Diablo 4 S16 War Plans: Tactics, Respec, Tyrael's Boons Skill Tree Build (3.3)

Season 16 of Diablo 4 brings one of the largest expansions to the War Plans system since its introduction. With the 3.3.0 PTR arriving on October 27, 2026, players finally get hands-on time with two brand new progression trees, a fresh currency, and a season-themed layer called Tyrael's Boons. This guide walks through everything you need to know about customizing War Plans, respeccing with Marks of Wisdom, and building out the Tyrael's Boons skill tree in Season 16.

Diablo 4 Season 16 War Plans Guide (3.3 PTR)

The 3.3.0 Public Test Realm for Season 16 runs from October 27, 10:00 a.m. PDT to November 3, 10:00 a.m. PST on PC Battle.net, giving players a window to test new features before the season officially drops. Blizzard has confirmed that the team is focusing the PTR on new content rather than returning features from Season of Hell's Legacy, though several favorites from that season will carry forward into Season 16. The headline additions include reworked Infernal Hordes, Pit, and Lair Boss activities, new Horadric Items that create synergies with the Talisman system, and a dual boss encounter where the Fractured Reaper joins forces with the Corrupted Reaper from Season of Death Awakening.

Main Changes To War Plans in Season 16

The War Plans system receives the biggest overhaul of the patch. Here are the main changes coming to War Plans in Season 16:

  • A new meta progression tree called War Plans Tactics that lets you influence which activities and rewards appear.

  • A new currency called Marks of Wisdom that replaces gold for respeccing War Plans nodes.

  • A brand new seasonal tree called Tyrael's Boons with up to 132 points to spend across four paths.

  • Full access to Tyrael's Boons for all Seasonal players, with no need to own the Lord of Hatred expansion.

  • Account-wide War Plans progression that works across both Eternal and Seasonal Realms.

With that overview out of the way, the next sections cover each major change in detail, starting with how you shape your War Plans using the new Tactics tree.

How To Customize Your War Plans with Tactics?

War Plans Tactics is the new meta progression system that lets you adjust the odds of receiving the content and rewards you actually want. Instead of accepting whatever five activities get rolled, you earn points by completing War Plans and invest them into nodes that bias the system in your favor. The tree is available for both Seasonal and Eternal content, so time spent here carries weight regardless of which realm you prefer.

Spending Points on Activity Nodes

You can place up to 3 points into any War Plan Activity node to raise the chance that type of activity appears in your offered War Plans. The more points invested, the higher the appearance rate relative to other activity types. Allocating at least 1 point into either Helltides or Nightmare Dungeons also opens an additional choice, letting you boost the chances of Greater Helltides or Escalation Dungeons showing up instead of the standard versions.

Spending Points on Reward Nodes

You can also assign up to 3 points into any Reward node to shift what War Plans tend to pay out. The reward categories available in Season 16 include:

  • Armor

  • Weapons

  • Jewelry

  • Obducite

  • Salvage

  • Gems

  • Gold

  • Activity Keys

  • Horadric Cube Materials

  • Talisman Items

If you want to target farm jewelry for a specific Talisman set bonus, or stack Obducite to feed Masterworking, this is the system that lets you push the game in that direction. Since points are not permanent, you can always refund and reinvest, which brings us to the second new system: Marks of Wisdom.

How To Respec War Plans With Marks of Wisdom?

Gold is no longer the respec currency for War Plans. In Season 16, every completed War Plan you turn in rewards a new currency called Marks of Wisdom, and this is what you spend to move points around in both the War Plans Tactics tree and the individual Activity trees.

How Marks of Wisdom Work

Marks of Wisdom drop as a reward whenever you hand in a finished War Plan. You then spend them to swap out nodes in either tree, which gives you flexibility to pivot your farming strategy whenever your goals change during the season. For example, you might start the season chasing Obducite for Masterworking, then shift toward Talisman Items once your gear is close to finished.

The PTR Cap on Marks of Wisdom

During the 3.3.0 PTR, Marks of Wisdom are capped at 20. The cap means you cannot infinitely respec the way you eventually could with gold late in a season. This appears to be a deliberate design choice meant to encourage commitment to a farming direction rather than constant node swapping. If you unlock and max War Plans through the PTR boost vendor Mrak, you will also receive 20 Marks of Wisdom and 3 Marks of El'druin to test the system right away.

With the Tactics tree and respec currency covered, the last big piece is the season-specific tree that sits alongside them.

How To Build Tyrael's Boons War Plans Skill Tree?

Starting in Season 16, every seasonal character gets access to a dedicated season-themed War Plans tree called Tyrael's Boons. Owning the Lord of Hatred expansion is not required, so all Seasonal players can use it. The tree does not replace Seasonal Blessings; those will become a static system offering the same five Blessings each season, and Tyrael's Boons sits on top of that foundation as a personalized layer.

How Many Points You Can Earn

You can earn up to 132 points across the Tyrael's Boons tree in Season 16. That amount is enough to select up to 4 of the 6 available selections within the four available paths, so planning your path investment matters. You can unassign points at a cost of 5,000,000 gold per point, which uses gold rather than Marks of Wisdom.

The Four Paths in Season 16

The Tyrael's Boons tree branches into four distinct paths, each focused on a different type of farming goal.

  • Curious Addition modifies the Purveyor of Curiosities. This path increases the chance of receiving a second item per gamble and offers either new item types or improved odds for higher-quality items. One optional branch makes the Purveyor far more expensive but raises the likelihood of rolling Ancestral items, which is useful if you want targeted gambling for upgrades.

  • Merchant of Mystery adds a brand new merchant at Torment difficulty that sells caches for Forgotten Souls. Investing points raises the chance of Ancestral Caches appearing. You can also select a sub-path to buy caches with Runes or Gems, or push the amount and quality of Ancestral Caches on offer instead.

  • Scent of Gold increases the amount of gold and experience you earn. One branch adds more Horadric Cube materials and Gem Fragments to your drops, while the other improves monster drops of gold and gems directly. There is also a node that raises your chance of finding a Legendary item, which pairs well with general farming routes like Helltides.

  • Trash for Treasure reduces transmuting costs at the Alchemist and gives you a better chance at Forgotten Souls. The first sub-path grants more Obducite and Scrolls of Restoration, while the other gives monsters a chance to drop additional Obducite and Salvage. At the end of this path, salvaging Ancestral Items has a chance to grant a Scroll of Restoration. This path also opens a new Horadric Cube recipe called Greater Temper, which upgrades the Tempered Affix on an item to a Greater Affix for the cost of 30 Scrolls of Restoration and 1,000 Obducite. That recipe alone makes Trash for Treasure one of the most appealing paths for players chasing perfect gear.

Suggested Path Priorities

Since you can only fully commit to a handful of selections, consider your goals before spending points. If you push leaderboards and need Greater Affixes on tempered stats, Trash for Treasure is the obvious pick. If you want to roll endless gambling attempts for Ancestrals, Curious Addition pairs well with Merchant of Mystery. For solo self-found players or anyone leveling fresh, Scent of Gold offers broad economic benefits that smooth the entire season.

Season 16 reshapes how you approach the endgame grind, and the expanded War Plans system is at the heart of that shift. Between the Tactics tree, Marks of Wisdom respecs, and the four Tyrael's Boons paths, you have far more control over your farming direction than any previous season allowed. Hop onto the PTR between October 27 and November 3 to try the systems yourself, send feedback through the official forums, and get ready for the full launch of Season 16.
