From your first fragile Ketch barely surviving coastal skirmishes, to commanding a fully loaded Frigate capable of erasing enemy fleets in a single broadside, every upgrade you make fundamentally changes how the game plays.  The problem is, Windrose doesn’t exactly explain any of this well. Picking the wrong ship variant, investing in the wrong components, or misunderstanding how naval combat actually works can cost you hours of grinding—and a lot of wasted resources. That’s especially true once you start dealing with faction blueprints, cannon variants, and advanced systems like ascension, where small decisions can massively impact your performance. Next, let's dive into everything you need to know about ships in Windrose. 


Different Types of Ships in Windrose

Windrose currently has 3 main ship classes, and each one comes with 3 variants that change how the ship plays.

 1. Ketch (Early Game Ships)

Starter combat ship / coastal exploration. This tier is basically a tutorial phase. Even though Blackbeard looks tempting, it’s a trap investment because you outgrow it quickly. Upgrading heavy cannons here wastes resources. Build Stock Ketch → rush Brigantine.

How to Get: 

Early main quest (“Need A Bigger Boat”)

Advantages:

  • Low durability

  • Limited firepower (3 cannons max)

  • Cheap to build

  • Quickly replaced

Variants:

-Stock Ketch: Balanced stats. Best beginner option.

-Brethren Ketch: Higher HP, slower. Slightly tankier but not impactful.

-Blackbeard Ketch: Fastest version. Can equip heavier cannons (24-pounders). BUT extremely fragile.

2. Brigantine (Mid Game Ships)

Core progression ship / real combat begins. This is where builds actually matter. The Blackbeard Brigantine dominates because speed = survivability (you dodge instead of tank). 6x 24-pounders = massive DPS spike. Enables aggressive playstyle. This is your first “real power spike” ship. Best mid-game ship = Blackbeard Brigantine.

How to Get: 

Brethren faction (Rep Level 2 + 1,000 Piastre)

Advantages:

  • Major jump in power

  • 6 cannon slots (huge upgrade)

  • Strong mobility

  • Expensive to craft

Variants:

-Stock Brigantine: Balanced. Safe but not optimal.

-Brethren Brigantine: Tankier, slower. Defensive playstyle.

-Blackbeard Brigantine: Fastest (22 knots). Can equip 24-pounders. Lower HP.

3. Frigate (End Game Ships)

Endgame warship / naval supremacy. This tier is all about damage vs survivability trade-off. The Blackbeard Frigate is the strongest overall because. 12x 36-pounders = absurd burst damage. Speed still matters even in endgame. HP (110k) is still good enough. This ship turns you into a glass cannon battleship. Best endgame ship = Blackbeard Frigate.

How to Get:

  • Rep Level 4 (Brethren)

  • 3,000 Piastre (very expensive)

Advantages:

  • Massive HP pool

  • 12 cannon slots (!!)

  • Extremely resource-heavy

  • True endgame investment

Variants:

-Stock Frigate: Balanced. Reliable.

-Brethren Frigate: Highest HP (tank build). Slowest.

-Blackbeard Frigate: Fastest. Can equip 36-pounders. Lowest HP.


Windrose Ship Components 

Every ship has 4 core equipment slots, and understanding priority here is huge.

1. Boarding Party Gear (Low Priority)

Upgrades your crew’s weapons during boarding. Only relevant if you board ships frequently or need it for specific quests. High risk, low reward. Slow compared to sinking ships. Not worth investing early/mid game. Optional — ignore unless required.

2. Hull Bracing (Top Priority – Defense)

Acts as your ship’s armor system. Reduces incoming damage. Higher tiers = significantly more survivability.

Example Perk:

Steadfast Hull

  • Damage reduction stacks

  • Consumes stacks to reduce burst damage

Enemy ships scale HARD in damage. Without upgrades → you get deleted quickly. MUST upgrade consistently.

3. Cannons (Top Priority – Damage)

Your main source of power scaling. 

Types:

  • 12-pounders (early)

  • 24-pounders (mid game)

  • 36-pounders (endgame)

Variant Cannons (Very Important)

Faction vendors sell special versions with perks:

  • Tempered Cannons - Bonus damage after delayed firing

  • Devastating Cannons - Apply stacking damage debuff (Raked effect)

This is where real DPS scaling comes from. Perks = massive combat advantage. Highest impact upgrade in the game.

4. Book Slot (Utility Perks)

Purchased from Smuggler faction. Provides passive bonuses.

Example:

Heal after sinking ships. Combat sustain boosts. Not mandatory early. Strong late-game optimization. Nice power boost, especially for survivability.

Ascension System (Hidden Power Spike)

Only applies to rare (blueprint) components.

Uses Tabonga Ingots

Upgrades:

Blue → Purple

Adds extra perk

This is your true endgame scaling system. Double perks = huge power spike. Essential for min-maxing.


Windrose Ship Gear

1. Cannons (Primary Damage System)

Most important offensive upgrade. Determine your damage output. Scale with ship progression (12lb → 24lb → 36lb).

Cannon Types:

12-Pounders → Early game

24-Pounders → Mid game

36-Pounders → Endgame

Unlocked via Buccaneers faction reputation. Applies stacking damage debuff (Raked). Best for sustained DPS (late game). Perfectly Ordered. Boosts reload speed after firing. Very consistent DPS increase (easy to use). Big burst damage after delay. More skill-based timing playstyle.

Best Cannon Choice:

Perfectly Ordered (highest lb your ship supports). Easy to trigger. Near constant +30% reload speed. Smooth and consistent damage output. Devastating becomes stronger for scaling fights.

2. Hull Modifications (Defense System)

Most important survivability upgrade. Increases damage resistance. Keeps you alive in longer fights.

Hull Types (Smuggler Faction):

Keelhold - Repair kits are not interrupted by damage. Best sustain option.

Standfast - Stack-based damage reduction. Good for burst mitigation.

Iron Resolve - More resistance at low HP. Risk/reward playstyle.

Best Hull:

Keelhold (Best Overall)

Synergizes with repair kits. Strongest in long fights. Becomes even better at Epic rarity (+30% duration).

3. Naval Tactics (Passive Buff System)

Utility slot (no upgrades, pure perks). Adds passive bonuses to combat, healing, or sustain.

Ambush - Huge first-shot burst.

No Quarter - Heal after sinking ships.

Stretch The Supply - +30% repair kit duration. +200% grog duration.

Shipshape - Out-of-combat healing (weak).

Silence The Guns - Debuffs enemy damage & reload.

Best Naval Tactics:

Stretch The Supply (Best Overall) - Massive synergy with Keelhold Hull. Boosts both healing and buffs.

Best for long fights and survivability.

 4. Boarding Party Gear (Situational)

Lowest priority system

Improves crew strength during boarding. Only 1 version (no variants). Can be upgraded (Lv1 → Lv15). Cannot be ascended. Boarding is slow and risky. Sinking ships is faster and safer. Low priority unless required for quests.



How does the Ship Work in Windrose?

This is where most players struggle — but it’s actually pretty simple once you get it.

1. Speed Control (Notch System)

Press W / S to adjust speed levels.More notches = higher max speed. Can reverse at the lowest level. Speed = survival. You don’t tank damage → you avoid it.

2. Cannon Directions & Reload System

Your ship has separate firing zones front cannons, left side (port), and right side (starboard). Each side has independent cooldowns. The optimal strategy is to rotate the ship constantly. Fire from multiple angles. Maximize uptime on ALL cannons. This is basically broadside cycling.

3. Frigate Advantage (Double Fire Rows)

Frigate has extra cannon rows. Can fire twice in quick succession. Massive burst damage. Huge advantage over smaller ships.

4. Ammo Types (Very Important)

  • Standard Shot

  • Highest damage

  • Longest range

  • Default choice

  • Chain Shot

  • Lower damage

  • Shorter range

  • Targets sails (NOT hull)

Disables/stuns enemy ships temporarily. Strategy is to open with chain shot → disable. Switch to standard → burst damage.


Windrose Ship Consumables (Survival & Buffs)

Consumables act like potions for your ship

1. Repair Kits (Healing System)

Types:

Basic Repair Kit: Cheap, low healing

Combat Repair Kit: Better healing. Mid-tier materials.

Master Repair Kit: Best healing. Expensive.

Key Mechanics:

Heal over time, not instantly. Can drop from:

  • Enemy ships

  • Ocean caches

You don’t always need to craft them. Looting is often enough.

2. Buff Consumables

Hard Grog: +15% damage resistance (30 min). Strong for noss fights and tough naval encounters. Often overlooked, but very efficient.


Best Ship in Windrose

The best ship in Windrose is the Frigate — especially the Blackbeard Frigate for most players. Highest firepower (up to 12 cannons, including 36-pounders). Massive durability compared to lower-tier ships. Designed for endgame naval combat, bosses, and fleet fights. Once you unlock it, it completely replaces everything else.
