The Horadric Cube in Diablo 4 does a lot of things, but transmutation is arguably the most impactful feature it offers. Knowing which items to transmute - and when - can accelerate your gearing process dramatically and give you access to items that would otherwise take hours of farming to find.
Diablo 4 Transmutation Guide (Season 13 and Lord of Hatred)
Transmutation was added with the Lord of Hatred expansion and remains fully functional in Season 13. The system lets you convert items into new ones, combine duplicates for fresh rolls, upgrade consumables to higher tiers, and even guarantee specific Uniques. You gain access to the Horadric Cube after completing the LoH campaign in Timis, Scosglen. Here's everything you need to know about each transmutation recipe and how to get the most out of them.
What Is Transmutation in Diablo 4?
Transmutation is the act of converting items inside the Horadric Cube into new or upgraded versions of themselves. Instead of selling or salvaging every piece of unwanted loot, you can drop materials and gear into the cube to receive something more useful in return.
The cube handles a wide range of conversions, including:
Gear upgrades — turning Common items into Uniques, or Rare items into Legendaries.
Charm and Talisman manipulation — rerolling Set Charms and crafting Unique Charms.
Amalgamation — merging multiple lower-tier consumables into a higher-tier one.
Recycling — combining three duplicate Uniques into a fresh roll of the same Unique.
Transfiguration — sealing an item in place while granting it a bonus modifier.
In short, the cube turns the loot you'd usually throw away into the building blocks of your endgame gear.
How Does Transmute Work?
The process itself is straightforward, but the materials you use determine the result.
The Core Loop
You place items into the cube, choose a recipe, and add the required catalysts (like dust, prisms, or runes). The cube then produces a new item based on the recipe's rules.
Tuning Prisms Are the Key
When crafting affixes onto an item, Tuning Prisms dictate what stat pool the cube can pull from:
Adept Tuning Prism — main stat and skill ranks.
Aggressive Tuning Prism — offensive stats (crit damage multi, attack speed, weapon damage).
Protector Tuning Prism — life, armor, all resist, life on hit/kill.
Chromatic Tuning Prism — single-element resistances.
Pragmatic Tuning Prism — utility and mobility (CDR, barrier gen, thorns, life regen).
Resource Tuning Prism — resource-related affixes.
Cullen's Tuning Prism — used on amulets to add an extra Aspect.
You'll mostly rely on Aggressive, Protector, and Adept while gearing up.
Focus Roll vs. Chaotic Roll
A Focus Roll rerolls within the same affix bucket as the prism, while a Chaotic Roll can shuffle a stat into a different category entirely. Chaotic rerolls are handy when you want to push a useless stat (like Life Regen, which counts as both Life and Utility) into something offensive.
Transmute Outcomes
Results vary by recipe type.
Guaranteed Results
Amalgamation always produces exactly one item of the next tier. Combining 5 Nightmare Sigils always gives 1 Escalation Sigil. No RNG involved in the tier upgrade itself.
Random Within a Pool
Upgrading a Common item to Unique produces a random Unique from the available pool for that item type and class. Upgrading a Rare to Legendary applies a random Aspect. The 3-to-1 recipe gives a random new version of the same item category.
Can Produce Ancestral and Greater Affixes
Rerolled Set Charms can come back as Ancestral with higher stat ranges. They can also roll Greater Affixes and skill rank bonuses, making repeated transmutation a viable chase.
What Items To Transmute & How To
Below is every transmutation recipe, ordered from the most impactful to the most situational.
Upgrade to Unique (Common → Unique)
This lets you turn a Common equipment item into a random Unique of the same slot. The result is limited to Uniques available for your class (class-specific or general) in that equipment slot.
How to do it:
Get an Ancestral 900 item power item in the slot you want (buy from Purveyor of Curiosities, pick up from the ground, or craft at the Blacksmith).
If the item is Rare or Magic, use the cube's "Remove Affix" function to strip it down to Common rarity.
You cannot remove affixes from Legendary items — the base must be Rare, Magic, or already Common.
Place the Common item in the cube and select "Upgrade to Unique."
Why this is powerful:
On certain classes and slots, the Unique pool is very small. For Warlock daggers, for example, there are only a few possible outcomes. This makes it a near-guaranteed way to get the Unique you want without farming bosses.
You can repeat this process endlessly to fish for better rolls on the Unique power value. The material cost (Enhanced Primordial Dust) is modest.
Tip: Craft Magic pants (or whatever slot you need) at the Blacksmith, then strip them to Common. You may need to craft a few before getting an Ancestral result — but Ancestral items do appear from the Blacksmith.
Upgrade to Legendary (Rare → Legendary)
Transmuting a Rare equipment item produces a Legendary with a random Legendary Aspect applied to it.
How to do it:
Place any Rare item into the cube.
Select "Upgrade to Legendary."
Receive a Legendary version of that item with a random Aspect.
Why this is powerful:
Aspects no longer drop from specific dungeons. They only appear on random Legendary drops. This transmutation is one of the best ways to collect Aspects you haven't found yet, especially early in a character's progression.
Slot matters for Aspect type:
Each equipment slot can only roll certain Aspect categories. Gloves give offensive Aspects, boots give utility/mobility, pants and chest pieces give defensive Aspects, and rings give resource or offensive Aspects. Keep this in mind when choosing which Rare items to transmute.
Reroll Set Charm
Transmuting a Set Charm rerolls it into a different Charm from the same Set. The set type is preserved, but the specific piece name changes.
How to do it:
Place any Set Charm into the cube.
Select "Reroll Set Charm."
Receive a new charm from the same set.
Why this is powerful:
Completing your 5-piece set bonus is often a 200%+ damage increase. Instead of waiting for the right charm to drop, you can reroll duplicates until you get the missing piece.
Additional benefits of rerolling:
The rerolled charm can upgrade to Ancestral rarity (higher stat ceilings).
It can roll with Greater Affixes.
The implicit slot can roll +skill ranks (e.g., +3 Core Skills, +3 Abyss Skills) instead of movement speed.
Best secondary stat rolls include skill ranks, specific resistances, all stats, percentage life, and percentage armor.
A +4 skill rank from a Greater Affix roll is the ceiling chase for each charm slot.
Do not salvage duplicate Set Charms. Reroll them instead until your set is complete. Once complete, continue rerolling for better stats and Greater Affixes.
Material note: Rerolling requires Infused Horadric Resin, which comes from salvaging Talisman Charms and Seals at the Occultist. Pick up every charm and seal you find — even bad ones — for salvage fuel.
Craft Unique Charm
This recipe turns a Unique equipment piece into a Unique Charm (Talisman) with that item's power.
How to do it:
Place one piece of Ancestral Unique gear (900 item power) into the cube.
Add any 3 Unique Charms (they don't need to be the same type — use bad ones).
Select "Craft Unique Charm."
Receive a Unique Charm matching the gear piece's power.
Restrictions:
Only works for certain Uniques. Not all are supported.
Does not work for Mythic Uniques. Mythic Unique Charms can only be obtained as drops.
The gear piece must be Ancestral.
Why this is powerful:
This lets you deterministically produce the exact Unique Charm you want. If you need a specific Unique power on your Talisman, farm or craft copies of that Unique and convert them. You can also repeat the process to fish for a higher roll on the charm's power value.
Recycle Uniques (3-to-1 Unique Transmutation)
Place 3 of the same Unique item into the cube, and receive a new version of that Unique with fresh rolls.
How to do it:
Collect 3 copies of the same Unique item.
Place all 3 in the cube.
Select "Recycle Uniques."
Receive 1 new copy with rerolled stats and Unique power value.
When to use this:
When you've accumulated multiple copies of the same Unique from boss farming and none have good rolls.
When you want to fish for a max roll on the Unique power percentage.
Save Uniques that you'd normally salvage or sell — they become reroll fuel.
Tip: This also works with Unique Charms. If you have 3 of the same Unique Charm, you can recycle them for a fresh one.
3-to-1 Transmutation (Equipment, Talismans, Runes)
Place 3 of the same item type into the cube, and receive 1 random new item of that type.
How to do it:
Place 3 items of the same category (e.g., 3 daggers, 3 helms, 3 runes of the same tier, 3 Seals).
Select "3 to 1 Transmutation."
Receive 1 new random item of that type.
Best uses:
Seals: Transmute 3 Seals to try for one with 6 charm slots. The jump from 5 to 6 slots is a major power gain early on. Good seal rolls include crit damage, all damage, max life, attack speed, and skill ranks. The top stat is always active; the bottom stat only activates when your equipped set matches.
Runes: Combine 3 runes for a chance at a different one you need. There's roughly a 15% chance the output is a higher-tier rune.
Equipment: Combine 3 of the same equipment type for a fresh piece if you have extras taking up space.
Most Effective Transmute Strategy Overall
Not all transmutation recipes are equally valuable at every stage. Here's the priority order based on progression.
Early Progression
Upgrade Rares to Legendaries. Every Rare item you'd normally sell or salvage is a potential Aspect you haven't collected yet. Transmute them in bulk to rapidly fill out your Aspect library.
Reroll Set Charms. Your 5-piece set bonus is an enormous power spike. Don't wait for drops — reroll duplicates immediately until your set is complete.
3-to-1 Seals for 6 charm slots. Pick up every Seal you find and transmute them in batches of 3 until you get a 6-slot version.
Mid Progression
Amalgamate Nightmare Sigils into Escalation Sigils. Stop running standard Nightmare Dungeons one at a time. Five random sigils become one Escalation run with far better loot.
Upgrade Tributes for Undercity. Turn Magic tributes into Rare, Rare into Legendary, and Legendary Armaments into Mythic. Mythic Undercity runs have very high Mythic item drop rates from end chests.
Upgrade Gems. The nearly 50% stat increase between tiers costs nothing but 5 gems you already have.
Transmute boss trophies as they stack up. Free Unique rolls with zero effort.
Late Progression
Upgrade to Unique repeatedly. Strip items to Common and spam the recipe to fish for the exact Unique you need with a good power roll.
Craft Unique Charms. Stop relying on charm drops. Convert Ancestral Uniques into the precise Talisman power you want.
Recycle Uniques for max rolls. Once you have 3 copies of a Unique with mediocre power values, recycle them for a better version.
Reroll Set Charms for Greater Affixes and skill ranks. This becomes the long-term chase — a +4 skill rank Greater Affix on every charm slot is the ceiling.
Amalgamate Runes for missing Legendaries. If your build needs a specific Legendary rune, combining 5 Rares into a random Legendary is the most material-efficient path to getting it.
