PoE 3.29 Recombinator Guide (Modes, Odds, Unpredictable & Predictable Recomb Tips)

The Recombinator has become one of the most powerful crafting tools in Path of Exile 1, letting players merge modifiers from two items into a single output. With patch 3.29 building on the reworks introduced in 3.26 and refined through Secrets of the Atlas, the tool now offers both predictable and unpredictable modes, plus new interactions with league mechanics like the Brine Hook Ducat from Kingsmarch's all-flame crafting. This 3.29 guide walks through what changed, how the odds work, and the tricks that make five-mod and six-mod items reachable without spending divines on gambling.

PoE 1 Recombinator Guide (3.29)

At its core, the Recombinator takes two magic or rare items of the same class and produces a new item that carries over some of the modifiers from both parents. It lives in Kingsmarch and can also be placed as a hideout bench, costing Gold and Thaumaturgic Dust per use. The output is a completely new item, which means imprints cannot restore the inputs, and both parents are destroyed on use.

With that overview covered, the sections below walk through the 3.29 rule changes, how the two modes differ, how item level and essence mods behave, the odds tables that guide every recomb decision, and hands-on strategies for weapons, armour, and staves.

Changes To Recombination in PoE 3.29

Not much was formally listed in the patch notes for recombinator behavior, but player testing during 3.29 has surfaced a few practical shifts worth noting.

Predictable Recomb Mod Isolation Behavior

Players who used the predictable recomb in 3.27 to isolate a single mod (like +1 skill gems) by pairing it with a low-tier crafted mod of high natural weight are reporting different results in 3.29. Where the predictable mode previously delivered 40–50% success on such isolations, current testing shows all crafted mods returning roughly the same 8% figure regardless of the crafted mod's natural weight or tier. Whether this is a silent adjustment or a bug is still being debated in community threads.

Crafted Mods Still Count as Exclusive

Crafted mods continue to behave as exclusive modifiers, meaning only one can appear on the final item. This has caught players off guard when recombining items with breach mods, Alva mods, or aspects, since a crafted mod can overwrite the special mod they were trying to preserve. Be careful with crafted mods on either input if you have "funky mods" in play.

Veiled Craft Trick Still Works

The one situation where crafting a mod still helps: pairing a 1p/0s item with a 0p/1s item and crafting a veiled mod on each. This bumps the odds of keeping both natural mods from around 33% up to roughly 45–55%, depending on weights. It remains the only case where adding a crafted mod actually improves your outcome.

Brine Hook Ducat from All-Flame Crafting

Added with the new league mechanics, the Brine Hook Ducat is arguably the biggest practical change to recomb crafting in 3.29. It adds a non-native natural modifier (NNN) suffix to any item and it works on both inputs to a recomb. Because NNN mods count toward the total affix pool but can never appear on the final item, the Ducat effectively gives you two free suffix "slots" that raise your prefix odds. This basically brings recomb crafting back to 3.25 power levels, letting you slam five-mod items for around 140–225 divines in many cases.

How the Recombination Works in PoE 3.29?

The mechanics function almost identically to the 3.26 version, with a few operational steps you should follow every time.

Step 1: Base Selection

Both inputs have equal odds to be selected as the base. The chosen base contributes its base type, item art, influences, anointments, enchants, quality, implicits, sockets, and links. Imprints, Crucible trees, foreseeing, and intangibility are lost. Defence percentile is randomized.

Step 2: Modifier Pooling

All modifiers from both items are gathered into two pools, prefixes and suffixes, calculated independently. If one item has three prefixes and the other has two, your total prefix pool is five, which feeds into the odds table for the final prefix count.

Step 3: Final Affix Count Roll

Before mods are selected, the game rolls the number of prefixes and suffixes the output will have, weighted by pool size (see the odds table below). Suffixes or prefixes are filled first with a 50/50 coin flip.

Step 4: Modifier Selection

Modifiers are pulled from the pool with weight-based probability. NNN mods are still counted toward the pool total but are silently removed if the chosen base cannot legally carry them. Exclusive mods (essence, crafted, breach, incursion, aspect, elevated influence, veiled, metacraft) allow at most one on the final item. Once one exclusive mod is picked, all others are removed from both pools.

Step 5: Output Delivery

The two inputs are destroyed and the new item appears. There is no imprint safety net.

Predictable Recombination vs Unpredictable Recombination

Choosing the right mode matters more than most beginners think. The button toggles between the two, and the game frequently defaults to Predictable, so double-check before each craft.

Predictable Recombination

  • How it works: You pick the specific affixes you want to keep from each input. The game shows a success chance based on the number and tier of selected mods. On failure, no item is produced and both inputs are still destroyed.

  • Best for: Simple two-mod or three-mod isolations where you have one item with a rare mod surrounded by junk, and you want to move that rare mod onto a cleaner base.

  • Limitation: Does not reliably move grasping mail mods like "armour applies to overcap fire resistance" or similar drop-only mods.

Unpredictable Recombination

  • How it works: An item is always produced. The affixes on the output are chosen by weighted random selection following the pool and odds rules described above.

  • Best for: Building five- and six-mod endgame items, moving NNN mods, and any craft that leverages the Brine Hook Ducat.

  • Advantage: Never fails outright, so materials aren't wasted on a total loss.

For most endgame crafting in 3.29, unpredictable mode is the default choice. The one clear exception is when you have a single high-value mod on a junk base and want the cheapest possible route to isolating it on a better base.

Recombinator Item Level

Item level on the output follows a specific formula that caps at the higher of the two inputs.

The math: output ilvl equals the average of the two inputs plus 2, rounded down, then capped to the higher input. Expressed cleanly:

image

Practical Item Level Table

  • Two ilvl 84 items produce an ilvl 84 output.

  • Ilvl 84 + ilvl 80 produces ilvl 84.

  • Ilvl 84 + ilvl 79 produces ilvl 83.

  • Ilvl 100 + ilvl 1 produces ilvl 52.

The takeaway: pairing a low-ilvl item with a very high one drags the output down. For armour stacker chests or T1 attribute rolls, aim for ilvl 84 or higher on both inputs. To hit T1 mods on Twilight Regalia and similar bases, ilvl 86+ is the target on at least one input.

Recombinator Essence Mods

Essence interactions are one of the more nuanced parts of recomb crafting, and they behave differently depending on the essence tier used.

Special Essence Mods vs Tiered Essence Mods

Special essence modifiers (the ones with no tier number, from Deafening or Shrieking versions of some essences) are treated as exclusive mods. Hold Alt over the item to check: if there's no tier number, it's a true essence mod and only one exclusive can survive the recomb.

Regular essence-created mods that do show a tier number are treated identically to a naturally rolled mod of the same tier. These do not eat your exclusive slot and behave like any normal affix in the pool.

The One-Exclusive Rule

Only one exclusive modifier can end up on the output. If you combine two items each carrying a different essence exclusive, only one will survive. This means you cannot merge two different essence-exclusive mods onto a single item.

Using Essence Mods as NNN Padding

The Brine Hook Ducat isn't the only source of NNN suffixes. Certain essences apply attribute mods to bases they wouldn't naturally roll on. Rage essence, for instance, adds strength to an int-based warlock glove. Since strength is non-native on int gear, it counts toward the suffix pool but cannot appear on the final item. This lets you use essences as free NNN padding when the Ducat isn't available.

PoE Recomb Odds

The odds tables from Butsicles' research remain the reference for 3.29 crafting. These govern how many mods end up on the output based on the total pool size.

Modifier Count Distribution

For a given pool size (either prefix or suffix, calculated independently), the odds of the final affix count are:

  • 1 mod in pool: 41% for 0 mods, 59% for 1 mod

  • 2 mods in pool: 66.7% for 1 mod, 33.3% for 2 mods

  • 3 mods in pool: 40% for 1 mod, 50% for 2 mods, 10% for 3 mods

  • 4 mods in pool: 10% for 1 mod, 60% for 2 mods, 30% for 3 mods

  • 5 mods in pool: 43% for 2 mods, 57% for 3 mods

  • 6 mods in pool: 30% for 2 mods, 70% for 3 mods

Two Recomb Rules Worth Remembering

  • Always keep three unique affixes per side: When aiming for a 3p/3s output, both inputs together should carry three different prefixes and three different suffixes. Duplicates shrink your pool and hurt your odds.

  • Match affix patterns for intermediate steps: Combining 2p/1s with 2p/1s outperforms 2p/1s with 1p/2s. Same-pattern recombs feed the pipeline better even if they produce fewer 2p/2s items directly.

Recommended Crafting Paths

The best final steps for pushing toward 5+ affix items are:

  • 3p/2s + 1p/3s (great odds for 3p/3s)

  • 2p/2s + 1p/3s or 3p/1s (about 35% for the 5 or 6 affix result)

  • 3p/2s + 3p/1s is a trap and should be avoided

Cost-Efficiency Tips

Craft the lowest tier of a cheap mod (like strength) on any 1-suffix-empty item before hitting recombine. This lowers Thaumaturgic Dust cost per operation. Just remember crafted mods count as exclusive, so don't stack them on items with breach, Alva, aspect, or other exclusive mods you want to preserve.

The Brine Hook Ducat Multiplier

The Ducat NNN suffix works on both input items simultaneously. If you're recombining two items that each have two real prefixes and you slap a Ducat on each, you're feeding four prefixes into the pool while the suffix pool gets two NNN-only slots. Your 3p output odds jump from 10% (in a 3-pool) to 30% (in a 4-pool), and the suffix pool still has a 90% chance to keep at least one real suffix. This is the single biggest odds-mover available in 3.29 and the main reason five-mod slams are reachable for 140–225 divines instead of 500+.

Working With Non-Native Natural Modifiers (NNN)

NNN mods are the trick behind most modern recomb crafting, so knowing how to spot them and how to weaponize them is a skill on its own.

What Counts as an NNN Mod

A non-native natural modifier is any mod that cannot roll on the chosen output base through normal means. Common categories include:

  • Attribute-locked mods: Spell suppression on a strength base, or minion damage on a non-minion wand.

  • Influence mods: Redeemer, Warlord, Shaper, Elder, Crusader, Hunter, or Redeemer mods on a base without matching influence.

  • Base-specific mods: Grasping mail mods on a Necrotic Armour, or Convening Wand minion mods on any other wand.

  • Fractured mods: If the chosen base is not fractured, the fractured mod is treated as NNN and dropped.

The Core NNN Trick

NNN mods count toward the affix pool total when the game rolls the number of output mods, but they're silently removed at selection time if the base can't legally carry them. That means padding your inputs with NNN mods inflates your pool size without adding real competition to the final selection. More pool = more expected mods on the output.

Practical Ways to Add NNN Mods

  • Brine Hook Ducat: Adds an intangibility-gated NNN suffix. The lowest-intangibility copy is always the one to keep.

  • Off-attribute essences: Rage essence on int bases, Anger on dex bases, and so on. Any essence that forces an attribute mod onto a base that wouldn't naturally roll it.

  • Kishara's Ducat: Splits an item into four copies with isolated mods, useful for building single-affix inputs to feed into NNN-padded recombs.

Intangibility Management

Every Ducat use adds 5% intangibility to the item, which raises the chance of the all-flame bench giving a single normal outcome instead of multiple copies. When picking among four Ducat outputs, always take the copy with the lowest intangibility. Recomb strips intangibility from the base entirely, so you never carry it forward past a single craft cycle.

PoE 3.29 Recomb Strategy: Crafting 5xT1 and 6xT1 Items

Multi-affix crafts are where the Recombinator earns its keep. The general shape of the craft is: build 1-affix items, chain them into 2-affix items, chain those into 3+ affix items, and finish with harvest or targeted crafts.

Step 1: Prepare 1-Affix Items

Alt-spam bases until you land a single desired prefix or suffix. Unwanted extra affixes at this stage are cheap to strip with an annulment orb or "prefixes/suffixes cannot be changed" plus scour. Aim for a stockpile of 1p and 1s items covering every mod you want on the final piece.

Step 2: Build 2-Affix Items

Combine two 1-affix items to produce 2p, 2s, or 1p/1s outputs. All three results feed later steps. Make sure every mod across both inputs is unique so you don't lock yourself out of 3-unique-prefix or 3-unique-suffix outputs later.

Step 3: Multi-Affix Recombination

Target 3p/3s outputs when possible. If you can't get there, 2p/3s and 3p/2s are strong intermediate goals. Always pair items so the combined pool has three unique prefixes and three unique suffixes, even if you only want five affixes on the final item.

Step 4: Intermediate Recomb Discipline

Same-pattern combines (2p/1s + 2p/1s, or 1p/2s + 1p/2s) produce better feeder items than mismatched patterns. Avoid 2p/1s + 1p/2s unless you have no alternative. Excess 1p/3s items can substitute for 1p/2s inputs when your stock runs low.

Step 5: Exclusive Mod Placement

Only one exclusive affix survives per recomb, so if you're moving an essence mod, a breach mod, or a veiled mod, make sure the other input has zero exclusives. Pair (Essence + T1 suppression) with (T1 suppression + T1 chaos), not with another essence item.

Step 6: Final Cheat Sheet

Every recomb should be planned around: three unique prefixes, three unique suffixes, one or zero exclusives across both inputs, and a pool size that matches your target output count. Skipping any of these rules cuts your odds sharply.

How To Recombinate Endgame Axes and Weapons in PoE 3.29?

Triple-prefix physical axes remain one of the strongest recomb targets in 3.29. The three prefixes to chase are percent increased physical damage (percent fizz), hybrid physical damage (hybrid fizz), and flat added physical damage (flat fizz).

Materials Checklist

  • Orbs of Alteration and Augmentation in bulk.

  • Thaumaturgic Dust from Kingsmarch.

  • Gold reserves for recomb costs.

  • As many ilvl 83+ Vaal Axes or preferred axe bases as you can farm.

  • Brine Hook Ducats if available.

Base Preparation

Show your preferred axe bases in your loot filter and scoop every ilvl 83+ two-hander you find during mapping. Dump them in a stash tab and transmute them all to magic rarity.

Regex Setup

Two regex strings drive the workflow. The first highlights axes with valuable mods or an empty prefix slot, so you know which items are worth attention. The second is a list of valuable mod names, used to check outputs and to lower dust cost during recomb planning. Preset regex strings for two-handed axes are widely available; adapt them for one-handers or maces as needed.

Alt-Scour Cycle

Fill inventory with alteration and augmentation orbs. Apply the first regex to your stash. Alt every non-highlighted axe until it lights up, then check with the second regex for valuable mods and pull those aside. Augment the singles, check again, and repeat until you have a working stack of magic axes with desired prefixes.

Recomb Setup

Any magic axe with a prefix and no suffix should get the lowest-tier strength craft applied at the bench before recombing. This lowers dust cost per operation. Set the Recombinator to Unpredictable (blue glow).

The Three-Prefix Pipeline

First, pair flat fizz with percent fizz for one double-prefix axe. Second, pair flat fizz with hybrid fizz for another double-prefix axe. Each of these has roughly a 33% success rate. Duplicating flat fizz on both inputs raises the odds of that mod carrying over since it's easiest to roll.

Third, combine the two double-prefix axes to try for the full triple. Expect 20+ attempts to land the clean 3-prefix result. When it hits, finish suffixes with harvest reforge, veiled exalt, or multimod as your build requires.

How To Recombinate Armour Stacker Body Armour in PoE 3.29?

Armour stackers rely on grasping mail mods transferred onto energy shield, evasion/ES hybrid, or pure evasion bases. The workflow below applies to all three.

Choose the Right Mode

Predictable recomb does not move grasping mail mods like "armour applies to overcap fire resistance" reliably. Use unpredictable mode for these transfers.

Base and Item Level Prep

Acquire Twilight Regalia or similar bases at ilvl 84 or 85 minimum. For T1 mods on the finished item, push toward ilvl 86 on at least one input, since the output ilvl equals average plus 2, capped at the higher input.

Isolating the Grasping Mail Mod

If the target mod is a prefix, make it the only prefix. Elder, Shaper, and Conqueror influence mods cannot be recombed out, but breach mods and drop-only mods can. If the grasping mail has two prefixes, annul and hope you keep the right one. Avoid Eldritch orbs during this phase since they can lock unwanted mods.

Kishara's Ducat or the Black Morgan split method both work for isolating stubborn grasping mail mods.

Influencing the Base

Shaper or Elder orbs are usually the cheapest influence path. To force the influence to land as a prefix, block all empty suffix slots with dummy crafts before applying the orb. Follow up with "prefixes cannot be changed" and scour to leave just the breach mod and the influence mod.

Transfer Recomb

With the isolated grasping mail mod on one item and the prepared influenced base on the other, run unpredictable recomb. If the game picks the influenced base as the output, the grasping mail mod transfers 100% since it's the only eligible prefix. If it picks the wrong base, remove the crafted mod and retry with the next prepared base.

Fracture and Finish

Fill the item to four mods before fracturing to raise fracture odds toward the mod you want. Use "prefixes cannot be changed" plus harvest reforge defence for T1 armour or ES rolls. Annul unwanted suffixes and fill remaining slots with exalts or harvest crafts.

Eldritch Implicits

Set eldritch implicits last with orbs of conflict, ichors, and embers until the aura matches your build. Handle heist enchants before socketing since enchants can reset sockets and links.

How To Craft Endgame 6+ Staff With Recomb?

Plus-six staves for spell casters follow a compact recomb path that leans hard on Kishara's Ducat and the veiled crafting bench.

Base Shopping

Search trade for staves with +2 to all spell skill gems and +4 to lightning spell skill gems, 25% spell block implicit, not corrupted, not fractured, no influence. Buy the cheapest options with the fewest existing mods. Magic-rarity bases are often cheaper than rares and skip the isolation step.

Isolating +2 and +4 With Kishara's Ducat

If you bought rare bases, drop them in the all-flame bench with Kishara's Ducat to split them into four copies with isolated single mods. Pick the copy carrying your target +2 or +4 with the lowest intangibility. Failed splits (four copies all missing the target mod) get discarded.

Recomb Setup for the Prefix Pair

Take one base with isolated +2 all spell and one base with isolated +4 lightning. Enable unpredictable recombination. Odds sit around 33–40% per attempt. Craft a cheap suffix on any 0-suffix base first to lower dust cost.

Suffix Crafting Path

Once you land the +2 +4 double prefix, apply "can have up to three crafted modifiers" plus "prefixes cannot be changed" plus a random cheap prefix craft (mana works). Then use a Veiled Chaos Orb inside the all-flame bench to convert the item, taking the output copy with no filled suffixes and the lowest intangibility.

Unveil for either chance to deal double damage (max DPS) or cast speed (quality of life). If you miss, redo the "can have up to three crafted mods" plus prefix-can't-be-changed plus veiled chaos loop until you land your preferred unveil.

Final Suffixes

Finish with spell damage/mana regen (or your build's preferred hybrid caster prefix) and chance to block attacks or another build-critical suffix. Optionally divine inside the all-flame bench to fish for 13% block or high spell damage rolls, and use tempering orbs for a caster damage enchant.

Recomb Failure Recovery

Failed recombs are part of the process. Knowing how to salvage the output saves PoE currency.

Partial Failure on Prefixes

If your final recomb dropped a prefix, the output usually still has usable material for restarting the last step. Pair the survivor with a fresh 1p or 2p input carrying the missing mod and rerun.

Suffix Loss (10% Failure Path)

The 90% suffix retention rate means occasional total suffix wipes. When both suffixes drop, treat the item as a partial rebuild: recraft the missing suffix through veiled orbs, essence, or harvest, and re-enter the pipeline at the appropriate stage.

Exclusive Mod Conflicts

If you accidentally recombed with two exclusive mods and lost the wrong one, there's no recovery on the recomb itself. Reroll the exclusive with a fresh essence or veiled craft on a new base and try again.

Recombination Cost Management Tips

Recomb crafts eat currency fast. A few habits keep the total bill under control.

Dust Optimization

Every unwanted crafted mod on either input raises dust cost. Craft the cheapest lowest-tier suffix (like +2 strength) on empty slots to lower dust, but skip this if the item already carries exclusive mods you want to preserve.

Base Sourcing

Buying magic-rarity bases from trade is often cheaper than farming rare bases and isolating mods yourself. Search directly for magic items with the mods you want and skip the Kishara's Ducat step entirely when possible.

Batch Crafting

Craft in batches of similar items rather than one-off. Prepping ten 1-affix inputs at once and running the pipeline in sequence uses your dust and gold more efficiently than starting from scratch each time.

Expected Cost Ranges

  • Plus-six spell staff: 20–30 divines per staff with tempering.

  • Triple-prefix physical two-handed axe: variable, but 20+ recomb attempts is normal.

  • Five-mod endgame item with Brine Hook Ducat: 140–225 divines average.

  • Armour stacker chest with T1 mods: highly variable, often 100+ divines depending on fracture luck.

That covers the working state of the Recombinator in 3.29, from mechanics to endgame crafts. The tool rewards planning: prep isolated 1-affix items, chain 2p/2s intermediates, respect the exclusive-mod rules, and lean on the Brine Hook Ducat wherever possible. With patience and a stockpile of Thaumaturgic Dust, even six-mod endgame items are within reach without draining a divine stash.
