How to Get & Use Splinter of Destruction in Diablo 4 Season 15

Launched on September 15, 2026 with Patch 3.2.1, Diablo 4 Season 15 (Season of Hell's Legacy) introduces the iconic Prime Evil Splinter system as its core seasonal mechanic. Guided by the returning Horadrim sage Deckard Cain, players embark on a special seasonal questline to confront the echoes of three classic Prime Evils. Among the three obtainable Evil Splinters, Baal’s Splinter of Destruction stands out as the most well-rounded option for early leveling, material farming, and targeted endgame loot grinding. This guide fully details Diablo 4 Splinter of Destruction acquisition methods, core functions, upgrade progression, gameplay modifications, and usage tips.

Diablo 4 Splinter of Destruction (Baal)

The Splinter of Destruction is one of three exclusive Prime Evil Splinters in Diablo 4 Season 15, tied to the Prime Evil Baal. Unlike generic consumables or socketable gems, it is a permanent seasonal alignment power that defines your endgame gameplay loops and unlocks exclusive combat and farming buffs.

It is critical to distinguish Prime Evil Splinters from Soul Splinters. The Splinter of Destruction is a seasonal active alignment power that you equip one at a time, while Soul Splinters are separate socketable gem items with distinct bonuses and drawbacks. The two systems are independent and do not conflict with each other.

While equipped, this splinter grants players the Ice of Excidium Iconic Power, a passive combat ability that triggers automatically during battles. It delivers a powerful main cold blast (around 69,066 base cold damage) paired with multiple small cold projectile hits (13,813 base damage per projectile), making it a perfect match for cold-scaling builds that rely on chill and freeze effects.

Every Prime Evil Splinter comes with a unique trade-off. The Splinter of Destruction boosts your farming efficiency significantly but makes you more vulnerable to Baal’s echoes in Waking Nightmare encounters. Players need to adjust their cold resistance and defensive stats accordingly to offset this weakness.

How to Get Splinter of Destruction in Diablo 4?

All three Prime Evil Splinters (Terror, Destruction, Hatred) are obtained through the fixed Season 15 questline, with no random drop factors involved.

First, complete the opening seasonal questline initiated by Deckard Cain. During the quest, you are required to defeat three Prime Evil echoes in classic Diablo series locations: Diablo beneath Tristram Cathedral, Baal at the Arreat Summit, and Mephisto within the Durance of Hate.

After successfully slaying all three echoes, you will automatically receive all three Evil Splinters, including the Splinter of Destruction. At this stage, you can choose any one splinter to equip and activate its corresponding reputation track and gameplay buffs.

If you have previously chosen another splinter and want to switch to the Splinter of Destruction later in the season, you can obtain a new Splinter of Destruction by clearing the largest Waking Nightmares (Torment-difficulty capstone encounters). Notably, switching splinters will not reset your existing reputation progress on any track, allowing you to freely switch gameplay focuses without losing upgrades.

D4 Splinter of Destruction Uses & Modifications

The Splinter of Destruction is tailored for two core endgame activities: Kurast Undercity runs and Lair Boss farming. It also provides exclusive bonus modifiers for the Tree of Whispers via seasonal War Plan nodes, greatly improving XP gain, loot quality, and material acquisition efficiency. It is widely recognized as the best seasonal choice for fast leveling and early-to-mid game gear farming.

Kurast Undercity Exclusive Buffs

The Undercity is the most efficient repeatable leveling and loot loop in Season 15, and the Splinter of Destruction’s buffs drastically amplify its farming value through rank-locked War Plan upgrades:

  • Rank 4 (Jade Epiphany): Increases Experience Orb gains by 50% and raises global Monster Power by an additional 1. Combined with the season’s boosted Undercity XP rewards, this upgrade lets players level rapidly from early game to level 70 with consistent Undercity runs.

  • Rank 8 (Endless Swarm): Spawns an Invasion Portal at the start of every Undercity floor, adding extra enemy packs and more opportunities to stack Attunement for higher-rank end rewards.

  • Rank 12 (Last Gasp): Adjusts the time bonus mechanic, allowing players to earn double run time when 15 seconds or less remain on the dungeon timer (down from the original 5 seconds). This makes high-Attunement runs far easier to complete and reduces run failure rates.

Lair Boss Farming Buffs

For players targeting endgame materials, unique gear, and rune farming, the Splinter of Destruction offers powerful Lair Boss modifiers at high reputation ranks:

  • Rank 14 (Lair of Runes): Forces Lair Bosses to drop additional runes, supporting the new Season 15 runeword crafting system for early power boosts.

  • Rank 18 (Two by Two): Greatly increases the spawn chance of the Nemesis Lair portal, granting more chances to fight rare bosses and obtain exclusive loot.

  • Rank 20 (Exotic Armory): Makes Lair Boss hoard chests drop 3 extra class-unique items per clear, drastically speeding up targeted unique gear farming for build completion.

Tree of Whispers Shared Modifier

Like the other two Prime Evil Splinters, the Splinter of Destruction enhances Tree of Whispers content with two dedicated upgrades:

  • Rank 5 (Grim Retribution): Triggers Whisper Ambusher encounters more frequently, increasing elite enemy spawns and loot opportunities during Whisper bounties.

  • Rank 22 (Colossal Foe): Boosts Boss Ambush Monster Power by +2 and guarantees Superior Lair Key drops from ambush bosses, supplying stable resources for continuous Lair Boss farming.

Splinter of Destruction Reputation Track & Iconic Power Upgrades

The Splinter of Destruction features a unified reputation progression system with 24 maximum ranks, requiring a total of 20,000 reputation to fully max out. Reputation is earned by clearing Waking Nightmares and slaying Prime Evil remnants. Each key rank unlocks enhanced Ice of Excidium power effects and gameplay buffs:

  • Rank 1 (0 Reputation): Unlocks base Ice of Excidium cold damage burst and projectile attacks

  • Rank 2 (350 Reputation): Siege Engine – Basic combat buff for sustained farming

  • Rank 6 (1,300 Reputation): Cold Blood – Generates 50 Primary Resources per Iconic Power trigger, solving resource sustain issues for most builds

  • Rank 10 (5,150 Reputation): Grisly Trophies – Improves loot drop quality from elite and boss enemies

  • Rank 16 (13,100 Reputation): Seizing Frost – Enhances cold crowd control effects and damage stacking

  • Rank 21 (17,400 Reputation): Shattered Flesh – Adds 20% of the enemy’s maximum life as bonus damage over 4 seconds on initial hits, massively boosting single-target boss damage

  • Rank 24 (20,000 Reputation, Capstone): Thrill of Ruin – Dramatically amplifies the damage and trigger frequency of Ice of Excidium, maximizing late-game combat output

D4 Splinter of Destruction Best Uses & Seasonal Strategy

The Splinter of Destruction is the optimal early-season choice for most players, with a clear and practical seasonal progression strategy:

  • Early Game (Leveling 1–70): Equip this splinter exclusively. Its Undercity XP buffs provide the fastest leveling route in Season 15, letting you reach endgame in the shortest time. The extra unique drops and rune gains also help you assemble a viable build before max level.

  • Mid Game (Gear Farming): Stick to Destruction for continuous Lair Boss and Undercity runs. The Superior Lair Key bonus and extra unique item drops accelerate endgame gear and material collection.

  • Late Game (Endgame Pushing): After completing leveling and basic gear farming, you can switch to Mephisto’s Splinter of Hatred for The Pit and Nightmare Dungeon glyph pushing. Your fully upgraded Destruction reputation will be retained, so you can switch back anytime for additional material farming.

Splinter of Destruction Limitations & Notes

  • Players can only equip one Prime Evil Splinter at a time; multiple splinter buffs cannot be stacked simultaneously.

  • The equipped Splinter of Destruction increases incoming damage from Baal’s echoes in Waking Nightmares. Players must prioritize cold resistance and defensive stats when using this splinter for endgame content.

  • Reputation progress for all three splinter tracks is permanent. Switching splinters does not reset any unlocked ranks or upgrades.

  • It is not compatible with Solo Self-Found (SSF) mode trading rules, though all self-farmed buffs and loot effects remain active for SSF characters.
