Captainsbane is a large unique crustacean beast-type mini-boss exclusive to the Curse of the Allflame league mechanic, added to the game in PoE patch 3.29.0. It counts as one of the temporary league special bosses permanently tied to the Allflame Voyage content. Captainsbane has fixed passive defensive and loot modifiers that make it a priority farm target:

• +15000% increased item rarity from slain monster

• +100% increased experience from slain monster

• Action Speed cannot drop below 50% of its base value

• Immunity to knockback effects

• Cannot be stunned for 2000ms after any stun expires; also immune to re-stuns while already stunned

• Balanced elemental resistances to fire, cold, lightning and chaos damage

Core Purpose

Defeating Captainsbane unlocks one tier of Vesper’s Allflame crafting upgrades. Multiple upgrade tiers are required to unlock powerful currency crafts like Fracturing Orbs, which consume large amounts of Sulphur. Every Captainsbane kill grants one permanent Vesper upgrade tier. Higher tiers unlock stronger currency crafts.

Where and How to Find PoE 3.29 Captainsbane

Captainsbane Spawn Location

Captainsbane only spawns inside The Fathomless Depths, the underwater zone accessed by assembling connected Charts into a Voyage. This area relies entirely on Allflame Lanterns to create safe zones. Leaving the lantern’s light radius applies the Drowning debuff; players die instantly within 5 seconds unless they return to lit safe ground. 

Always carry extra movement skills and track Allflame Lantern placement. The Drowning debuff’s instant-kill timer punishes careless positioning during Captainsbane fights. Avoid pulling the boss far from lantern light sources.

Captainsbane Spawn Methods

Method 1: Random Natural Spawn (Free, Low Consistency)

Captainsbane can randomly appear in any Chart/Voyage run with no special modifiers. This spawn relies purely on RNG; many players report completing 10+ Voyages without seeing the boss spawn naturally. This is the passive, low-cost farming strategy for casual players.

Method 2: Guaranteed Spawn via Voyage Border Modifier (Controlled, Resource Cost)

The only reliable way to force Captainsbane to spawn is rolling a specific edge/border modifier on your Voyage deck: adjacent areas contain Captainsbane.

• Build your full Voyage chart layout on the Sovereign planning board

• Locate the Voyage modifier reroll icon in the bottom-right corner

• Reroll border modifiers using Dead Man’s Dust

• Stop rerolling once the Captainsbane spawn modifier appears

• Launch the Voyage; the large unique crustacean boss will spawn visibly in the Depths and cannot be missed

Farming Notes

• Reroll cost doubles after every single reroll but fully resets when you start a new Voyage

• High reroll Dust costs make forced spawns inefficient for long-term farming; random natural spawns are recommended for casual players

• The tileset, monster packs and special encounters inside The Fathomless Depths change based on which Charts you assemble for your Voyage

Distinction from Other Allflame Bosses

Do not confuse Captainsbane with Velka, the Tide Witch: Velka spawns only on the Kishara’s Rest Chart and is a separate league boss with distinct high-HP phases and invulnerability windows. Captainsbane is a smaller mini-boss with no invulnerable phases.

All Captainsbane drops come from killing this unique monster in The Fathomless Depths. 

1. Spectral Infuser (Craft Utility Currency)

Drops from slain Captainsbane mobs in Chart/Voyage Depths runs. Players confirm the guaranteed spawn modifier reliably yields this item after killing the boss. This currency drastically improves loot quality during repeated Voyage farming runs and speeds up Allflame resource collection.

Effects

• All Essences found in Charts and Voyages gain a 30% chance to upgrade one tier higher

• Every Strongbox opened in Charts and Voyages spawns at minimum Rare rarity

2. Dread Captain's Cutlass (Unique Ghostflame Blade)

Exclusively drops from Captainsbane in The Fathomless Depths (Allflame league only). It cannot be created via Orb of Chance.

• Level requirement: 68
  

• Attribute requirements: 113 Strength, 113 Dexterity

• Can be Allflame Crafted as if it were a Rare item

• Cannot gain the Intangibility modifier

Crafting Rules

• Its implicit allows full rare-style crafting: players can add fractured, influenced, veiled modifiers or Abyss sockets using standard currency

• It still counts as a Unique item for normal crafting rules (Vaal Orb corruption, socket rolling, linking)

• Its 2D weapon artwork visually changes with each added explicit modifier, up to a maximum of six affixes
