Purified Essences are important items in Diablo 4 Season 11, they're key to unlocking a hidden boss fight and valuable rewards you can't get anywhere else. This guide breaks down everything you need to know: types of D4 Purified Essences, where to find them, which altars to use them on, and what happens when you finish the full set.
How to Get and Use Purified Essences in Diablo 4 Season 11
Purified Essences are rare seasonal items tied to the Lesser Evils in Diablo IV. They’re special versions of the Corrupted Essences you get from defeating powerful bosses, but they’re harder to find and serve a specific purpose. Unlike Corrupted Essences, Purified Essences can’t be sold or salvaged, they’re meant to be offered at hidden altars across Sanctuary. Here are the four types you’ll encounter:
Purified Claw of Andariel
Purified Eye of Belial
Purified Horn of Duriel
Purified Tongue of Azmodan
D4 Purified Essences Drop Bosses & Locations (Season 11)
Each Purified Essence comes from a specific Lesser Evil, and you’ll need to hunt these bosses in their designated locations. They are extremely rare random drops—you will not get them every time you defeat a boss, and you may need to farm the same boss repeatedly to get the purified version instead of the regular corrupted one.
1. Andariel Spawns in Kurast Undercity (Drops Purified Claw of Andariel)
You can spawn her guaranteed by using Minor Tribute of Andariel, or she may randomly replace the normal boss in The Kurast Undercity during runs. Note that the Purified Claw only drops as a rare alternative to the Corrupted Claw. A key tip is to complete the seasonal quest with Hadriel using your first Corrupted Claw of Andariel—this unlocks the Divine Gift slot for Andariel, and subsequent runs have a small chance to drop the Purified version instead of the corrupted one. Many players confirm farming The Undercity repeatedly is the only reliable way to get this essence.
2. Belial Spawns in The Pit (Drops Purified Eye of Belial)
He does not spawn every run—instead, he has a chance to replace the regular final boss of The Pit. Like Andariel’s essence, the Purified Eye of Belial is a rare drop that replaces the Corrupted Eye in some runs. Farm The Pit consistently, and prioritize runs where Belial is the final boss to boost your chances. No special summoning items are required—just keep clearing The Pit until the Purified Eye drops.
3. Duriel During Helltide Events (Drops Purified Horn of Duriel)
To maximize your chances of getting the Purified Horn of Duriel, contribute at least one Abomination Heart to summon Duriel—players report higher drop rates when they actively participate in summoning him, rather than just joining the fight late. Duriel’s Purified Horn is a rare alternative to his Corrupted Horn, so you will need to farm multiple Helltide events to get it. If you struggle to find the drop, focus on Helltide runs where you help summon Duriel each time.
4. Azmodan During World Boss Events (Drops Purified Tongue of Azmodan)
You do not need to be the one summoning Azmodan to get the drop—any player who participates in defeating him has a chance to get the Purified Tongue. Like other Purified Essences, this item is a rare alternative to the Corrupted Tongue of Azmodan, so you may need to join multiple Azmodan World Boss events before it drops.
All four Purified Essences (Claw of Andariel, Eye of Belial, Horn of Duriel, Tongue of Azmodan) can also drop from the Infernal Hordes Boss—this is an additional way to farm all types of Purified Essences if you struggle with the specific Lesser Evil fights.
Note:
You cannot purify corrupted essences manually—Purified Essences are rare, random drops that replace corrupted ones in boss loot tables.
Unlock Divine Gift slots for each Lesser Evil first by turning in your first Corrupted Essence of each type to Hadriel via the seasonal quest—this step is required to enable Purified Essence drops for that boss.
Drop rates for Purified Essences are very low, similar to mythic items, consistent farming is the only way to get them. For Duriel specifically, always contribute to summoning him to raise your drop chance.
Where and How to Use Diablo 4 Purified Essences in Season 11?
Once you have a Purified Essence, you need to take it to its matching altar. Each altar is hidden in a specific region of Sanctuary, and interacting with the altar while holding the correct essence will offer it—you’ll see the altar light up, and the essence will leave your inventory. You can do this in any order, but you need to offer all four to trigger the final event. Here are the altar locations and which purified essence they use:
Altar of Anguish (Uses Purified Claw of Andariel): Found in Nahantu (Seven Stones region). Look for it on the western edge of Nahantu, between the Chakhir Stronghold and the entrance to the Harbinger of Hatred boss fight.
Altar of Lies (Uses Purified Eye of Belial): Located in Fractured Peaks (Seat of the Heavens region). It’s on the eastern edge of Fractured Peaks, near the Zenith dungeon entrance—look east of the Bear Tribe Refuge waypoint.
Altar of Pain (Uses Purified Horn of Duriel): Situated in Kehjistan, close to the ruins of Caldeum. Head south of Caldeum’s city ruins, and you’ll find the altar in the surrounding area.
Altar of Sin (Uses Purified Tongue of Azmodan): In Hawezar (Umir Plateau region). It sits on a small rise between the Zarbinzet waypoint and the Ruins of Rakhat Keep waypoint.
To use an essence: Travel to the altar’s location, open your inventory to confirm you have the matching Purified Essence, and click on the altar. The altar will activate with a visual cue (like flames), and the essence will be consumed. No immediate reward comes from a single offering—this is part of a bigger sequence.
What Happens When You Use All Purified Essences?
After offering all four Purified Essences to their respective altars, a portal will spawn at the last altar you used. Step through this portal to enter a hidden arena—this is where you’ll face a boss rush against all four Lesser Evils. The fight happens in pairs: first, you’ll battle Andariel and Belial together, then Duriel and Azmodan. The bosses hit hard, so make sure your build is strong (a powerful seasonal build, like Crackling Energy, works well here) before entering. Once you defeat all four Lesser Evils, a large chest spawns in the middle of the arena. This chest is packed with valuable loot.
1 Resplendent Spark
1 Tribute of Ascendance
20+ Ancestral Uniques
Several Runes
Various Corrupted Essences
Shield Crest of Exile
Some players also report getting extra Mythic items from this chest, though mythic items are more commonly found in Nightmare Dungeons with the Mythic Prankster affix. Regardless, the loot from the final chest is worth the effort—you’ll get rare and powerful gear that can significantly improve your character. The boss rush event is not time-gated, and you can repeat it if you can get another set of Purified Essences (though their rare drop rate means repeating may take time). There’s no limit to how many times you can complete the event, so you can farm the chest for more Ancestral Uniques or Resplendent Sparks if needed.
