for peak divines per hour, but it fills a niche that few other pieces of content cover: consistent, low-setup, realized-gain currency farming with a clear boss chase at the end. For casual players with 10 hours per week, 300-350 divines is very achievable. For gigablasters, use it as a fallback when you need a specific upgrade locked in without the volatility of ground loot RNG.
Forbidden Rites runs until Path of Exile 2 1.0 launches on December 11th, so there's plenty of runway to test the reworked trial, farm Fates while prices are still climbing, and chase The Adorned or the new Soul Cores at your own pace.
