How to use 4231 & how it works: In the 4-2-3-1 formation, the team typically lines up with four defenders, 2 holding midfielders, 3 attacking midfielders, and 1 lone striker. The main objective is to create a solid defensive base while having a strong presence in midfield and providing support to the lone striker in attack. The two holding midfielders, often referred to as the double pivot, are responsible for providing stability and protection to the defense. For the striker, get in behind and stay forward, we just want him to sit on the shoulder of the defense, hold the ball up when needed. But it's a pretty basic job for the forward. We have stay forward on the middle cam, that means at all times even when on counter attacks, we're going o have a striker and a central cam together. So they can play one twos off of each other and hold the ball up that way. For both of the lam and the ram, we are going to have come back on defense, that means that you're going to defend with two flat lines of four as well which is going to be super useful. And you're just going to have that extra sort of wide support when defending, so that you're not one-on-one with their winger and your fullback. So this is where we change it up a little, we have one CDM on stay back and then the other on balance. You're always going to have your destroyer back there when defending, but then you want your other creative midfielder to help out a little bit in the attack as well. You can have both of those on cover center too, there's absolutely no need especially when we've got our wide cams coming back to have them covering the wing. Finally, we are going to have stay back while attacking on the fullbacks, we've got enough whip using the lam and the ram that we do not need our fullbacks going forward.
