PoE 3.29 Best Builds for League Starter & Endgame | PoE 3.29 Tier List

Path of Exile 3.29 Curse of the Allflame has arrived, and with it comes one of the largest waves of balance changes in recent memory. From the brand new Luminary Ascendancy for the Scion, to widespread spellcaster buffs, socket color rework, and a full Abyss revamp, players are scrambling to figure out which builds will dominate the league. This tier list guide covers the strongest Ascendancies, the top league starters and endgame builds for trade mode, and the most reliable picks for SSF from campaign to red maps.

Updated on July 22nd, 2026 based on the PoE 3.29 Patch Notes and GGG Live Stream. And the PoE 3.29 Tier List will be keeping updated with more meta builds based on testing and feedback after the league release!

PoE 3.29 Tier List - Best League Starter Builds for Trade & SSF

The 3.29 patch centers around the seafaring Corsair captain Valery and her ship the Sovereign, tasking players with recovering treasures using an Allflame-powered bathysphere. Alongside the league mechanic, GGG rolled out sweeping systemic changes: the socket color system now matches PoE 2 (all sockets are white by default with gem-color quality bonuses), Abyss and Legion have been reworked to isolate their unique rewards, Talismans received a complete overhaul with enchant-style implicits, and fracturing has replaced item splitting.

On the build side, self-cast spellcasters got the biggest attention pass in years, with fire spells receiving lower mana costs and higher added damage effectiveness, lightning spells getting faster cast times at a higher mana cost, and shadow/physical spells receiving stronger crit chance. A new Luminary Ascendancy joins the Scion, four new Pact Exceptional Skill Gems arrived, two new Exceptional Supports (Coursing Currents and Crystalfall) shipped, and multiple Transfigured skills, including Holy Hammers of Spirals, Reap of Butchery, and Divine Blast of Radiance were introduced. With all of that in mind, let's get into the tier list itself.

PoE 3.29 Best Builds for League Starter & Endgame (Trade Mode)

The 3.29 patch brings significant meta shifts with major buffs to Winter Orb, changes to Kinetic Fusillade, the new Luminary Mercenary ascendancy, and substantial DoT skill buffs. Below is the updated tier list based on softcore trade with early-to-mid game farm viability in mind.

1. Winter Orb Elementalist

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

The biggest hype build of the league. Winter Orb now shoots three projectiles instead of one, gained 1.5% base crit, and got a 10% flat damage buff, essentially triple damage on single target due to shotgunning. Weaker day-one single target than top starters (creeping frost variants can actually out-damage it early), but one of the strongest mid and late-game builds in the meta. Once you get duration, you channel briefly, and it auto-fires across the map. Recommended to start Cold DoT and transition once you have currency.

2. Kinetic Fusillade Ballista Hierophant

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Received a 15-20% nerf across the board including ascendancy, skill damage, crit nodes, and the loss of the belt anointment for extra ballistas. Still one of the strongest builds because it started at the top. Way smoother early game since duration requirements are lower, and you no longer brick your attack speed. Extremely safe totem playstyle where you place and go.

3. Luminary Mercenary Scion

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐☆☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

The new Scion ascendancy grants a permanent Diablo II style mercenary you gear up and support. Best merc archetypes include Kineticist (map clear via Kinetic Blast), Many-shot bow mercs, or Blade Ambusher with Spectral Helix / Molten Strike for single target. Flame Length scales merc damage with your HP, so 10-20k HP creates absurd damage. Not recommended as a raw starter. Start something else and transition, or you risk a miserable campaign if you don't roll a good merc.

📍 Check out how to set up the Luminary Mercenary Scion Build

4. Storm Burst Totem Hierophant

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Massively buffed last league. Totem ramp-up is essentially instant, and Repulsion Support makes the orbs explode outward, fixing the traditional clear issues. Totems taunt monsters, providing effective tankiness beyond what numbers suggest. Massive Uber damage on low budgets. New playstyle involves spamming totems constantly to trigger explosions rather than letting them channel.

📍 Check out how to set up the Luminary Mercenary Scion Build

5. Earthshatter Berserker and Boneshatter

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

The longest-running meta slam build and still the best boss/map rushing option for pure progression. Auto-exert war cries make it far less button-intensive than before. Hydrosphere interaction is now smoother, effectively doubling single-target damage. Best paired with an RF transition later for endgame Breach/Abyss farming.

📍 Check out how to set up the Earthshatter Berserker Build

6. Bleed Slam Slayer

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Solid alternative to Earthshatter and highly versatile. Playable as Ground Slam, Sunder, Thunder, Earthquake, or Perforate. New bleed explode implicit on gloves this league is a significant buff. Val Ground Slam does massive AoE and bleeds everything. Main downside is needing Ryslatha's Coil early.

📍 Check out how to set up the Bleed Slams Slayer Build

7. Righteous Fire Chieftain (Endgame Transition)

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Extremely strong for current meta farms like Breach and Abyss, one of the cheapest and best builds for those farms. Brain-dead playstyle. Progression is slower than Slams, which is why many players start Slams and transition to RF. Ignite Elementalist variants can be a better clear alternative if you want more speed and less tankiness.

📍 Check out how to set up the RF Chieftain Build

8. Poisonous Concoction of Bouncing Pathfinder

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Advanced setup for experienced players. Start Poison Concoction Pathfinder/Assassin for progression, then transition to Nightblade Viper Mamba with Binos of Kortul. Binos was buffed to 3m AoE, so you tap one monster in a Legion and the entire Legion dies. Binos is a Tier 0 unique (10-20 divines), so budget accordingly.

📍 Check out how to set up the Poison Concoction of Bouncing Pathfinder Build

9. Static Strike Slayer Assassin

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

One of the fastest builds for early four-stone progression. Uses snapshotting with war cries and ambush for massive damage. Best used as a transition-out starter where you clear early progression fast, then pivot to Cyclone Shockwave, Flicker, or something else with better endgame ceiling.

📍 Check out how to set up the Static Strike Slayer Build

10. Kinetic Blast of Clustering Necromancer / Hierophant

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Received about a 20% damage nerf, plus the AoE nerf hurts KB more than most builds. Necromancer offers better day-one progression while Hierophant has a higher ceiling. Archmage variant took the biggest hit due to the lightning mana cost increase. Still one of the best pure mapping builds in the game.

📍 Check out how to set up the Kinetic Blast of Clustering Necromancer Build

📍 Check out how to set up the Kinetic Blast of Clustering Hierophant Build

11. Lightning Arrow / Elemental Hit of the Spectrum Deadeye

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐☆☆☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Excellent for the current mapping-heavy meta. Elemental Hit got a 17% flat damage nerf and its AoE bug was fixed (halved effective AoE), but the impact is minimal for endgame gear. Very noob-friendly max-range playstyle. Struggles vs. Uber and Nightmare bosses, so this is firmly a mapping specialist.

📍 Check out how to set up the Lightning Arrow Deadeye Build

12. Reap Exsanguinate Miner Trickster

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Very fast build with excellent DPS. Mine supports received a small nerf but the build is completely viable. Runs hybrid ES with Ghost Dance, a bit squishy but kills things quickly. Excellent for Legion once you get gloves with extra chains.

📍 Check out how to set up the Reap Exsang Trickster Mines Build

13. Glacial Cascade of the Fissure Miner Elementalist

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

The gold-standard elementalist starter capable of 40/40 challenge completion in week one. Lost roughly 10% damage from mine support nerfs but gained an extra detonation area for noticeably better clear. Elementalist damage is so high you can invest heavily in defense (Aegis Aurora, block, armor stacking) making it far tankier than the archetype suggests.

📍 Check out how to set up the Glacial Cascade of the Fissure Miner Elementalist Build

14. Penance Brand Ignite Elementalist

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Weaker day one due to double-delayed damage (brand triggers, then ignite ticks), but scales into a pseudo-autobomber that clears screens with shield charge alone. Hall of the Ancients Ring (4-5 divines) transforms the build. Great pivot flexibility since Elementalist has many strong options.

📍 Check out how to set up the Penance Brand Ignite Elementalist Build

15. Cyclone Shockwave Slayer

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Fun and viable throughout progression. Slayer's ascendancy is very strong and the cyclone playstyle is intuitive for players coming from other ARPGs. Easily completes four-stone progression and functions as a well-rounded all-content build.

📍 Check out how to set up the Cyclone Shockwave Slayer Build

16. Venom Gyre / Claws Deadeye

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Dagger/claw stacking build focused on max zoom clear speed. A bit squishy with sub-4K HP relying on evasion and spell suppression. Claws variant has slightly better single-target than Lightning Arrow. Great for pure map blasting content.

📍 Check out how to set up the Venom Gyre Deadeye Build

17. Bleed Boneshatter Slayer

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Solid new-player-friendly melee build. Very tanky, easy to play, and comfortable four-stone progression. Great for players who like melee but don't want the pace of pure slams. Bleed explode on gloves this league adds extra pop.

📍 Check out how to set up the Bleed Boneshatter Slayer Build

18. Flicker Strike Slayer

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐☆☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐☆☆☆

You either love it or hate it. Requires setup for frenzy charges but scales to incredible clear speeds. Got quality-of-life buffs since Flicker's quality now gives extra chance to gain a frenzy charge on kill, plus new Legion-transferred enchants on chest armors help. Best treated as a transition build.

📍 Check out how to set up the Flicker Strike Slayer Build

19. Poison SRS Necromancer

  • Speed Leveling:⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Big buff this league since non-spectre minions no longer pause while attacking, giving SRS a significant DPS increase. Flexible with several poison minion setups (Holy Relic of Conviction, Animate Weapon of Ranged variants). Now hits harder and clears more smoothly with melee splash procs.

📍 Check out how to set up the Poison SRS Necromancer Build

20. Phys DoT Elementalist (Exsanguinate / Reap)

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Received a substantial 20-25% buff, one of the biggest DoT buffs this patch. Very fast auto-bomber play style once set up. Solid mechanical foundation with strong scaling. Fair warning: requires research into duration/loop setup, not for players who dislike complexity.

📍 Check out how to set up the Phys DoT Elementalist Build

21. Cold DoT Elementalist

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Nice buffs across the board. Winter Tide Brand received a 33% buff (biggest single DoT buff). Comfortable spellslinger setup allows one-button playstyle with 4 different cold DoT skills casting off attacks. Great transition build into Winter Orb.

22. Chaos DoT Occultist

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Blight of Contagion is most popular, but Essence Drain of Desperation Traps is a strong hipster alternative capable of T17s on modest budgets. Nothing crazy but more than enough for a starter with reliable damage.

23. Shock Nova of Procession Archmage

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐☆☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Notable nerfs this patch. Arcane Cloak nerfed, Archmage nerfed, plus lightning skills got +25% mana cost. The +cast speed buff doesn't fully compensate. Playable but B-tier. Consider Frostbolt of Ice Nova to bypass the mana problem.

24. Vaal Ice Nova (Ice Nova / Frostbolt Setup)

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Vaal Ice Nova was insanely buffed and Legion was reworked. This is now the fastest legion clear in the entire game. One button explodes the entire Legion via chain reaction, and it has two charges. You need to figure out your single-target shell (Frostbolt + Ice Nova overlaps, cast speed + spell echo, or Archmage). Setup complexity is real, but the ceiling is absurd.

25. Absolution Guardian / Necromancer

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Massive early game power, especially on Guardian. Brain-dead build where you smash through the atlas ignoring map mods. Perfect starter to transition into any minion build later (Holy Relic of Conviction, Soul Rest Phantasms, or Spectres). Highly recommended for new players over Righteous Fire.

26. Holy Relic of Conviction Necromancer

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Not a pure starter. You should league-start Absolution, then transition to Holy Relic once you get quality corruption and initial gear. Excellent all-around build that clears the atlas, does all bosses, all mods, all content without major weaknesses. Poison variant on Necromancer or Elemental on Guardian both work.

27. Soulwrest Phantasms

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

The most underrated S-tier starter this league. Super cheap since you just buy a Soulwrest, get sockets, and you're playing with a level 20 skill as soon as you hit maps. Extreme early power with no color requirements. Runs via Arcanist Brand or Cast on Channelling + Cyclone. Highly recommended for something spicy and off-meta.

28. Elemental Hit / Static Strike Slayer (Melee)

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Any Slayer strike skill is strong including Elemental Hit Melee, Smite, Lightning Strike, and Static Strike. Best used to power through early four-stones, then either scale up or transition. Elemental Hit Melee variant is still S-tier after minor nerfs.

29. Vaal Flame Blast / Armageddon Brand of Volatility Ignite Elementalist

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

The best pure Ignite shell for early game. Val Flame Blast on a four-link (with Valkar gloves for +5 to Val gems) blasts bosses to pieces. Armageddon Brand of Volatility got flat damage effectiveness buffs. Combined with Flame Surge as a machine-gun single-target skill, this shell has no dead spots.

30. Flame Surge of Combusting Ignite Elementalist

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Wildly underrated skill. Insane cast speed lets you machine-gun bosses after applying Armageddon Brand for the initial ignite. Far more fun and reactive than cremation/desecrate loops. Alternate quality version applies ignite for burning ground synergy. Best paired with the Flame Blast + Armageddon Brand shell above.

31. Lightning Conduit / Galvanic Field / Storm Brand Combo

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

An under-the-radar combo with huge potential. Storm Brand triggers Galvanic Field for clear, Lightning Conduit finishes single target. Galvanic Field received a massive damage buff (4,000+ top-end at level 20) and Lightning Conduit's multiplicative quality effect is huge. Multiple pivots available including totems, Crab Totems, ignite Galvanic, or Archmage shell.

32. Blade Blast / Blade Blast of Unloading

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Got significant AoE buffs plus quality bonuses via socket color changes, allowing much more overlap and multiplied damage. Multiple setups possible: Custom Crit, Cast on Channelling, Trigger Bots, or poison variant. High skill ceiling with strong early payoff, but requires research to find the right setup.

33. Viper Strike / Viper Strike of the Mamba

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Solid A-tier starter with a slower early clear due to poison ramp. Scales exceptionally well once you get cluster jewels with Low Tolerance (four medium clusters equals massive DPS jump). Excellent transition into any poison playstyle with proliferation.

34. Manaman Spell Caster

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐☆☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Still a very strong caster after the patch. Buffs and nerfs cancelled out, leaving DPS roughly the same as last league. Extremely powerful mid-to-late game with 20-30+ divines invested, but has real day-one clunkiness compared to other starters.

35. General's Cry Slayer/Champion

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Overall a strong build but heavily underplayed. Pseudo-minion playstyle where you summon corpse warriors that mimic your melee skills. Best used as a pure boss rusher, not ideal for Breach or Legion. Decent for Essence and Uber boss farming.

36. Scorching Ray of Immolation Totems Hierophant

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Excellent single-target boss killer via totems. Pairs perfectly with Righteous Fire, where RF handles clear while Scorching Ray Totems delete bosses. Cast speed dictates turn rate for smooth tracking. A much better single-target choice for RF Chieftains than Fire Trap.

37. Wave of Conviction of Trarthus Miner

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

A-tier bosser depending on gem availability (dropped from mercenaries). Huge single-target damage, but worse clear than Glacial Cascade or Exsanguinate Miners. Play this if you specifically want a bossing miner over the all-rounder options.

38. Frostblink of Wintry Blast Miner

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐☆☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐☆☆☆

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Very clunky compared to other miners. Can be a specialist ZHP bosser with good AoE for double-hits, but Glacial Cascade / Exsanguinate / Walcot are better all-content options. B-tier at best, so don't get baited.

39. Toxic Rain Pathfinder (Heist Specialist)

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐☆☆☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Not a general starter. This is a specialist Heist build. Extremely fast, best-in-slot for Heist and Grand Heist. Potentially the meta pick for the new underwater Heist mechanic. Only play this if you plan to farm Heist heavily.

40. Shockwave Totems Chieftain (Sanctum Specialist)

  • Speed Leveling: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Endgame: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Farming: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Mapping: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Bossing: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

  • Easy to Play: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

The go-to Sanctum farming build for years. Not a general starter, but Sanctum has extra value this league as the only source of Volatile Valve Orbs.

⚠️ Bait Builds to Avoid as Starters

Ethereal Knives (EK): Fantastic endgame build (arguably one of the best), but weak as a starter. Simple "cast once" spells don't scale well with basic levels/gear. Transition into it, don't start it.

Spark / Freezing Pulse: Same trap. Weak day-one, requires heavy currency investment before feeling good. Bosses will be miserable.

Fireball / Val Fireball: Buffed but still mechanically outclassed by Penance Brand, Galvanic Field, and Flame Blast for ignite. Fireball Mines is genuinely one of the worst starter ideas.

PoE 3.29 Best SSF Builds for League Starter & Endgame

Solo Self-Found in 3.29 benefits enormously from the removal of colored socket requirements, the new all-flame-style crafting that lets you split any craft into multiple ghostly outcomes and pick your favorite, the tightening of Abyss jewels back to Abyss only, and the Legion enshroud crystals that let you gamble a modifier from any unique onto a new random unique of the same type. Ducats can now swap attributes on items, making SSF attribute stacking realistic. Every build below was picked because it either self-sustains through common drops, uses cheap or chanceable uniques, or has a smooth crafting-first path to endgame without needing trade.

1. Boneshatter Hydrosphere Berserker

This is arguably the strongest SSF league starter in 3.29 because every unique required is either heist-farmable or a common tier-three drop through Breach's Ancient Womb gifts. The build abuses 4x damage scaling by cycling two Hydrospheres linked to Battle Mage's Cry, so every strike hits both the enemy and the sphere with melee splash for guaranteed double damage. The 3.28j leap slam fix removed the old positional jank, meaning you can now stand directly on top of a boss and still trigger the double hit consistently. Endgame numbers push 20 million DPS, a 100k elemental max hit, a 30k physical max hit, and roughly 2,000 leech per second (4,000 with Divine Shield). Berserker's Warbringer gives you permanent Battle Mage's Cry uptime and roughly 80% attack speed from ascendancy alone, letting you wield a slow, hard-hitting Vaal Axe instead of a Despot Axe. The progression path is beautifully SSF-friendly: swap from Sunder to Boneshatter at second lab, run Petrified Blood low-life for over-leech and doubled recovery until you drop a Soul Tether (Replica from Heist or normal from Breach Ancient Womb), then transition to the Delirious Bloodline endgame setup. Gem quality changes give every war cry +25% cooldown recovery for free, and Complex Trauma at 30 quality scales damage per stack even harder. If you're mechanically confident enough to maintain trauma uptime, this is a top-five SSF starter.

2. Luminary Life & Light Stack Scion (Aura Bot with Permanent Merc)

The new Luminary ascendancy on Scion is tailor-made for SSF because you become the aura bot and your permanent Mercenary becomes the damage dealer, meaning your gear only needs to stack life and aura effect while the merc scales damage through Flame Link. Noble Blood locks in a permanent merc as your first ascendancy point, Oath of Loyalty grants permanent Flame Link (available on Scion in Act 4), and Golden Glory scales light radius, which directly translates into link efficiency for the enormous fire damage transfer. The build converts every point of your life into flat fire damage for the merc via Flame Link, then multiplies it through Golden Glory's link effect. Level as Sunder Scion through the Havoc/Mathil campaign guide, gamble two-handers early so any extras go to your merc, then respec into aura bot around white or yellow maps once Sunder falls off. Run a Kinetic Blast Sceptre merc for clear and a Molten Strike merc for bossing. Cheap gear priorities are Hands of the Frigidone (mandatory, guarantees aura effect regardless of merc distance), dual Nycta's Lanterns for 50% increased light radius each, Amethyst Embrace ring farmed from Incarnation of Fear for fire pen through overcap, and Untouched Soul amulet from ritual which now gives 12 res per default-white socket (all sockets are now white by default in 3.29). Farming route is heavy Betrayal-Ritual-Breach with Leo in Fortification for corrupted uniques and Janus in Research for cathedral uniques. Kaom's Heart is the target chest for the life-stacking endgame.

3. Spark Archmage Hierophant

Even without trade, this build is one of the tankiest SSF map blasters with 75/75 block, an enormous effective hit pool, and enough clear DPS to blast Toxic Sewers, Abyss, Ritual, and Ultimatum. The reason it works in SSF is that Katava's Thirst is a relatively common helmet drop, and the Legion enshroud mechanic gives you a fun long-term goal where you can potentially transfer the Katava's Thirst spell trigger onto a Mind Spiral for extra mana and ES, or onto a Ravenous Passion for rage-based spell damage. Because enshrouding costs relatively little and unique helmets pile up in SSF, you'll naturally accumulate the material to gamble for this upgrade over the course of the league. Spark of the Nova lost one net projectile after quality math, but the new Pact of Bad exceptional gem grants six additional projectiles in a circle plus 35% more damage on the next eight spell casts, which more than compensates. Fireball got a base mana reduction and effectiveness buff, and Firestorm gained added damage effectiveness, meaning your leveling process is smoother than ever. Level with Ball Lightning of Orbiting into Fireball into Firestorm, then transition to Spark of the Nova and Archmage once mana scaling comes online. Arcane Cloak dropped to a flat 10% and Archmage lost about 2% damage per mana, both minor.

4. Winter Orb Elementalist

Winter Orb now fires three projectiles at level 20 without any multi-projectile support, which is enormous for SSF because you skip the entire GMP/LMP acquisition problem. Base crit chance also went up, so crit capping happens naturally. Elementalist provides Shaper of Storms for a ~50% more damage multiplier through shock, Mastermind of Discord for another 20-25% more via cold exposure, and four golems from Liege of the Primordial that grant speed, crit, damage, and life regen simultaneously. Reaches roughly 2 million DPS on almost entirely self-found rare gear with a couple of cheap uniques like Light of Lunaris and Doedre's Damning for capped block and dual curses. Reaches 70% attack block and 66% spell block through Arcane Guarding, Aggressive Bastions, and shield masteries, with Shaper of Flames converting 40% physical to fire for a big physical damage reduction boost. Level as slam or spell caster until Winter Orb unlocks at 28, swap after first lab at 34, second lab at 55 grants Shaper of Storms. Freed support slots mean you actually run real damage gems from the start.

5. Explosive Arrow Ballista Champion (Direct Hit)

This build is SSF gold because Quill Rain and Skirmish quiver both drop or chance easily during the campaign, and the direct hit scaling path saves passive points that go into defenses instead of expensive damage-over-time multipliers. Ancestral Bond enables totem-only damage on the budget setup so you don't need any specific weapon rolls to function. You'll hit around 70% evade, lucky spell suppression for 90%+ effective suppression, capped resistances, and comfortable physical damage reduction on a four-to-five-link with items that would cost pennies on trade. It can complete Gruelling Gauntlet ultimatums and Five Ways, which almost no other league starter can claim. The new socket color changes are a massive quality-of-life win here since Ballista setups historically wanted very specific colors. Full progression POB covers campaign, four-link into yellow, five-link for early red, six-link into T16 comfort, then Wilma's Requital and Breachstalker gloves for the fully juiced endgame scaling.

6. Icicle Mines Deadeye

Max Acrobatics dodge stacking with 50%-value spell suppression is a great SSF avoidance layer because it doesn't require any specific unique items to reach the breakpoints. You're not getting hit at all when it's fully allocated, which means gear priority shifts to raw damage rather than defensive band-aids. Icicle Mines chain projectile scaling handles clear and single target simultaneously, and the mine playstyle is quite different from the totem and Hierophant meta if you want variety. The build transitions mid-game into a Shroud life-stacking setup for scaling recovery, which is achievable through farmed drops rather than expensive purchases. Multiple POB variants exist for leveling, T16 early, and full endgame progression. A refreshing pick for SSF players who want to avoid the standard totem/Hierophant/minion starters.

7. Wintertide Brand Cold DoT Elementalist

Cold DoT completely bypasses accuracy concerns, meaning your leveling doesn't rely on finding a decent weapon roll early. Wintertide Brand plus Cold Snap is a two-skill setup that carries from Act 2 through endgame, with the new Pact of War support gem providing 40% more damage plus a 25% increased damage-over-time debuff on bosses - an enormous fix to the build's historical single-target weakness. Elementalist stacks four golems, Shaper of Storms for shock, and Mastermind of Discord for cold exposure. Ram Gaze is a cheap early helmet that grants 50% cold-over-time multi and drops relatively frequently. Replica Alpha's Howl is available through blueprint Heist runs in SSF. Doedre's Damning enables an additional curse. Late-game low-life swap using The Dark Monarch roughly triples both damage and tankiness. Level with Rolling Magma from 1-12 (nerfed but still viable for that short window), then swap to Wintertide Brand and Creeping Frost after Merveil, adding Cold Snap after Fidelitas.

8. Ice Crash Ignite Chieftain

The socket color removal in 3.29 makes the Covenant chestpiece (which acts as a 90% more damage multiplier for ignites) trivial to slot compared to previous leagues where six off-colors were a nightmare in SSF. Falbor'd Ynda Dawn belt grants "all damage can ignite" and is a common Breach hive gamble target, and Razor of the Seven Suns Nightmare Blade is farmable through Uber Elder. Ice Crash carries 631% base damage effectiveness with 15% quality as extra damage, and Chieftain provides Tukohama War Herald's Fist of War for 90% more damage on top of stacked max resistances through Valako and Tasalio. Endgame POB shows around 22 million DPS baseline, ~26 million with Smite, and roughly 74 million total damage on ignite with tincture uptime. Level as Berserker with Sunder through Rite of Ruin and Warbringer until about 75, then grab the Falbor'd belt and transition to the ignite setup. Rebuke of the Val works as a placeholder before Razor drops. The new infamous helmet mod for ash-on-warcry provides 100% uptime on single target, another cheap crafting target for SSF.

9. Earthshatter Berserker

Zero unique dependency makes this one of the safest SSF starters in the game - it functions entirely off warcry-based scaling that requires no specific drops to come online. The auto-exertion setup with warcries triggering as you Earthshatter provides automated 20 million damage per exploding shard at endgame. The new crafting mechanic (splitting a craft into ghostly copies) makes rolling a solid axe trivial: tyrannical plus flaring smashed together produces a great weapon quickly, which is the main damage catalyst for the build. Standard slam leveling with warcry exertion works through the campaign with a four-link viable through T5-T8 on day one. Many players hit T16 in around four hours with this build. Optional Juggernaut variant sacrifices some damage for a tankier delve-oriented profile. Only Forbidden Flesh/Flame jewels are gated behind trade-tier acquisition, and even those aren't required to complete all content.

10. Poisonous Concoction of Bouncing Pathfinder

PConk is a perennial SSF starter because it uses zero required uniques - flask-based scaling and Pathfinder ascendancy carry everything you need. Level with Caustic Arrow, transition to Poisonous Concoction with Herald of Agony once the gem is available in Act 3, then swap to the Bouncing transfigured version after a few Uber Lab runs (or skip if you don't get lucky). The quality-per-matching-socket-color buff in 3.29 gives free power to what was already a top starter. Explode proliferation tech scales into full endgame mapping strategies. Extremely reliable single-target-to-clear ratio, one of the smoothest campaign progressions in the game, and completely resilient to bad drop luck since the build genuinely doesn't need any specific item to function.

11. Poison Reaper of Revenants Necromancer

This is a pseudo starter because Reaper of Revenants is a transfigured gem, and in SSF that means you need to actually farm the transfigured version through Uber Lab enchant rerolls or gem swap outcomes. The recommended approach is to level with the SRS Necromancer starter (fully guided handholdy campaign POB) and swap into Reapers once you hit maps and secure the transfigured gem. What you get is 78% attack block, 80% spell block (conditional on the block mastery plus 8% spell block on shield), Deflection generating five endurance charges through block for near-permanent uptime, and roughly 34 million DPS with Vaal Haste active on level 32 Reapers. Fortress socketed inside large clusters transforms 20% increased damage taken into a 50% flat damage reduction for minions - a massive survivability upgrade that's the entire reason this build handles giga-juiced content. The socket color removal effectively deletes the Skin of the Lords price barrier that historically gatekept this build in SSF. Anathema-enabled dual curse via Replica Dragonfang's Flight requires an Enlightened (level 3-4 preferable) - if you can't source one, the single-curse variant drops Enlightened entirely and life-taps everything. For juiced Alva temple content, swap Minion Damage support for Void Manipulation, trading about a million DPS for a jump from 35k to 47k minion life which keeps your Reapers alive where it actually matters.

12. Dual Strike of Ambidexterity Slayer

Melee builds struggle in SSF because they typically need specific weapons, but this one levels with Frost Blades through the entire campaign so you don't need any early weapon rolls to function. Versatile Combatant grants spell block equal to attack block once attack block is capped, providing an SSF-friendly path to hybrid block without needing shield uniques. Slayer's overleech and cull provide the sustain and damage baseline that carries campaign through yellow maps on nothing but rare weapon drops. No Dual Strike nerfs appeared in the patch notes, and the socket color changes make the required off-color setups completely painless in 3.29. Approachable damage profile that scales cleanly with any better weapon you drop or craft, making it one of the most forgiving melee options for SSF where you can't just buy an upgrade weapon on demand.

PoE 3.29 Ascendancy Class Tier List

With the new ascendancy added and old ones reworked, the class meta situation has changed this patch significantly. The Luminary is the newest addition, and older classes like Assassin, Occultist, and Inquisitor received reworks that push them up the rankings. Below is our early PoE 3.29 class tier list based on the patch notes:

S Tier - League-Defining Picks

  • Luminary (Scion, new): The mercenary-focused Ascendancy that will likely dominate half the league. Permanent Trarthusian mercs, infinite-duration link skills, and access to Hallowed Monarch make this an aura-bot that carries godlike merc, damage dealers.

  • Reliquarian (Scion): The rotating unique-mimicking Ascendancy is having its best league in memory. Dawnbreaker enables fully converted cold and lightning to fire (stacking with the actual Dawnbreaker unique and Tempered by War for near 95% conversion), Arakaali's Fang grants 15% poison damage and 2% attack speed per active spider up to 20 stacks (40 with Dark Monarch, for 600% poison damage and 80% attack speed), Melding of the Flesh loses its normal -70/-80 all res downside, and Black Cane grants massive flat physical damage to spells per Summon Phantasm. Elusive Lar, Zerphi's Crank, and Sacred Chalice round out one of the most flexible and powerful Ascendancy pools of any class this patch.

  • Elementalist: Still king for ignite scaling. Ethereal Knives of Massacre ignite, Fireball ignite, and Firestorm ignite all got direct buffs. Mastermind of Discord + Shaper of Flames remains one of the strongest damage stacks in the game.

  • Trickster: Consistently top tier for DoT and mine archetypes. Exsanguinate mines, Impending Doom, and Essence Drain of Wickedness all benefit here.

  • Slayer: Head Hunter carrier builds like EK Massacre Charlatan remain S tier for pure blast-clear power.

A Tier - Strong and Flexible

  • Inquisitor: Received the new Instruments of Justice notable, which grants spell crit chance equal to your main hand weapon's crit. Battle Mage Cast on Crit is back on the menu, and Bifurcate crit interactions are strong.

  • Occultist: The new Unhallowed Rite node fuels channelling spellcasters with faster ES recharge, more damage, and spirit infusion stacks. Perfect for Incinerate and Lightning Tendrils of Escalation.

  • Assassin: New Verification node adds Bifurcate crit rolls, Mystic Infusion was reworked, and Deathmarked now grants instant leech and mark effect scaling. Assassin play rate should climb this league.

  • Necromancer: Skeletons and SRS both benefit from the "minions no longer pause while attacking" change. Animate Weapon of Ranged Arms is a strong pick too.

  • Hierofant: Small nerf to totem more-damage-per-totem (3% from 5%), but Flame Wall totems and quality-stacked totem builds barely feel it.

B Tier - Solid but Situational

  • Chieftain: RF, Ignite Slams, and Hinekora explode builds remain playable. Life stacking took a hit due to Wrath Path being nerfed from 5% to 3%.

  • Champion: Reliable defensive frame. Falls short of the meta damage ceilings but a safe pick.

  • Deadeye: Winter Orb (now 2-3 base projectiles) and Kinetic Blast benefit here, though KB Fusillade got nerfed hard on the totem front.

  • Berserker: Great for melee slam builds. Earth Shatter and Ice Crash play fine, but overshadowed by ranged options.

  • Juggernaut: Buffed Tide Breaker interaction could open Brine Charge builds, otherwise a defensive filler.

C Tier - Underperformers

  • Raider: Received no meaningful buffs. Frenzy scaling is fine, but nothing pushes it up.

  • Guardian: Still auras-only. Playable in party farming but weak solo.

  • Saboteur: Kinetic Fusillade nerfs and mine damage reductions hurt. Blade Blast of Unloading Sabo is the one shining exception.

  • Pathfinder: Loses more than it gains. Poison is still viable but the class hasn't kept pace.

  • Gladiator: Block shield builds benefit from block-on-staves crafts, but the class lacks damage scaling versus its peers.
