FIFA 23 Best 3142 Tactics & Formation: How To Make the Inverted Fullback for 3142 Formations

4/19/2023 3:00:25 PM

Inverted fullbacks are somewhat popular in normal soccer. Just look at what Pep has done in the past at City with fullbacks stepping up as a central mid when in possession (although now he uses a CB). This is also something that Arteta utilizes at Arsenal with Zinchenko acting as a center mid when in possession. Unfortunately, replicating this has never really been possible in FIFA. In recent years EA added an inverted instruction for fullbacks but it never quite works for having fullbacks step into the midfield. When we've used it we've barely noticed any difference in the runs fullbacks makes, we might notice one run per game where they noticeably cut inside rather than staying wide. Even with this though, they would often still run far forward rather than stopping in midfield to offer support. As a result, it's pretty much impossible to create an inverted fullback with the actual inverted instruction in any of the four or five-back formations. That's where these instructions for the 3142 come in.

3142 Tactics

  • Defensive Style: Balanced

  • Defensive Width: 50

  • Defensive Depth: 60-70 (personal preference as to how high or low you prefer to play)

  • Build Up Play: Balanced

  • Chance Creation: Balanced

  • Offensive Width: 80

With a lot of players central in this formation (Two STs, Three Central Midfielders) we like to try to spread them out.

  • Players in Box: 6

  • Corners/Free Kicks: whatever you like.

3142 Instructions (all instructions default unless specified)

We have these tactics set up for our left-sided mid to act as my inverted fullback because we wanted to use Guerrero. If you want to use a right-sided player as your inverted fullback simply just flip/mirror these instructions.

  • Left ST: Target Player

In this position, we used IF Tammy Abraham, basically, you want a clinical big striker here and will only want to lay off quick one or two-touch passes with them. If you only play with smaller agile/responsive attackers though we presume one of them could still work in this layoff role.

  • Right ST: Drift Wide, Get in Behind

We used FUT Birthday Werner here, you want a Pacy striker who is good at running the channels in this spot?

  • LM: Come Back on Defense, Free Roam, Come Short

We used POTM Guerrero here, this will be your inverted fullback so you want someone that can defend when playing as a fullback out of possession but someone that can hold possession and pass well when you have the ball and this player steps into midfield.

  • RM: Free Roam

We used FUT Birthday Pedro here, you'll want any type of winger/wide player that you like in this position.

  • Left CM: Drift Wide, Get Forward, Get into the Box for Crosses

We used FUT Birthday Bernardo Silva, essentially you want a bit of a winger/CAM type here, someone that can dribble and pass well to create chances with enough pace to hold their own. On defense, this player will serve as a left midfielder.

  • Right CM: Get Forward, Cover Center, Get into the Box for Crosses

We used FUT Birthday Nkunku here, you want an attack-minded player in this position that also has some defensive stats. On the rare occasion, we make subs we would replace Nkunku with Ballers Mount.

  • CDM: Stay Back While Attacking, Deep Lying Playmaker, Cover Center

We used the new Essien card in this spot, any solid CDM should work well here. You want them to have good passing as this will be your sort of pivot player in the middle to offer support and switch play.

  • LCB/RCB: Overlap

On the left, we used WW Tomori, and on the right Centurions Azpilicueta. You want players you're comfortable going forward with as at times with the overlap instruction they'll step up to provide a passing option to progress the ball up the wing. One should also be comfortable defending as a fullback because with these instructions the RCB will play as an RB when out of possession.

  • CCB: leave the default

We used WC Hero Carvalho here. Any solid CB you like should do.

  • GK: whatever you want

We deviated from our usual Cech and used Maignan for chem purposes, any GK you like will be fine.

How It Works

With these instructions, you'll end up defending in a 442 shape as the LM drops to become a left back and your LCM shifts over to defend as an LM (see image directly below). Once you recover the ball through your LM will continue to stay wide in a wide position while pushing forward and your LM that has been defending as a left back will step into the central midfield space vacated because of the come short and free roam instruction. While this happens the other center backs will shift back into a normal three-back setup. Here's what it should look like as this happens:

From there, once your team starts to get into shape, you'll have your target player to play off of. It's important that this player is on the same side as your inverted fullback so that your LCM, which at this point will be playing almost like a winger, has someone to play off of. Then as you build up with the ball the instructions on your other players will kick in. On the opposite side as your inverted fullback, the right striker on getting in behind/drifting wide will often start making diagonal runs into the channels. The right center mid will also then push forward to fill the space left by your striker running the channels. The right mid will then fill in any other gaps due to the free-roam instruction. Meanwhile, if you run into any dead ends your outside center backs will also push up to offer support due to the overlap instruction. The CDM on stay back and deep-lying playmaker will also make himself available to pivot and shift play around. Here's what all that movement should look like:

As far as general patterns of play, we tend to look for the CDM when we recover possession with one of our defenders. From there you'll often have either of your center mids in space to pass to and can look for a quick counter with your one striker running in behind. If that's not on though we'll look for our target player to play quick passes off of while the rest of the team moves up the pitch in support. If their defense is set, we also often tend to send a lobbed pass out from our CDM to either the RM or the LCM out wide. From there you can work it back across inside and find gaps. If you work the ball quickly from side to side you'll often end up with an overload against your opponent's back line, especially if they are playing four at the back, as you'll often have two STs, your LCM, RCM, and RM pushing forward.

It should be noted that if you are restarting play from a dead ball, your team will reset into the standard 3142 formats so your inverted fullback will be back out wide instead of in central midfield. Also, your LM won't always invert as a center mid but I would estimate that it does happen at least half the times you regain possession during the game if not more. This can make for some unpredictability as your LM and LCM will often interchange seamlessly with each other when you have the ball. To encourage the inverted fullback movement though, we'll often trigger a run forward with our LCM, or if we have the ball at their feet, run up the field with the LCM to encourage the space to open up for the inverted fullback.

We hope that helps a few people but it's all really down to an individuals playstyle and finding something that suits you the best. Buy Cheap & Safe FIFA 23 Coin go to https://www.aoeah.com/fifa-coins/fifa23-coins.
