Season 15 of Diablo 4 brought one of the most interesting itemization additions the game has seen in a while, and Soul Splinters are right at the center of it. These socketable items slot into your jewelry, hand out powerful bonuses, and come attached to real penalties that force you to think about how you build your character. Alongside returning legacy uniques from Diablo 1, 2, and 3, Mythic system reworks, and additional Torment tiers, Soul Splinters have reshaped how players approach gear optimization at the highest levels.
With so much going on, players need a clear picture of what these gems do, how they interact with builds, and how to obtain them. The sections below walk through everything you need to know about Soul Splinters in Season 15.
What Is a Soul Splinter?
offensive or defensive bonuses while attaching a downside that forces you to play around the penalty.
Key facts to know:
They slot into jewelry (rings and amulets), similar to how regular gems work in armor.
They provide elemental and physical resistances based on the type of Splinter.
They come with a give-and-take design where every strong bonus is paired with a drawback such as more damage taken, reduced resource, slower movement, or other penalties.
They can be upgraded (amalgamated) in the Horadric Cube, letting you push them into higher tiers of quality.
Warning: if you salvage all gems at the Jeweler, your Splinters get destroyed too. Favorite them or store them in your stash to keep them safe.
The give-and-take design is what separates Soul Splinters from regular gems. You must find ways around those debuffs while using the bonuses to their full potential.
How to Use Soul Splinter Gems?
The system is straightforward, but the real skill comes in matching the right Splinter to the right build.
Where to slot them
Soul Splinters go directly into the sockets on your rings and amulets. On top of that, the returning legacy unique Leoric's Crown counts as jewelry and increases the effect of any gem socketed into it by 75 to 100%. That interaction means most builds will gravitate toward Leoric's Crown for the boosted Splinter effect.
How to pick the right one
Because each Splinter has a downside, the best pick depends on your build. A few examples:
Damage over time builds do not need Critical Strike Chance, so Splinter of Hellfire is nearly a free damage boost for them.
High mobility builds can shrug off the movement speed loss from Splinter of Pain to gain the damage reduction.
Builds that do not spend much of their primary resource can equip Splinter of Sin without noticing the resource cap reduction.
Upgrade path (Amalgamation)
Once you find lower-tier Splinters, you can bring them to the Horadric Cube and amalgamate five of the same rarity into one of the next rarity up. So five Magic Splinters become one Rare, five Rares become one Legendary, and five Legendaries become one Unique. To go from Magic all the way to Unique of a single type, you need 125 Magic Splinters worth of drops (though most players will find some higher-rarity ones along the way).
Soul Splinter Types
Soul Splinters come in four rarities:
Magic
Rare
Legendary
Unique
Higher rarities give better resistance values and stronger bonus effects. There are eight different Splinter types in total, each tied to a specific resistance and offering a unique gameplay effect.
Soul Splinter Gems List with Effects
Here is the full list of Soul Splinters ranked from the strongest and most build-friendly down to the ones with the harshest downsides.
1. Splinter of Hellfire (Best Overall)
Resistance: 35/50/375/625 Resistance to All Elements
Effect: You deal 40/60/80/100%[x] increased damage but lose 100% Critical Strike Chance.
This is the top pick for any damage over time build. Poison Rogue, Twisting Blades, Spirit Storm builds and similar setups do not rely on Critical Strike Chance, so losing 100% of it costs almost nothing. In exchange, you gain a flat 100% multiplicative damage boost, which is huge for pushing higher Torment tiers.
2. Splinter of Pain
Resistance: 250/1750/2625/4375 Poison Resistance
Effect: You gain 10/20/30/40% Damage Reduction, but you lose 30% Movement Speed.
The trade-off here is very forgiving. Losing 30% movement speed matters much less than gaining 40% flat damage reduction, especially in higher tier content where survivability is king. Almost every build can benefit from equipping this one, which is why many players slot it in as a default.
3. Splinter of the Black Soulstone
Stats: 7/20/30/50 All Stats
Effect: Killing enemies absorbs a soul for 15 seconds. Each soul increases your damage by 2/3/4/5%[x], but increases your damage taken by 0.5%. This effect stacks but does not refresh.
Scales infinitely with kill count and works beautifully in add-heavy content like Helltides or pit farming. The catch is that at boss encounters with no adds spawning, your stacks fall off and this becomes zero DPS. Warlocks in particular love this one because they can kill their own minions to build stacks. Note: this Splinter does not appear to drop from Nightmare Dungeon reserves, so it is farmed through other means (see below).
4. Splinter of Sin
Resistance: 250/1750/2625/4375 Lightning Resistance
Effect: You gain 10/20/30/40%[x] Maximum Health, but your Maximum Primary Resource is reduced by 30%.
A 40% multiplicative maximum health boost is enormous for tankiness. If your build does not lean heavily on resource pooling, the 30% resource cap reduction barely matters. A great fit for classes that spend fast and refill quickly.
5. Splinter of Damnation
Resistance: 250/1750/2625/4375 Shadow Resistance
Effect: Killing an Elite Pack increases Monster Power by 1 for 10/15/20/25 seconds.
More Monster Power translates to more experience and better rewards. In Helltides and dense elite farming zones, this Splinter can stack the encounter difficulty in your favor for better payouts. A creative option for players focused on farming XP and loot.
6. Splinter of Anguish
Resistance: 250/1750/2625/4375 Fire Resistance
Effect: You gain 15/20/25/35%[+] Critical Strike Chance and Attack Speed, but your Primary Resource Costs are increased by 30%.
35% additive Critical Strike Chance and Attack Speed is a huge damage spike for crit-based builds. The 30% increased resource cost hurts spender builds, but if you have resource generation to spare, this is a strong offensive pick.
7. Splinter of the Mother
Resistance: 250/1750/2625/4375 Physical Resistance
Effect: You are Unhindered. Touching enemies makes them Vulnerable for 10 seconds. After touching 100/150/200/250 enemies, you are Stunned for 4 seconds.
Permanent Unhindered plus free Vulnerable application is a strong package, but the periodic 4-second stun is painful in higher difficulties where standing still means dying. Best for builds that already have Unstoppable uptime to skip past the stun.
8. Splinter of Lies
Resistance: 250/1750/2625/4375 Cold Resistance
Effect: You gain 40/60/80/100% increased Gold Drop Rate, Crafting Material Drop Rate, and 25% Bonus Experience, but you are always Weakened and Vulnerable.
The rewards are excellent for farming, but permanent Weakened and Vulnerable is rough, especially with the Torment 13, 14, and 15 tiers where you might get one-shotted. Best used in safe farming content where you already outgear the enemies. Many players recommend this as the first Splinter to slot into Leoric's Crown, because the extra drop rate feeds every other farm you do afterward.
How To Get Soul Splinter Gems
Farming Splinters is the real grind of Season 15. Here are the confirmed sources, ordered by efficiency.
Method 1: Escalating Nightmare Dungeons (Best Method)
This is by far the most consistent way to target-farm a specific Splinter type. Each Splinter maps to a gem type based on the resistance it gives:
Splinter of Anguish (Fire) = Ruby Reserve
Splinter of Pain (Poison) = Emerald Reserve
Splinter of Lies (Cold) = Sapphire Reserve
Splinter of Sin (Lightning) = Topaz Reserve
Splinter of Hellfire (All Elements) = Diamond Reserve
Splinter of Damnation (Shadow) = Amethyst Reserve
Splinter of the Mother (Physical) = Skull Reserve
Splinter of the Black Soulstone = does NOT drop from reserves (see other methods)
How it works: When you run an Escalating Nightmare Dungeon and pick the matching reserve affix between floors, the Horadric chests on that floor drop the corresponding Splinter. The boss at the end can also drop them, sometimes up to Legendary quality. A single T3 Escalation can drop 15 to 25+ Splinters when counting Rares as five Magics each.
Setup tips:
Take the Branching Pathways node in the Nightmare Dungeon section of your War Plans. This gives you three portal choices between floors, so you can much more reliably pick the reserve you want.
Bosses drop Escalating Sigils, so once you have the setup you can farm forever.
You can also amalgamate five regular Nightmare Sigils into one Escalating Sigil.
The third floor (T3) drops the most, so save your reserve pick for later floors when possible.
Estimated time to Unique: around 5 to 7 T3 Escalation runs of the correct reserve type, which is faster than farming Flawless Rubies used to be.
Method 2: Reputation Architect Cages
Once you max out your seasonal reputation, every additional reputation point gives you Mystery Creator / Architect Cages. These cages contain guaranteed Soul Splinters, usually in Magic or Rare quality. To level reputation faster, kill elites and bosses (Escalating Nightmare Dungeons are again the fastest source).
Method 3: Undercity Secret Vendor
Deep inside the Undercity, after slaying a Portal Prankster goblin, a hidden merchant spawns at the very end of the run. This vendor sells one or two Splinters per stock, with prices in Forgotten Souls (around 666 per Splinter) plus gold. You can restock supply once for free per visit. Be careful with Forgotten Souls since they are also needed for masterworking.
Method 4: Helltide Ruptures
Helltide Ruptures have a chance to drop a random Soul Splinter, plus they can level up your Prime Evil Splinters of Hatred, Destruction, and Terror. Look for spots on the map where two or three Ruptures overlap for the best density. Opening chests during a Rupture also has a decent chance to drop a Splinter.
Method 5: Uber Tristram (Echo of Tristram)
The first Uber Tristram kill on any character grants a guaranteed Unique Soul Splinter, but only from a limited pool: Splinter of Lies, Splinter of the Black Soulstone, and Splinter of the Mother. Anguish, Pain, Hellfire, Sin, and Damnation do not drop from here.
How to access it:
Farm the Prime Evil capstone dungeons (T10 or higher, tuned for Torment 13) to get Prime Evil Splinters of Hatred (Mephisto), Destruction (Baal), and Terror (Diablo).
Complete the Decal Journeys secret quest by clicking 10 shiny items in the open world.
Talk to the cart in the Parent Library to open a portal to the Echo of Tristram.
Combine the three Prime Evil Splinters in the Horadric Cube to craft a Reef Lucky Coin.
Toss the coin into the fountain to summon the three Prime Evils. Killing them drops the Unique Splinter plus a Hellfire Torch (Mythic Charm).
Tip: Because the reward only triggers on the first kill per character, you can rotate portals with a friend on fresh characters to farm additional Uniques. Just note the Uber Tristram portal has an occasional bug where it fails to spawn after tossing the coin.
Method 6: Prime Evil Boss Runs
The three capstone dungeons (Mephisto, Baal, Diablo) can drop any of the three Prime Evil Splinters, and they also have a rare chance to drop Unique Soul Splinters directly. Drop rates are extremely low, in the range of 1 in 50 to 1 in 100 runs, so this is not efficient unless you also want Mythics and other capstone loot.
Method 7: Infernal Hordes
The gem chest at the end of an Infernal Horde run can drop Soul Splinters. If you stack Chaos Waves and Goblin waves for a big Aether payout (3K to 5K+), the gem chest reward becomes juicy enough to yield a few Splinters. Not the most efficient method, but a decent side option for Horde enjoyers.
Method 8: Whimsyshire (Cow Level)
Whimshire has been confirmed to drop Soul Splinters, but the rate is extremely low. Not worth farming specifically.
Method 9: Overland Ambushes
Rare demon-hunting events in the overworld drop a guaranteed Splinter. When a Prime Evil ambushes you during a Helltide or open world content, you have 30 seconds to fight or flee. The fight is tough but the guaranteed drop makes it worthwhile.
Prime Evil Splinters vs. Soul Splinters (Quick Clarification)
Season 15 introduces two different Splinter systems, which can be confusing:
Prime Evil Splinters (Hatred, Destruction, Terror) are consumables used to swap your Prime Evil Power at the seasonal altar. Baal (Destruction) is often recommended for Under City and tower pushing, Mephisto (Hatred) for Nightmare Dungeon farming, and Diablo (Terror) for Helltide farming. You can freely swap between them.
Soul Splinters are the eight socketable gems detailed in this guide (Hellfire, Pain, Black Soulstone, Sin, Damnation, Anguish, Mother, Lies).
Both drop from overlapping activities, so do not mix them up.
Getting a full set of Unique Splinters is the real endgame chase this season. Pick your targets by build, farm the matching gem reserves, and let amalgamation do the rest.
