FIFA 23 The Most Popular Promo Cards in WL - WC Hero, Prime Icon, Mid Icon

Many people have claimed that EA raised the power curve too much before TOTY and most of the new cards did not improve their teams. To prove this point, we drew inspiration from this post and recorded my opponents' squads during this weekend league where we finished 11-9 as usual.

Some background for the data:

-Drawn from 21 WL Playoffs games, including one 0-0 RQ from an opponent.

-Got 11 wins at 11-6 but lost the last 3 games when trying for rank IV.

-Played on the US West Coast from March 18 and 19.

-Faced a total of 149 unique players and 225 unique player+promo combinations.

Overall we're not surprised to see Prime Icons and WC heroes had the highest presence in opponents' squads. With the lottery SBCs and the new chemistry system, it is much easier to obtain these players and build hybrid teams around them. In addition, we found that:

-Of all non-hero & icon cards, TOTY is the most common promo despite having the lowest pack weight. Maybe this is because players that pack/bought these cards are more willing to play WL.

-If we consider all World Cup cards (heroes and current players) as one category, it became the most popular promo as 21% of the players came from it. Also, if we consider TOTY, TOTYHM, TOTY Flashback SBC, and TOTY Icons as another category, we would see 19% of the players came from it, showing that WC and TOTY indeed brought up the power curve by a lot.

-While people have complaints about the recent two promos, I still faced a high percentage of Future Stars and Fut Fantasy players. In the end, using new cards is always a main selling point of the game.

-Gold cards are not that rare at this stage of the game, especially for keepers, and of course, Mbappe.

-For pre-TOTY promos other than the World Cup, Centurion (mainly TAA), and Winter Wildcards are still quite popular. This helped prove the point that EA increased the power curve too quickly, especially around World Cup time.

Lastly, if we build a squad by the most common players I faced this WL, we could get a pretty strong team with a 433 formation:

-Keeper: Maignan.

-Defenders: Ramos, Lucio, Capdevila, Cancelo/Arnold (Tied).

-Midfielders: Zidane, Alonso, Modric.

-Attackers: Mbappe, Jairzihno, Torres.

TLDR: TOTY and WC are the biggest promos in FIFA 23 as most people are still using players from them for their WL squad but the latest two promos (Future Stars and Fut Fantasy) are not as bad as people claimed. Also, icons are more popular than heroes despite being harder to link this year.
