Diablo 2: Resurrected has added a new and challenging endgame content with the Reign of the Warlock update: Colossal Ancients. Today, we'll introduce all the valuable rewards you can get from D2R Colossal Ancients, as well as how to get these new Unique jewels and beat these pinnacle bosses.
D2R Colossal (Uber) Ancients Pinnacle Bosses, New Jewel Rewards and Tips
Colossal Ancients (Uber Ancients) are a new pinnacle challenge in D2R 3.0, added with the Reign of the Warlock update. They are not a single boss, but a brutal gauntlet with three powerful Ancient bosses. This challenge is designed to test your build’s strength, your control of the character, and your strategy. Unlike many other endgame targets that you can farm repeatedly for loot, Colossal Ancients focus on high-stakes, deliberate combat. It is not just about dealing high damage—you need good positioning, careful planning, and the ability to adapt. If your build has weaknesses (like low defense or poor crowd control), this fight will expose them easily. Colossal Ancients are considered an Uber-tier fight, meaning they are among the hardest content in the game. They are perfect for players who want more challenge after mastering Terror Zones and other endgame content, and they also offer exclusive rewards that make the fight worth it.
How to Unlock Colossal Ancients in D2R?
Unlocking the fight requires farming Terrorized Act Bosses for five unique Statues, with strict prerequisites and crafting rules:
1. Reach Hell Difficulty, Act V: The portal to the Colossal Summit (the fight’s arena) can only be opened in Hell difficulty’s Act V. This is a requirement that must be met.
2. Farm Terrorized Act Bosses for Colossal Ancients Statues: You must defeat Terrorized versions of the game’s core Act Bosses to obtain five distinct statues (note: drop overlaps exist between some bosses, but each statue is tied to a primary boss):
Talic’s Anguish: Drops from Terrorized Andariel
Korlic’s Pain: Drops from Terrorized Duriel
Madawc's Ire: Drops from Terrorized Mephisto
Bul-Kathos’ Nightmare: Drops from Terrorized Diablo
Worusk's End: Drops from Terrorized Baal
3. Craft the Portal with the Horadric Cube Recipe: Once you have all five statues, place them in the Horadric Cube and transmute them. A red portal to the Colossal Summit will spawn—step through to begin the fight.
Important note: The statues are one-time use. This means you need to collect 5 new statues every time you want to fight Colossal Ancients. This makes the challenge more meaningful, as you cannot repeat it endlessly without effort. Also, remember that Terror Zones now let you earn consumables to choose which Act becomes terrorized. This can help you target specific Act Bosses if you are missing a certain statue.
D2R Colossal Ancients Bosses & Mechanics (How the Fight Works)
The Colossal Ancients feature three powerful bosses: Talic, Korlic, and Madawc. Each of the Colossal Ancients corresponds to a specific element—their immunities, attacks, and rewards all mirror these elemental themes. Talic the Defender is immune to and deals Fire damage; Korlic the Protector utilizes Cold spells and is cold-immune; Madawc the Guardian wields and resists Lightning damage. At the start of the fight, all three Ancients cast Enchant on themselves, which buffs their attack damage with their respective elemental damage. As a pinnacle Uber-tier encounter, each Ancient also possesses a unique Conviction Aura that reduces the corresponding elemental resistance of all players, mercenaries, and summons by 100%.
Throughout the fight, each Ancient summons up to 5 minions (commonly called "Protector Spirits," though they are simply barbarian minions tied to each Ancient). These minions are extra fast and share the same elemental immunity as the ancient they spawn from. The minions also inherit unique combat abilities from their respective Ancient: Talic’s minions use his native Whirlwind ability; Korlic’s minions employ Bash and Frenzy; Madawc’s minions cast Double Throw. A key distinction from Uber Tristram (where minions spawn infinitely) is that 5 is the fixed maximum number of minions each Ancient can spawn—for a total of 15 minions in the entire fight. Additionally, if you manage to defeat an Ancient quickly (before it spawns all 5 of its minions), all of its remaining minions will spawn immediately, which can lead to temporary crowd control pressure if unprepared.
A critical mechanic of the Colossal Ancients fight is their enrage system, which triggers under three specific conditions: when an Ancient’s health drops to 50%, when its health drops to roughly 25%, and when one of its fellow Ancients is defeated. This means the fight escalates progressively as you eliminate each Ancient: defeating the first Ancient triggers the first enrage phase (2nd Stage Abilities) for the remaining two; defeating the second Ancient triggers the final enrage phase (Final Stage Abilities) for the last surviving Ancient. These enrage phases unlock new, deadlier abilities that drastically increase the fight’s intensity.
Important Bug Note: There is a known inconsistency with enrage states: occasionally, an Ancient’s AI may prioritize attacking over triggering its enrage buff, leading to delayed enrage activation. This issue can also occur if you leave and rejoin the Colossal Summit or if the Ancients are offscreen from one another. Additionally, this bug (along with fighting near map edges) may prevent the exclusive Unique Jewel from dropping—stick to open terrain and avoid pausing the fight to minimize this risk (a future patch may address these issues).
2nd Stage Abilities (First Enrage Phase)
After the first Colossal Ancient is defeated, the remaining two Ancients enter their first enrage phase and unlock new abilities:
Talic: His Whirlwind ability now leaves behind a trail of fiery Dust Devils (or Fiery Twisters, as referenced in in-game footage). These Dust Devils deal significant Fire damage but are generally easy to avoid with basic positioning and mobility.
Korlic: At the end of each of his Leap Attacks, he casts a Cold Fissure—a cold-themed version of the standard Fissure ability. This creates dangerous, damage-dealing zones on the battlefield that should be avoided at all costs, especially since this ability pairs devastatingly with his Final Stage mechanic.
Madawc: His ranged attacks now cause Charged Bolts to emanate from the target on impact. These Charged Bolts ricochet toward nearby players, minions, or mercenaries. While they are rarely a threat in single-player (without summons), they can wreak havoc on minion-based builds or in multiplayer lobbies with multiple allies grouped together.
Final Stage Abilities (Second Enrage Phase)
After the second Colossal Ancient is defeated, the last remaining Ancient enters its final enrage phase, unlocking even more powerful (and often deadly) abilities:
Talic: When he finishes casting Whirlwind, he summons a Colossal Volcano at the origin point of his Whirlwind. This Volcano deals massive Fire and Physical damage in a large area of effect. Despite its high damage output, this ability is still manageable with proper positioning—simply avoid standing in the Volcano’s radius.
Korlic: With each of his Leap Attacks, he now casts Blizzard. When combined with his Cold Fissure from the 2nd Stage, this creates overlapping, devastating cold damage zones. To counter this, overcap your Cold Resistance (aim for 85%) and consume Thawing Potions to mitigate the impact of his -100% Cold Resistance Conviction Aura.
Madawc: He begins to evoke Colossal Thunderstorm, a more powerful version of the standard Thunderstorm ability. This ability deals heavy Lightning damage and can be particularly punishing in 1v1 scenarios (without summons to soak the strikes). Ensure your Lightning Resistance is well above 0% to survive sustained exposure.
D2R Colossal Ancients Drops & Rewards: New Unique Jewels (Reign of the Warlock)
The main reward for beating Colossal Ancients is exclusive Unique Jewels. These jewels are powerful, and they can only be obtained from this fight—making them highly valuable for endgame builds.
How to Get New Colossal Ancients Jewels in D2R?
When you defeat these Colossal Ancients, you will get one Unique Jewel. The jewel you get depends on which Ancient you killed last. Each Ancient drops one of two possible Unique Jewels—you cannot choose which one you get; it is random. If you kill Talic last, you will get either Defender’s Fire or Defender’s Bile. If you kill Korlic last, you will get either Protector’s Frost or Protector’s Stone. If you kill Madawc last, you will get either Guardian’s Thunder or Guardian’s Light. All Unique Jewels require Level 75. You cannot equip them if your character is below Level 75, so make sure you level up before farming these jewels.

How to Use Colossal Ancients Jewels?
You can only equip one of these Unique Jewels at a time. They work like Gheed’s Fortune Grand Charm—even if you have multiple of these jewels in your inventory, you can only wear one across all your items (weapons, armor, helms, etc.). This rule does not affect how many you can keep in your inventory or stash. The jewels have powerful, fixed stats (with small random ranges) and are strictly better than their Facet counterparts. Each jewel boosts a specific element (or physical damage for Protector’s Stone) and comes with extra benefits like more gold, better magic find, and extra experience gain. These effects can greatly improve your build’s strength and farming efficiency.
Tips for Beating Colossal Ancients
Even if you understand the mechanics and have the right build, Colossal Ancients can still be tough. Here are some extra tips to help you succeed:
Use the right build. Some builds are better suited for this fight than others. S-tier builds like Blizzard Sorceress, Fist of the Heavens Paladin, and Hydra Sorceress can handle Colossal Ancients with ease, thanks to their strong damage and survivability. These builds have good area damage for crowd control and single-target damage for the bosses.
Prepare your gear. Make sure your gear has high resistances (fire, cold, lightning, poison) to handle the Ancients’ elemental attacks. Also, focus on defense and life—you need to survive their powerful hits. Items with life steal or mana steal can also help you stay alive longer.
Bring a strong mercenary. A good mercenary (like an Act 2 Defender with Insight) can deal extra damage and tank hits for you. Make sure your mercenary has good gear too—ethereal armor and weapons can make them much stronger.
Practice makes perfect. Colossal Ancients are not easy to beat on your first try. Take time to learn their attack patterns, adjust your kill order, and fix any weaknesses in your build. Each attempt will teach you something new.
Do not rush. This fight is about patience, not speed. Take your time to position yourself, heal when needed, and avoid unnecessary risks. Rushing in will likely lead to death, especially when the Ancients get stronger.
