Tornado Shot is a beloved Deadeye build that emphasizes quality of life and has an extremely high investment ceiling (dozens of mirrors). Most importantly, however, Tornado Shot also has a high investment floor (~40div) which is to say that without a big initial investment, Tornado Shot feels terrible. The reason a low investment Tornado Shot feels terrible is fundamentally due to how Tornado Shot works: Your character fires a cone of projectiles on attack. Each arrow splits into three arrows which are fired in random directions. There is a helmet lab enchantment which increases this count to four arrows.

If you try to play Tornado Shot with a low projectile count, you will find that enemies near the tornadoes can miss entirely due to the random dispersion of arrow splits. Damage consistency relies on saturating the entire screen with as many projectiles as possible, thus increased projectile counts are more important than nearly any other stat for Tornado Shot builds. The magic number of tornado projectiles (AFTER they split) to make Tornado Shot feel "good" is ~30 per attack, varying relative to your hit damage and attack speed (more attacks = more saturation). Please bear in mind that 30-splits is a subjective number I chose because it's the point at which my Tornado Shot feels like it can screen-clear 360-degrees around me. It is worth pursuing higher arrow split counts than 30 because higher split counts have a higher area of random arrow overlap, which extends the 360-degree clear to off-screen targets.

 

The reason Tornado Shot gets expensive is due to the difficulty of reaching screen saturation + good damage together. Remember that using an increased projectiles support gem takes up a gem socket and reduces your projectile damage. The following are sources of base projectile count:

  • Default projectile count (1)

  • Endless Munitions (2) - Deadeye Ascendancy

  • Lesser Multiple Projectiles Support (2)

  • Greater Multiple Projectiles Support (4)

  • Awakened Greater Multiple Projectiles Support (5)

  • Volley Support (2)

  • Greater Volley Support (4)

  • Bow attacks fire an additional arrow (1) - Bow and Quiver

  • Bow attacks fire 2 additional arrows (2) - i86+ Bow

The least expensive way to reach those 30+ splits without major sacrifices to projectile damage is to start by buying a helmet with the helm lab enchant. This reduces the number of base projectiles required to reach 30 splits from 10 down to 7.5. A Deadeye with endless munitions (+2), GMP (+4), and a +1 arrow bow, can achieve 8 projectiles, for which 8x4 = 32 total splits.

Final Tips

  • A Deadeye using the 32 split example above would instead have 10 projectiles x 4 = 40 splits, and therefore could achieve that 30-split number without the expensive (~5-20 div) helm enchantment.

  • A Deadeye using the 32 split example above could swap their GMP to LMP (-2 projectiles), regain +2 proj from the tree so they would still hit the 30+ split mark, and importantly they would drop the damage penalties and increased mana cost incurred by GMP.

  • Awakened GMP (over 50 div item) moves from major quality of life to minor quality of life.

  • A Raider / Pathfinder can achieve 30+ split projectile counts without needing to buy Forbidden Flesh/Flame for the Endless Munitions Ascendancy, saving these builds >60 divines and opening up tanky Raider TS builds and fancy Phys to Chaos conversion Pathfinder TS builds.

  • Scion Tornado Shot (+1 proj ascendancy) may be able to out-scale Deadeye TS dps due to the colossal crit multi bonus (~+200% bonus) using her Transcendent Flesh + Lethal Pride trick, Transcendent Flesh Endgame Deadeye TS struggles to get above 450% crit multi damage.

  • High investment TS builds (+2 arrow bow and a +1 arrow quiver) can drop AGMP/GMP entirely and focus on a new support gem, which will drastically increase damage per hit.
