Diablo 4 Season 14 Best War Plans Builds & Activities Skill Tree Upgrades

War Plans have completely changed the way Diablo 4's endgame is played. First introduced with the Lord of Hatred expansion, the system continues to evolve in Season 14 with major upgrades — including the long-awaited Party Sync feature, faster activity XP, two new War Plan quests, and adjustments to Helltide progress mechanics.

This Season 14 guide covers how the updated War Plans system works, how to use the new Party Sync, the best leveling routes through War Plans, and a full ranking of every activity skill tree with optimal node setups for both solo and group play.

Updated for Diablo 4 Season 14.

How Does The War Plans Endgame Activity Work?

War Plans operate through a command table located in Temis, the new city within the Skovos region. At this table, you select a path of activities to complete in a specific order from top to bottom.

Choosing Your Path

  • Each time you approach the table, you're presented with a branching path with multiple rows you can pick one node from.

  • Pick your route based on the activities themselves and the rewards attached to each node.

  • Reward rarities go from magic (blue) to rare to legendary (orange). Orange rewards are the most valuable.

  • Some special rewards can be massive — players have reported seeing payouts as large as 5 billion gold and even mythics on certain paths.

A useful tip: try to pick paths where the same activity repeats two or three times in a row. Three Hell Tide nodes in sequence lets you stay in one tide for ~10 minutes and open every chest, while three Nightmare Dungeons in a row lets you complete an entire Escalation key in a single chained run.

Activity Experience & Skill Tree Leveling

  • Each activity has its own skill tree that levels from 1 to 7.

  • Nodes you invest in dramatically affect what drops, what spawns, and how rewarding each run becomes.

  • Leveling these trees outside of War Plans is nearly impossible — going from zero to the first threshold on Lair Bosses would require roughly 125 boss kills done independently, versus a single War Plan completion granting equivalent progress.

Rerolling Plans

  • You get three free rerolls per plan if you don't like your options.

  • After those three, you must complete whatever plan you have.

  • Once you commit and hit start, a new icon appears on your map, and you can teleport directly to each activity in sequence.

  • You don't have to commit to every activity — you can path past Infernal Hordes or anything else you want to skip.

Season 14 Activity XP Buffs

Blizzard increased all War Plan activity XP scaling to Torment VIII+, addressing the slow accumulation that plagued earlier seasons. The base activity XP for Infernal Hordes and Nightmare Dungeons with Escalation Sigils has also been raised.

General Routing Strategy

The rule of thumb is to pick activities that take the least amount of time but offer the greatest reward. When choosing path rewards, prioritize dungeon keys, obols, experience, and Horadric Cube upgrade materials. Everything else you pick up between those is a nice bonus.

How To Access War Plans

  • War Plans are only available if you own the Lord of Hatred expansion.

  • They become accessible after you complete the Lord of Hatred campaign at least once on a character.

  • On a fresh character, your first Path will only require finishing two activities before claiming rewards.

  • Completing more War Paths will increase the amount of activities required from future War Plans, with rewards scaling up accordingly.

The system starts small but grows into a massive progression framework over time.

War Plans Co-Op: The Season 14 Party Sync Revolution

Season 14 finally delivers the most requested War Plans feature: Party War Plan Sync.

How Party Sync Works in Season 14

  • The entire party needs to be in Temis.

  • A new option called New Plan for Party is available at the War Plans table.

  • Once selected, a party-wide reroll is initiated and a vote begins.

  • Once all players accept, a single synchronized War Plan is created for every member of your party.

  • Plans are synced regardless of War Plan Level or other states (Torment Level, campaign completion, etc.).

The Cost

  • The party leader (initiator) pays two Marks of El'druin to start the sync.

  • In a four-person party, this still leaves plenty of room for at least four full Party War Plan runs before needing to spend more marks.

  • All players must confirm before the sync occurs.

Why This Is a Huge Quality of Life Win

  • Previously, war plan paths were randomized independently for each player, so they almost never lined up between friends.

  • Non-leader party members only got an 80% activity XP cache and small participation rewards.

  • Now everyone progresses together no matter where they're at in the campaign or season.

One Still Open Request: Account-Wide War Plans

During the developer Q&A, lead systems designer Art Peshkov stated: "We hear you on the feedback for per-character War Plans. We are investigating making this be per-partition, which is how Paragon works when you start the season. We'll have more to discuss later." For now, every character still starts their War Plans progression from scratch.

Best War Plans & Activity Trees for Leveling

The addition of War Plans has changed how players interact with leveling content by adding customizations and bonus rewards per activity. Using these bonuses correctly can speed up your way to endgame dramatically.

Helltides and Hellwyrms - The Top Leveling Activity

Helltides remain one of the best XP sources in the entire game, so you'll want to spend a big portion of your leveling time inside them.

  • Stack as many Helltide nodes as possible into your War Plans early.

  • Level the Helltide tree quickly so you can grab the Hellmouth and Writhe and Rot (Wretched Vermin) nodes.

  • Once unlocked, your goal is to spawn and kill as many Hellwyrms as possible.

  • Hellwyrms start appearing at Threat Level 2 and drop XP globes when killed.

  • These XP globes provide an enormous chunk of experience, easily the fastest leveling fuel in the season.

Season 14 note: Helltide War Plan progress now comes from collecting Cinders (75 in Normal through Penitent, 250 in Torment I+) instead of opening chests, making the activity feel smoother and more rewarding to play normally.

Tree of Whispers - Don't Skip Corrupted Roots Early

Many players ignore the Tree of Whispers tree during leveling, but you should put your first point into Corrupted Roots.

  • Corrupted Roots are a powerful endgame farming tech that lets you spawn enemies repeatedly.

  • If you don't invest in this node, you'll never get them out of whisper caches.

  • By the time you reach Torment 8, 9, or 10, you'll already have a stockpile of Corrupted Roots in your inventory ready for instant super-farms.

Kurast Undercity - The Level 25 Power Spike

Kurast Undercity opens at level 25 and gives you a strong alternative to Helltide farming.

  • Once you have enough activity XP, get the Jade Epiphany node, which grants experience orbs as you gain Attunement levels.

  • The plan is simple: blast through the Undercity, destroy everything, and kill the boss.

  • Runs take about a minute each, so they chain into War Plans extremely well.

War Plans Bonus XP Rewards

When picking your War Plan path, prioritize nodes that offer bonus experience orbs.

  • These reward bonuses double-dip with Helltide and Undercity XP gains.

  • Nightmare Dungeons and The Pit are solid alternatives if no Helltides or Undercity nodes are available.

  • Avoid Infernal Hordes during leveling - they consume far more time than other activities, even with the Season 14 XP doubling.

By combining Helltides, Undercity, and well-chosen War Plan paths, you can level up rapidly and get ready for Torment progression.

Diablo 4 Best War Plans Skill Tree Builds & Upgrades for Each Activity

Now that the system is clear, here's how every War Plans tree ranks in Season 14, from strongest to weakest, with full setup recommendations for each.

1. Undercity War Plans Skill Tree - Best for Mythic Farming & Forgotten Souls

The Undercity tree remains one of the top War Plan investments, although Season 14 brought a notable nerf — the average amount of Echoing Hatred invitations dropped from Undercity runs has been reduced. Mythic farming through Portal Pranksters is still excellent.

How to Set Up the Skill Tree

Start with Invasion Portals (top), then take the right side first:

  • Jade Epiphany (XP Orbs) — Paragon experience that applies across all your characters. One of the best passive XP boosts available.

  • Tuning Prism Tributes — Fuels your unique-item crafting pipeline. Players regularly stockpile 1,000+ tuning prisms through Undercity farming alone.

  • Initiative (Bottom Node) — Beating the boss within the time limit extends your max reward bar from 4 to 6, giving roughly 50% extra rewards per run. This is free juice on every Undercity once your build clears at appropriate Torment.

After locking in the right path, head left for the Portal Pranksters chain:

  • Gutterfilth — Activating beacons can summon Portal Pranksters.

  • Trials and Tributes — Each Prankster killed adds an additional tribute chest after the district boss. At Torment 8+ with mythic tributes, each chest is nearly guaranteed to drop a mythic.

  • Unfortunate Souls (Wisps) — Surviving wisps grant Forgotten Souls and crafting materials at the end. Very hard to farm anywhere else.

Skip: The middle path's time-extension node, the rune merchant, and the final floor shortcut (it conflicts with the Prankster strategy).

Rewards & Loot

Mythic items (2-4 per run with pranksters at T8+), Forgotten Souls, runes, Horadric Cube materials, and tribute-type drops. You can also amalgamate 5 lesser tributes into 1 higher-rarity tribute through the Horadric Cube.

Tips

  • Activate every beacon on every floor — don't skip any.

  • Kill the Portal Pranksters that emerge from portals near beacons.

  • Many chests now auto-open, awarding extra mythics passively.

Party & Solo Viability

This tree is strong both solo and in groups. Solo players can amalgamate legendary armament tributes into mythics. In a four-person party with synced War Plans (Season 14), everyone brings one tribute, giving the group four runs. Groups regularly walk out with 15+ mythics across those runs.

2. Helltides War Plans Skill Tree — Best for Paragon XP, Lair Boss Keys & Boss Trophies

Helltides remain the single best activity for paragon experience in Season 14, especially with the Maggot-focused middle path and the new Cinder-based War Plan progress mechanic.

How to Set Up the Skill Tree

Take Hellmouth and Wretched Vermin as your first two points, then commit to Maggots in the middle:

  • Maggots — When the hellworm emerges, it produces maggots instead of rifts/blood seekers. Players gain 20-30 million XP from a single hellworm at high Torment.

  • Bursting Brood — Maggots and Pangs of Dural explode and drop boss trophies in absurd quantities. Players have stockpiled nearly a thousand Exquisite Blood passively.

  • Wretched Vermin — Rats that drop massive amounts of cinders, so you never run out of currency.

Hellworm Alternatives

  • Chaos drops a wide spread of normal extra loot — good if you want item volume over XP.

  • Blood Seekers are juiced with extra loot, increasing the tide's overall reward density.

  • Maggots remains the king for paragon farming.

Right Side (Chest Farmers)

If you spend lots of time inside the tide opening chests, the right side is excellent:

  • Extra cinders and a bonus oversized chest when you spend most of your cinders.

  • Best path for Lair Boss Keys, including the Crux of Mephisto. Players regularly accumulate 15+ keys per session.

Left Side (Threat & Hellborn)

  • Hellborn Butchers — Spawn at max threat level and drop Profane Mine Cages, which boost monster power across the overworld (stacks up to 3x).

  • The left side also increases Hellborn appearance rates inside Nightmare Dungeons.

Pro Tip — Roots Synergy

If you've taken Corrupted Roots from the Tree of Whispers tree, drop them at Soul Spires inside Hell Tides. They attract monsters and multiply your cinder gain — players have gone from 170 cinders to 600+ during a single Soul Spire event.

Skip

The 666-cinder Hell's Prize chest still drops poorly compared to standard 250-cinder chests.

Season 14 Update

War Plan progress in Helltides now comes from collecting Cinders (75 in Normal-Penitent, 250 in Torment I+). This makes the activity flow much more naturally, since you're now rewarded for doing what you'd already be doing.

Party & Solo Viability

Helltides work well in both modes. Group threat levels rise faster, meaning hellworms spawn sooner. XP gains are personal, so grouping doesn't dilute the experience rewards. Note that dying removes stacked Profane Mine Cages, so play carefully once they're active.

3. The Pit War Plans Skill Tree — Best for Glyph Upgrades & Consistent XP

The Pit remains the premier activity for leveling glyphs, and the right War Plan nodes can earn you up to 4 additional glyph upgrade chances beyond the base reward every run.

How to Set Up the Skill Tree

Every build, on every character, should grab these first:

  • Chronos' Haste — +1 glyph upgrade per 5 minutes left on the timer. Easy +2 per run for any reasonable speed build.

  • Heart of Stone — Pick up the item at the start; monsters drop progress orbs that shave 20-30 seconds off your run. Deposit at the Chrono Pedestal for +1 more upgrade.

Middle Path (XP Conversion)

  • Chronos' Soul / Shant Soul — All progress orbs grant XP. Once glyphs are maxed at 150, sacrifice unused upgrade chances for ~10 million XP per run.

  • Pit Butcher — A ~1 in 30 chance for the Butcher to appear. Killing him ends the run with full rewards.

Right Side (Worth Considering Now)

Newer testing has changed the verdict on the right side:

  • Cursed Rituals — Click flowers, rocks, and ritual sites for extra loot.

  • Artificer Stones / Cursed Merchant — A vendor occasionally appears selling items that almost always carry greater affixes.

  • Cursed Offerings — Extremely rare (~1 in 10-20 runs) but extremely rewarding when found. Reportedly drop Trace of Echoes very frequently — the key material for Echoing Hatred.

Skip

Orb Thieves leave annoying trap trails. Most testers regret investing in them.

Rewards & Loot

Glyph upgrades (up to +4 additional per run), 5+ million XP per run from clearing, another 10 million from converting upgrades when glyphs are maxed, and faster pit tier progression from Heart of Stone orbs.

Best Builds

Speed-focused builds that can clear Pit 110+ in under 5 minutes are ideal — Ball Lightning Sorcerer, Spiritborn speed builds, and any class with strong mobility and AoE. Note that highly mobile builds (like perma-teleport Sorcerer) may skip over progress orbs from Heart of Stone, slightly reducing the node's value.

Party & Solo Viability

The Pit is primarily a solo activity in War Plans. There's no meaningful party benefit, though glyph upgrades benefit your character regardless of how you play afterward.

4. Nightmare Dungeons War Plans Skill Tree — Best for Gold, Escalation Sigils & Primordial Dust

Nightmare Dungeons have become much stronger than first impressions suggested, with Season 14 adding a new War Plan quest tied to Escalation Sigils that grants a huge chunk of activity XP.

How to Set Up the Skill Tree

Most players go down the middle first, then branch left or right.

Left Path (Hidden Powerhouse)

  • Soul Shrine (Gauntlet) — Click the shrine; every monster you kill during its buff is stored and respawns later, stacking across multiple shrines.

  • Nemesis Bracer Effect — When picked up, can spawn up to 7 elites at once. Pairs perfectly with the shrine respawn.

  • Conviction Chest — A buff stacks as you kill elites and pick up globes; don't take hits and you keep the buff for a much larger end-of-dungeon chest.

  • War Bounty Chest — Extra chest at completion.

  • Primordial Dust Chest — A green chest at the end with ~50% chance to drop Attuned Primordial Dust (one of the only farmable sources for unique-power rerolls).

Middle Path (Escalation Pipeline)

  • Boss Revive — Bosses have a chance to revive when slain, giving a second round of loot.

  • Monster Power — Bosses gain +1 monster power.

  • Escalation Sigils — Bosses have a chance to drop Escalation Sigils. You can also convert 5 regular nightmare sigils into 1 escalation sigil at the Horadric Cube.

  • Branching Pathways — Two additional Horadric portals appear during escalation. Options include Vile Splendor, Gold Reserve, Gem Reserve, Material Reserve, and Horadric Cube Reserve. Gold and Vile Splendor produce hundreds of millions of gold from a single escalation run.

Right Path (Goblins)

  • Goblin Fall — Treasure goblins can drop Treasure Breach sigils.

  • Greed is Good — Killing 30 elites across all dungeons triggers a random event (goblins, butcher, riches, or misfortune).

  • Goblin's Retreat — Rare chance to spawn a portal to a treasure room. Incredibly rewarding when it happens.

Tip

Always check for the Soul Shrine on entry. If you see it, slow down and clear monsters along the way — the end-of-dungeon respawn wave will be huge.

Rewards & Loot

Escalation Sigils, gold (hundreds of millions from Vile Splendor runs), 10,000 Obdessite from Asteroth on T12, Attuned Primordial Dust, Treasure Breach sigils, and general loot from boss revives.

Season 14 Update

A new War Plan quest tied to completing Nightmare Dungeon Escalations now grants a massive amount of activity experience, making this tree level much faster in Season 14.

Party & Solo Viability

Fast in both modes. Escalation dungeons scale well with parties. If you stack multiple Nightmare Dungeon tasks in a row in your War Plan, you can finish two or three within a single Escalation chain.

5. Lair Bosses War Plans Skill Tree — Best for Massive Loot Explosions, Mythic Drops & Build-Specific Targeting

The Lair Bosses tree's middle path — the Nemesis portal chain — produces some of the largest single loot explosions in the entire game.

How to Set Up the Skill Tree

Rush straight down the middle path:

  • Nemesis Lair (2x2) — After opening a horde chest while fighting a lair boss, a red portal can appear nearby. Inside, you fight two initiate lair bosses for free (Lord Zir, Baron, Beast in the Ice, Ivar, or Gregoire). Mythic drop rate sits around 9 out of 10 procs.

  • Greater Nemesis — A second portal can lead to a Greater Nemesis lair with two greater bosses (Duriel, Balile, etc.).

  • Ultimate Nemesis Lair — Requires five Betrayer Husks. Currently reported as bugged or underperforming — consider skipping until patched.

Build-Specific Targeting (The Sleeper Power)

The outer nodes let you choose which bosses spawn in other activities based on your build's loot needs:

  • Greekwall/Lunatic Warlock farmer? Set Lair Bosses to spawn from Hell Tides and pick the boss whose loot table contains Greekwall.

  • Sorcerer hunting Beast in the Ice? Route him into Nightmare Dungeons.

  • Asteroth shortcut — His normal access is through Escalation NMDs or Infernal Hordes (~10 minutes). Balile can drop loot from Asteroth's table, so spawning Balile saves enormous time.

Season 14 Update

Both Asteroth and Bartk now have boss trophies that can be transmuted inside the Horadric Cube to target-farm their respective unique item pools — a huge addition for build-specific gearing.

Skip / Optional

Lair of Plenty (2x horde chests) — the second chest reportedly doesn't proc Nemesis or Balile.

Rewards & Loot

Massive loot explosions (roughly 30 bosses' worth from a single Nemesis proc), mythic items, unique items, runes, build-specific drops, and gold. Season 14's new boss trophy transmutation adds another layer of targeted farming on top.

Party & Solo Viability

In Season 14, with Party War Plan Sync, the Nemesis node is now shared across the entire group when synced. Every player still needs the Nemesis node in their own tree to receive loot from the encounter. Synced groups turn Nemesis portals into shared jackpots.

6. Tree of Whispers War Plans Skill Tree — Best for Passive Gains, Corrupted Roots & Early Sparks

The Tree of Whispers levels naturally as you complete other War Plan activities. Players consistently max it out without trying.

Most Important First Pick — Corrupted Roots

Corrupted Roots should be your first investment for both leveling and endgame:

  • They spawn enemies repeatedly when dropped on the ground.

  • They are the same lures referenced as "Ka Roots" in earlier patches.

  • Without this node, you'll never get them from whisper caches.

  • Combined with Hell Tide Soul Spires, players have gone from 170 cinders to 600+ in a single Soul Spire event.

  • They also pair beautifully with the Nightmare Dungeon respawn shrine for absurd density.

Top Pick — Always Take

  • Tree of Plenty (Spin and Spark) — Adds a 4th cache option on every turn-in. Ancestral and greater collection caches show up much more often.

Right Path — Whisper Ambushes (Strongly Recommended)

  • Whisper Ambushes — Ambush events appear when completing whispers, anywhere — Pit, Undercity, open world. Drops Collections of Chaos.

  • Greater Collection Chaos — Stronger ambushers, better loot.

  • Baron Ambush — Whispers can trigger a Baron ambush, with a chance for Vyr and other bosses to spawn. Baron drops ancestral collections with greater affixes.

Middle Path Cache Upgrades

  • Wisdom of Whispers — Extra XP orbs in caches. Quietly delivers serious paragon levels over time.

  • Chaotic Favor — Chance for free Collections of Chaos on whisper completion.

  • Resplendent Spark — Small chance for a spark from caches. Players late in the season with abundant mythics may skip this, but early-season players should rush it.

Right-Side Cache Materials Path

Material caches (Forgotten Souls, gold, crafting mats) — useful late season when crafting resources matter more than item rolls.

Party & Solo Viability

Whispers complete passively in both modes. They happen naturally during Hell Tides, Nightmare Dungeons, and general open-world play.

7. Infernal Hordes War Plans Skill Tree

Infernal Hordes remain the most time-consuming War Plans activity, but Season 14 doubles their base activity XP to compensate, plus a new long-form Helltide-style quest improves the value of staying in horde content.

How to Set Up the Skill Tree

If you're doing the default 6-wave runs to clear your War Plan, grab Devil's Steel for a guaranteed 200 Aether and move on. If you're doing full 10-wave runs, invest in the middle path.

Middle Path — The Real Reason to Spec This Tree

  • Method of Madness — Your offering choices are weighted toward whatever category you previously picked. Lets you reliably build a single strategy (Soulspire, Aether Lords, Masses, Hellborn) every run. Confirmed Aether income at 10 waves: 1,200-1,800 per run without chaos waves.

  • Black Pact — Adds a 4th offering choice that matches your previous category.

  • Impending Doom — In the last 10 seconds of a wave, all spawn slots fill. Camping one spot generates hundreds of bonus Aether per wave with juiced mechanics.

  • Chaos Wave Options — Either suppress chaos waves entirely or amplify them for more frequent goblin jackpots.

Left Path — Chest of Talismans (Hidden MVP)

The Chest of Talismans is one of the best single-node values in the game right now. It costs only 100 Aether and drops a mix of seals and charms — including the chance for mythic seals. Always take it.

Right Path — Mixed Bag

  • Doomsayers — Big AoE casters that drop bonus Aether.

  • Scaled Toughness — Cleanses a wave instantly. Can solo-handle a Butcher spawn.

  • +200 Flat Aether Challenge — Requires a category upgrade you don't always have. Inconsistent.

Rewards & Loot

Aether (for end-of-horde cache choices), gem fragments (highly sought after this season), Obdessite, boss materials from chaos wave bosses, talisman chests, and general loot.

Tip

If your only goal is clearing the War Plan task fast, use the map teleport to get the 6-wave version instead of running an Infernal Hordes compass (10 waves). The Season 14 XP boost helps, but Hordes still consume far more time than the alternatives.

Party & Solo Viability

Hordes function in both modes. An interesting duo interaction exists: one player specs Method of Madness/Black Pact, the other specs the Chest of Talismans line — both effects apply simultaneously with two players. Adding a third reportedly breaks the interaction.

Recommended Overall War Plan Route (Season 14)

With all trees ranked and Season 14 changes accounted for, here's the optimal approach when selecting your five activities:

  • Always include The Pit — Fast (2-3 minutes), universal glyph value, and a Trace of Echoes source via cursed offerings.

  • Take Hell Tides whenever available — Maggot XP + Lair Boss keys + Profane Mine Cages stack into the season's best paragon farm. Season 14's Cinder-based progress makes them even smoother.

  • Nightmare Dungeons as quick filler — Soul Shrine + respawn synergy makes them surprisingly loot-dense, and the new Escalation Sigil quest in Season 14 is loaded with XP.

  • Undercity whenever possible — One-minute runs, Initiative for 50% extra rewards, and 2-4 mythics per Prankster-juiced T8+ run.

  • Lair Bosses for build-specific farming — Set spawn locations to target uniques you actually need; now with Asteroth and Bartk transmutable trophies.

  • Tree of Whispers passively — Levels itself, and Corrupted Roots + Whisper Ambushes are sleeper picks.

  • Avoid Infernal Hordes unless you specifically want Talisman Chests — they consume far more time than alternatives, even with doubled XP.

Season 14 brought the most requested War Plans feature with Party Sync, doubled the XP of slower activities, added two new long-form quests, and added Cinder-based Helltide progress. Combined with the new Solo Self-Found mode, raised obol and gold caps, and boss trophy target farming for Asteroth and Bartk, this season's War Plans rework is the largest quality-of-life patch since Lord of Hatred launched.

Apply the routing philosophy — minimum time, maximum reward — and your character's power and wealth will grow rapidly throughout Season 14.
