Diablo 4 Litany of Sable Drop Boss, Location, Build & Farming Guide

In Diablo 4 Season 13: Season of Reckoning, unique class-specific weapons define the upper limit of endgame build power. This guide covers D4 Litany of Sable drop boss, locations, farming methods, and optimal build.

Diablo 4 Litany of Sable Drop, Farming & Build Guide

Litany of Sable is a unique one-handed dagger exclusive to the Warlock class in Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred Expansion and Season 13. Most notably, Litany of Sable serves as a core mandatory pillar item for the top-tier Dread Claws Warlock endgame build, one of the most popular and viable Warlock endgame setups in S13. Without this unique weapon, the build suffers from low Dread Claws burst potential, smaller AoE range, and noticeably weaker clearing efficiency. Only after equipping the Litany of Sable can the Warlock build reach its full potential, achieving fast screen-wide monster clearing and stable boss damage output for all Torment-tier endgame content.

The unique effect of Litany of Sable is that Dread Claws deals 100 - 120%[x] increased damage, and additional claws fire out when you gain a stack of Shadowform. This exclusive mechanic is the core strength of the dagger. The multiplicative damage boost greatly amplifies your primary spammable damage skill. Meanwhile, the extra projectile mechanic triggers with every Shadowform stack, massively expanding AoE coverage, adding extra cleave potential, and letting players wipe out dense monster packs far faster during dungeon and open-world farming. In Season 13, unique items will not come with guaranteed affixes; instead, they can roll from a pool of affixes just like all other gear, only the unique effect stays fixed. This means you can find or purchase the Litany of Sable with varying affixes and stats.

D4 Litany of Sable Drop Bosses & Locations

Litany of Sable does not drop randomly from regular monsters. According to player testing, this unique 1H Dagger can drop from Lair bosses: Grigoire and Andariel. Grigoire is a valid drop source for Litany of Sable. Many players report attempting up to 30+ Tier 8 Torment runs with no guaranteed drops, confirming the item has an extremely low drop rate.

Grigoire Location:

Hall of the Penitent in Dindai Flats, Dry Steppes

Lair Key/Material (Season 13 Updated):

The old 12 Living Steel summoning material requirement has been fully removed. Diablo 4 S13 launched a comprehensive Lair Boss Key rework that standardized boss summoning and looting rules across all Lair bosses:

1. Two universal boss key tiers replace individual exclusive boss materials: Lair Keys for all Initiate Lair Bosses and Greater Lair Keys for all Greater Lair Bosses. Players can freely allocate keys to any boss within the corresponding tier, instead of being locked to single-boss exclusive materials.

2. Fight-first, loot-later mechanic: Players can enter dungeons and defeat Lair bosses for free, and only consume keys to open the end-dungeon hoard chest for unique and rare loot rewards.

3. Tier classification & key requirement for target bosses:

  • Grigoire (Initiate Lair Boss): Requires 1x Lair Key per hoard chest run; defeating Grigoire rewards 1x Greater Lair Key

  • Andariel (Greater Lair Boss): Requires 1x Greater Lair Key per hoard chest run

4. Key material drop sources:

  • Lair Key: Dropped from War Plans, Helltide events, World Bosses, Legion Events, and Tree of Whisper Caches

  • Greater Lair Key: Exclusively dropped by defeating all Initiate Lair Bosses (Grigoire, Varshan, Beast in the Ice, Lord Zir, Urivar)

How to Farm Litany of Sable in D4 Season 13 LoH?

1. Find the Grigoire Boss

Grigoire is located inside the Hall of the Penitent dungeon in the Dry Steppes. The dungeon entrance sits directly south of Ked Bardu, the capital town of the Dry Steppes zone. Players can enter this dungeon on all Torment 1 and higher difficulty tiers to access the boss fight and unique loot chests. No pre-fight materials are required to spawn the boss in Season 13.

2. Loot Requirement

To summon no longer requires materials. To unlock Grigoire’s hoard chest for Litany of Sable drops, players only need to collect 1x Lair Key per run. Clear the full dungeon on Torment difficulty, defeat Grigoire, then spend 1 Lair Key to open its end dungeon hoard chest for unique item rewards. Completing a Grigoire run will reward players with 1 Greater Lair Key, which can be saved to farm Andariel (the secondary Litany of Sable drop source) for additional farming attempts.

3. Grigoire Core Fight Mechanics & Skippable Invulnerability Phases

Starting from Season 10, Grigoire cannot gain invulnerability for the first 10 seconds of every fight, letting players deal free opening burst damage. Players can completely skip Grigoire’s invulnerability phases by breaking its absorb shields quickly during key health thresholds.

When Grigoire drops to 2/3 health and 1/3 health, it activates a 5-second absorb shield. The 2/3 health shield equals 1/3 of the boss’s total health, while the 1/3 health shield equals 2/3 of its total health. If players break either shield within the 5-second window, Grigoire will not turn invulnerable, keeping damage uptime consistent for faster kills and more farming runs per hour.

4. Boss Ability Breakdown & Counter Play

Grigoire uses lightning-based attacks and environmental hazards throughout the fight. Learning to dodge these skills reduces downtime and lets players farm consistently:

  • Shocking Entry: Summoning Grigoire electrifies the entire room. Avoid all glowing electrified floor tiles as soon as the boss spawns to take no opening damage.

  • Spark Strike: Grigoire swings its mace and spawns floating lightning sparks across the arena. Move behind the boss to evade most incoming damage. This attack deals low damage and is easy to manage.

  • Empowered Spark Strike: An upgraded version of Spark Strike with a larger attack radius and knockback effect. Reposition carefully to avoid being knocked into environmental hazards and electrified tiles.

  • Thunderous Blow: Grigoire slams its mace on the ground and spawns multiple delayed lightning strike zones. Watch for red circle telegraphs and move away immediately to avoid heavy burst damage.

  • Summon Knights Penitent: At lower health percentages, Grigoire summons circling knight enemies that rush the player. Use your build’s AoE skills to clear adds fast while continuing to damage the main boss.

5. Environmental Hazards & Ultimate Ability

After dropping below 80% health, Grigoire activates permanent environmental hazards. Charged Pylons spawn around the arena and deal damage to players who pass through them. Stay near the room center for maximum movement options, and use Unstoppable effects to block knockbacks from boss attacks.

Starting at 60% health, Grigoire uses its ultimate ability, Galvanic Ascendance. The boss teleports away, charges all arena pylons, and electrifies 7 out of 9 total floor tiles, leaving only 2 safe tiles. Watch the tile pattern closely and reposition to safe zones. Keep your Evade or movement skills ready to survive this full-room mechanic.

Best Warlock Build for Litany of Sable in Diablo 4

The D4 Dread Claws Warlock Endgame Build is the best and most optimized build for Litany of Sable. This Abyss-themed build focuses on stealth positioning and massive screen-wide AoE damage. Litany of Sable is recognized as a core mandatory item for this setup, which greatly boosts skill damage and rotation smoothness. The build’s main damage skill is Dread Claws - Enveloping Terror, which creates circular AoE damage zones around your character and your summoned Greater Demon (Rampage - Abyssal Titan). This dual AoE stacking mechanic doubles damage output and covers large monster packs. In the late game, continuous Nether Step lets players reposition freely while moving summoned demons automatically, allowing instant screen-wide AoE bursts.
