Picking the right class in MapleStory Classic World can feel overwhelming with so many branches, play styles, and third job paths to consider. In this MapleStory Classic World Tier List, we walk through every class across all three job stages, plus dedicated rankings for solo play, mobbing, training, and bossing. By the time you finish reading, you should have a clear idea of which character fits your style and your wallet.
MapleStory Classic World Tier List
MapleStory Classic World launches without third job content, so most players will spend a very long time grinding through first and second job before advancement is even an option. Based on the second closed online test, first and second job skills are not expected to change much at launch, while third job will likely be reworked when it eventually drops. The core identity of every class should stay intact though.
Balance in the game is brutal. Mesos are hard to come by in the early game, potions are expensive, and quest EXP is pretty bad. That means mobility, mobbing ability, and survivability matter more than raw damage numbers for most players. With that context in mind, let's get into the rankings.
MapleStory Classic Best Class Tier List (1st Job Class)
First job sets the tone for your early grinding. All first job classes rely on a handful of basic skills, so this ranking also considers which second and third job paths each starting class leads into.
1. Magician (S Tier)
Magicians get Magic Guard right away, which routes damage to MP instead of HP. Combined with a huge MP pool, this makes them far less fragile than their stat sheet suggests. They advance into Fire Poison Wizard, Ice Lightning Wizard, or Cleric at second job, all of which have strong third job payoffs. Ice Lightning Mage and Fire Poison Mage are both top tier endgame picks, while Priest struggles a bit more.
2. Thief (A Tier)
Thieves start with Lucky Seven (claws) or Double Stab (daggers), plus Dark Sight for invisibility and Disorder for debuffs. Dark Sight alone is absurd at third job because monsters completely drop aggro. Thieves branch into Assassin leading to Hermit, or Bandit leading to Chief Bandit. Both end paths are great, with Hermit offering pure DPS and Chief Bandit bringing wild utility.
3. Warrior (A Tier)
Warriors get Power Strike for single target and Slash Blast for up to four mobs. They have big HP and defense pools but slow movement. The three branches lead to Crusader, White Knight, or Dragon Knight at third job. Dragon Knight is an S tier endgame class, while Crusader and White Knight sit comfortably in B tier.
4. Archer (B Tier)
Archers choose between Arrow Blow (single target) or Double Shot (two targets), and get Power Knockback to push mobs away. They are squishy, need ammo, and cannot jump attack. The payoff is huge though, since Hunter leads to Ranger (S tier) and Crossbowman leads to Sniper (B tier). The journey to third job is rough, but the destination is excellent.
MapleStory Classic Best 2nd Job Tier List
Since Classic World launches without third job, second job is where most players will live for a long time. This ranking is based on second closed online test balance and focuses on farming efficiency.
1. Fighter (S Tier)
Fighters are a sleeper powerhouse. Axe Mastery applies a bleed effect dealing 100% additional damage over three seconds. Final Attack is now a mobbing skill hitting three enemies for 140% damage at max level, and procs 50% of the time for free. Add Rush for mobility and Rage for a 40 attack power party buff, and this class dominates groups of mobs.
2. Ice Lightning Wizard (S Tier)
Thunderbolt hits six monsters, which is the highest mob count of any second job skill. Head to Florina Beach around level 40 and farm Lorangs for insane EXP thanks to elemental advantage. The class is weak until Thunder is leveled, but once it is, you train quickly. Thunder also has a chance to stun now that full freeze is gone.
3. Cleric (A+ Tier)
Clerics farm mesos better than almost anyone thanks to self-healing with Heal, Invincible for physical damage reduction, and low potion costs. Holy Arrow handles both single target and small groups, chaining to additional enemies if you one shot the first mob. Many monsters are weak to holy, giving a 1.25x damage bonus on plenty of maps. Teleport also gives top tier mobility.
4. Fire Poison Wizard (A+ Tier)
Fire Arrow is a strong single target skill with burn damage over time, and plenty of monsters are weak to fire. Poison Breath handles mobbing, though poison itself has limited elemental advantage (only fairies are weak to it). Teleport mobility and solid fire grinding keep this class above pure A tier picks.
5. Hunter (A Tier)
Hunters get Arrow Bomb for AoE with a chance to stun, Soul Arrow to skip the ammo tax, and Amazon's Judgment to slow enemies on crits. Final Attack hits three times and can even hit separate monsters. The weakness is zero movement skill, so you spam Power Knockback a lot. Safe, ranged, and performs well across many maps.
6. Crossbowman (A Tier)
Crossbowmen trade Hunter's stun for higher damage. Iron Arrow pierces up to four monsters in a line for 180% damage, though damage decreases with each hit. The mastery gives a 20% chance to ignore weapon defense. Find a flat map and this class performs very consistently.
7. Spearman (A Tier)
Spearmen get the longest range among warriors, Iron Will for stance and defense, and a Final Attack that heals to save potions. Spears and pole arms are slow, so you will not feel explosive, but the utility and survivability keep them solid.
8. Page (A Tier)
Pages hit the hardest with Final Attack among warriors and get a chance to ignore defense with blunt weapons. Threaten is clunky to spam constantly, and the class has no self healing or additional mobbing beyond Slash Blast and Rush. Fine but less exciting than the other warriors.
9. Assassin (B Tier)
Assassins keep spamming Lucky Seven with Critical Throw adding 15% crit rate and 35% crit damage. Drain gives self healing, and Haste provides top mobility. The problem is zero mobbing. You are stuck on single target all the way to third job, which hurts EXP speed. Fun to play, just not fast.
10. Bandit (B Tier)
Bandits are late bloomers. Max Savage Blow deals six hits of 75% for a total of 450% damage, the top single target output in second job. Steal pulls two monsters and buffs attack power. Mobbing is weak though, and Double Stab is actually better than Savage Blow until the skill is fully leveled.
MapleStory Classic Best 3rd Job Tier List
Third job is not launching with the game, but once it arrives it reshuffles the ranking. Based on the second closed online test, here is how each advancement looks.
1. Dragon Knight (S Tier)
Dragon Knights are back on top. Dragon Fury and Piercing Crusher have their own damage multipliers, so you are not locked into one weapon type. Final Attack heals to offset Dragon Blood's HP drain, Hyper Body boosts party HP, and Rush covers mobility. Great mobbing, better mobility, sustain, knockback resistance, and flexibility all in one package.
2. Ranger (S Tier)
Rangers have everything clicking. Arrow Rain hits like a truck, Inferno adds fire elemental damage with burn, Wind Step gives forward mobility, and crits apply slows. Puppet lets you train from safer distance, while Arrow Rain is perfect for diving into mobs. One of the most complete kits in the game.
3. Hermit (A Tier)
Hermits lost their flash jump monopoly since Bandits now share it, and their damage took a small hit. Still, they get a one death prevention skill, Dark Sight dropping all aggro is absurd, and mobility stays excellent. Shadow Partner doubles Lucky Seven output and Avenger gives multi target options.
4. Chief Bandit (A Tier)
Chief Bandit trades damage for insane utility. Flash Jump plus Assaulter equals huge mobility, Chakra provides healing, Dark Sight still breaks aggro, and Meso Guard plus a shield plus stance stacks tankiness. Playstyle variety is wild with Meso Explosion, Band of Thieves, Assaulter, and Savage Blow all viable.
5. Ice Lightning Mage (A Tier)
Still busted even without the full freeze. Thunder Spear hits two monsters with a 50% chance to Electrocute at max level, and mobbing with Ice Strike stays top notch. The removal of freeze keeps it from reaching S tier, but damage output and crowd control remain elite.
6. Fire Poison Mage (A Tier)
The biggest surprise of the test. Poison Mist combined with Explosion creates strong burst damage that scales off the poison damage over time effect. Explosion can be cast while jumping, which feels great. El Nath being the max level area means fire elemental advantage lines up nicely.
7. Crusader (B Tier)
Crusaders feel okay but nothing amazing. Axe fighters get two bleed effects and raw damage, Rush fixes old mobility problems, and Shout generates two combo orbs. The issue is Shout feels weak to use, range is short, and combos reset after Panic or Coma. Will scale better against tankier late game monsters.
9. Sniper (B Tier)
Snipers deal good damage but the kit overlaps on itself. Blizzard slows monsters, but crits already slow them from a second job passive. The backward Evasion Step is awkward since you rarely want to move backwards in Classic World. Rangers do almost everything Snipers do but better.
10. White Knight (B Tier)
White Knight finally climbed out of the basement. Charge Blow no longer dispels charges at max level, and burn, slow, and Electrocute statuses are available depending on which element you charge. Rush fixes mobility, but the class is heavily dependent on fighting monsters with the right elemental weakness.
11. Priest (C Tier)
Priests had a rough test. Shining Ray damage is low, Heal was nerfed hard, and Holy Symbol was reworked into a self revive that still costs EXP when you die. The class feels stuck between weaker support and subpar damage. Hopefully this one gets some love before third job officially drops.
MapleStory Classic Best Solo Class Ranking
If you plan to play without a dedicated party, you need self sustain, mobbing, and survivability all in one kit. Here are the top solo picks.
1. Ice Lightning Wizard / Mage
Thunderbolt hitting six mobs is the single best solo farming skill in second job. Magic Guard tanks damage, teleport gives mobility, and MP sustain is manageable. In third job, Ice Strike and Thunder Spear keep the solo party rolling. This is the easy mode choice if you want to AFK farm your way through classic world.
2. Cleric / Priest
Clerics are built for solo survival. Heal regenerates HP for free every five seconds, Invincible reduces physical damage, and Holy Arrow handles mobs weak to holy. Low potion costs let you grind for hours without going broke. Priest loses some of its edge, but second job cleric solos exceptionally well.
3. Dragon Knight (post third job)
Once third job arrives, Dragon Knight is a solo monster. Dragon Roar hits up to eight mobs with map wide AoE, Final Attack heals, Dragon Blood buffs damage, and Hyper Body keeps the HP pool massive. Great mobbing and sustain in one package.
4. Fire Poison Mage
Teleport mobility, Fire Arrow burst, and Poison Mist plus Explosion combos make this a strong solo pick, especially around El Nath where fire elemental advantage shines.
MapleStory Classic Best Mobbing Class Ranking
Mobbing is the heart of EXP farming. Classes that can delete groups of monsters in one or two casts will out level everyone else.
1. Ice Lightning Wizard
Thunderbolt hits six monsters, period. No other second job skill matches that mob count. Combined with teleport for repositioning, this is the mobbing king.
2. Fighter (Axe)
Final Attack hits three enemies for 140% at max level and procs 50% of the time for free, on top of Slash Blast and Axe bleed effects. Fighters sit right in the middle of mob packs and shred everything.
3. Crossbowman
Iron Arrow pierces up to four monsters in a horizontal line for 180% damage. On flat maps, this is one of the most consistent mobbing skills in the game.
4. Hunter
Arrow Bomb explodes on up to four mobs and has a chance to stun. Works best on maps with multiple platforms where the explosion radius catches more targets.
5. Fire Poison Wizard
Poison Breath hits up to five total targets with the primary mob getting hit twice. Not as efficient as Thunderbolt, but still solid AoE.
6. Dragon Knight (post third job)
Dragon Roar hits up to eight monsters in a massive radius around you, basically map wide. The two second self stun is the trade off, but the mobbing output is unreal.
MapleStory Classic Best Training Class Ranking
Training combines mobbing speed, mobility, meso efficiency, and overall grind comfort. These are the fastest classes to level in Classic World.
1. Ice Lightning Wizard
Reach Florina Beach at level 40, head to Lorang territory, and farm until level 70. Elemental advantage plus six target Thunderbolt plus teleport equals the fastest training path in the game.
2. Cleric
Not the fastest raw EXP, but the cheapest to maintain. Low potion costs, self healing, and holy damage advantage on many maps mean you can grind for hours without hemorrhaging mesos. Ant Tunnel training is especially strong.
3. Fighter (Axe)
Melee training is slower early on, but once Final Attack and Axe bleed start firing, Fighters train shockingly fast. Rush covers mobility and Rage boosts party damage.
4. Hunter / Crossbowman
Both bowman branches train well thanks to Soul Arrow removing ammo worries and strong AoE skills. Crossbowman shines on flat maps while Hunter prefers multi platform setups.
5. Fire Poison Wizard
Teleport plus Fire Arrow burst plus Poison Breath AoE makes for a comfortable training experience across all second job level ranges, especially where fire weak monsters appear.
6. Spearman
Final Attack healing saves potion costs, Iron Will adds knockback resistance, and spear range is the best among warriors. Not explosive, but very simple and sustainable.
MapleStory Classic Best Bossing Class Ranking
Bossing in Classic World mostly means area bosses like Mano, Mushmom, Zombie Mushmom, Rotten Mushmom, and Junior Balrog at launch. Single target damage and survivability matter most here.
1. Bandit (2nd Job)
Savage Blow deals 450% total damage at max level, the highest single hit damage in second job. If you are hunting Mushmom or Zombie Mushmom for ILBI throwing stars, Bandit is a top pick.
2. Fire Poison Mage (3rd Job)
Fire Arrow and Elemental Composition deal massive single target damage, especially against fire weak bosses. The poison mist plus explosion detonation combo adds huge burst.
3. Dragon Knight (3rd Job)
Piercing Crusher hits three times for high single target output, Dragon Blood boosts damage further, and Hyper Body keeps the HP pool massive for tanking boss hits. Great balance of damage and survival.
4. Ranger (3rd Job)
Strafe fires four arrows at one target for consistent single target DPS, Inferno adds burn damage over time, and Puppet lets you tank hits from a safer distance.
5. Crusader (3rd Job)
Panic releases combo orbs for massive single target damage. The combo build up is slow, but when fully stacked, Crusader deals serious boss damage. Will scale better against tankier late game bosses.
6. Hermit (3rd Job)
Shadow Partner doubles Lucky Seven output, which stacks up fast on bosses. Not the top single target pick, but still respectable with good mobility for dodging boss attacks.
Rankings aside, MapleStory Classic World is going to be slow, so you will be playing your character for hundreds of hours. Pick a class that looks cool to you and plays in a way you enjoy. A grinder with free time on an Assassin will out level a casual player on a Fighter every single time.
For the fastest EXP, Fighter and Ice Lightning Wizard are the second job picks to beat. For long term third job success, Dragon Knight and Ranger lead the pack. If you want chill farming with low meso costs, Cleric is hard to top. And if you want pure single target damage for area bosses, Bandit and later Fire Poison Mage are top contenders. Pick what fits your style, roll your character, and get ready to grind. See you in Victoria Island.
