8/16/2023 11:31:07 AM

Path of Exile 3.22 patch is introducing new support gems to Trial of the Ancestor League, some are enormously powerful and some are really bad. In this guide, let's take a preview of the gem stats, enabling builds, and other details.

Path of Exile 3.22 New Gems Guide: Best Gems To Use & Best Uses of Each One

The Trial of the Ancestors League is the new challenge league that will launch with the 3.22 patch. It will let you enter a tournament in the afterlife where you will battle Chieftains of different tribes for favor and rewards. You will also be able to customize your endgame with 16 new Atlas Keystones and explore the return of The Forbidden Sanctum. What's more, there will be 14 new support gems as part of the expansion's metagame rebalance. These new POE items will more or less affect the game meta in the new league, so now let's take a close look at them!

We will not simply list all items here, but instead, dive into how will these new items affect our gameplay in Trial of the Ancestor League.

PoE 3.22 New Support Gems Stats & Uses Analyze

All skills will be rebalanced because of these new Support Gems? An early match of the PoE 3.22 Support Gems has been done by u/blvcksvn from Reddit, which tells us the possible best use of each gem:

Volatility Support

Combined with 20% Attack quality Ryslatha's Coil, this grants 134% more maximum damage and 80% less minimum damage for Phys hit/bleed.

Formula: (top end * 2.34) + (low end * 0.20)/2 for phys hit/bleed.

Also really good with Lightning (Doryani's Touch, Hyaon's), Voltaxic Rift, or Voidforge (or Added Lightning). Interacts with the lucky mechanic.

Best Use (Build To Use): Voice of the Storms is REALLY nice for Lightning lucky non-crits. Doesn't work for Voltaxic.

Guardian's Blessing

Holy Relic's regen buff cannot apply to itself, so it is not recommended unless you don't mind recasting it; it has no inherent regen. A Stone Golem is marginally better.

Another option is Summon Reaper, which is able to heal itself from minions (including those from Herald of Purity or Of Reflection glove enchantments)

A level 20 Animate Guardian with no gear has 11855 life and 153 energy shield with no other minion stats.

Animate Guardian takes 1717 physical damage per second.

With Meat Shield Support, takes 1239 physical damage per second.

With Doppelgänger Guise, takes 1017 physical damage per second. Counteracted by the 10% regen mod, fully nullifies DOT.

Best Use (Build To Use): Elementalist Golems. With Mask of the Stitched Demon and Grave Intentions fully nullifies DOT.  Minion Life Support is not recommended unless you can overlap life regen. Meat Shield will be better overall, especially if a minion can taunt.

Flamewood Support Gem

Cannot be self-triggered using reflect or self-hit mechanics, so Decoy Totem is likely the best option unless you're scaling a hit-based fire spell totem. Ignite is probably better though.

20/20 Decoy Totem has 3475 Life (96% increased totem life from gem). Flamewood deals 4761 base damage.

25/20 Decoy Totem has 6480 Life (116% increased totem life from gem). Flamewood deals 8878 base damage.

30/20 Decoy Totem has 11831 Life (136% increased totem life from gem). Flamewood deals 16208 base damage.

These numbers further scale with % increased totem life. It is unclear whether your damage stats will affect the Avenging Flame's damage.

For comparison, Fireball deals 2870 base damage at level 20 and 6440 base damage a level 30, at 0.75 cast time, and with one less support gem.

Best Use (Build To Use): Scion Chieftain or Chieftain is necessary if you want to use a non-hitting non-Decoy Totem like Rejuv/Devouring Totem as a taunt was removed from Totem Mastery.

Sadism Support Gem

BaseDuration / (1 + (FasterAilment%)) = ModifiedBaseDuration

Factoring both Faster and Less Duration:

Ignite: 4 seconds > 0.45 seconds

Bleed: 5 seconds > 0.56 seconds

Poison: 2 seconds > 0.22 seconds (please don't use this with Poison unless you're going Low Tolerance stacking)

Best Use (Build To Use): Sadism Support might boost the popularity of ignite builds, especially with the new Chieftain rework

Frigid Bond Support Gem

Deals about twice as much damage per second as Cold Snap per level, with one less support gem.

Best Use (Build To Use): You can use this gem to enhance your cold damage over time builds or to support your allies who use such builds. You can also use it to create a beam of cold damage between you and a linked ally that can hit multiple enemies. However, you should be careful not to break the link by moving too far away from your ally.

Sacrifice Support Gem

Sacrifice adds 8.8% of your life as added Chaos Damage.

On a 5000 life character, that is about 440 added Chaos Damage.

On a 10000 life Dissolution of the Flesh character, that is about 880 added Chaos Damage.

On a 20/0 Spell Totem or Shockwave (1478 life), that is about 130 added Chaos Damage.

For comparison, a level 5 Awakened Added Chaos adds average 237 Chaos Damage.

Best Use (Build To Use): This gem can be used to boost your chaos damage output at the cost of some life. You can use this gem with spells that have high base damage and no reservation, such as Essence Drain, Soulrend, or Dark Pact. You can also use this gem with life recovery or life leech effects to mitigate the life loss.

Spellblade Support Gem

Rebuke of the Vaal (~600 mixed damage) = 810 mixed damage (use with Shaper of Flames/Inextricable Fate/Original Sin)

White Wind (74.6 phys + 255 cold damage) = 344 cold damage, 101 phys damage

Vulconus (228.6 phys + 200 fire damage) = 309 fire damage, 270 phys damage

Nycta's Lantern (156.6 phys + 137 fire damage) = 322 fire damage, 368 phys damage (including Battlemage)

Hyaon's Fury (90.6 phys + 325 lighting damage) = 439 lightning damage, 122 phys damage; Essentia Sanguis very similar

Bino's Kitchen Knife (291.6 phys) = 394 phys damage

Best Use (Build To Use): Works with Energy Blade. Does not work with Wings of Entropy.

Controlled Blaze Support Gem

Optimal APS appears to be around 3.25 (0.31 attack speed), which will net you 72% more ignite damage. (13 stacks, 282% more ignite, 39% less)

Best Use (Build To Use): However, since the highest ignite will persist over lower ignites, it is not necessary to match this number exactly. Maintaining a good balance of attack speed and not hitting too many targets will depend on the skill being used; much easier to have too many stacks while clearing vs bossing

Corrupting Cry Support Gem

Corrupting Cry inflicts 4 stacks, max 10. 601.5 physical damage per second. This is just under twice as much as Corrupted Blood from Corrupting Fever (335.4), with 1 less support gem.

With 30% Warcry CDR from Natural Authority and 72% from Deep Breaths:

General's Cry 4 sec > 1.8 sec

Enduring Cry 8 sec > 4 sec

This can fully maintain full uptime of Corrupting Blood stacks with

General's Cry alone or with Efficacy/Swift (doesn't need warcry cdr)

Enduring Cry with both duration clusters + Efficacy

Enduring Cry with both duration clusters + Efficacy + Swift + mastery

Enduring Cry with one duration cluster + Efficacy + Swift + 20/20 Inc Dur + mastery

Exerted attacks inflict 1 stack to the first enemy hit.

Best Use (Build To Use): This gem can be used to deal with physical damage over time and reduce enemy healing with the Corrupted Blood debuff. You can use this gem with warcry skills that have a large area of effect and exert attacks, such as Ancestral Cry, Rallying Cry, or Infernal Cry. You can also use this gem with physical damage builds that can benefit from the extra damage over time.

Trauma Support Gem

Best Use Case: Trauma cannot support Boneshatter. Trauma stacks should be shared, so it is possible to ramp up stacks with a fast skill like Flicker Strike before using a slower, harder-hitting skill. Note that you can only gain 1 Trauma stack per skill use.

Best Use (Build To Use): Trauma Support might make strike skills more viable for bleed builds, especially with the new Atlas Keystone that gives you more damage per ailment on enemies.

Devour Support Gem

Devour Support might be useful for minion builds that need more sustain and clear speed.

Best Use (Build To Use): This gem can be used to sustain your resources and prevent enemies from using corpses. You can use this gem with skills that hit enemies and can kill them quickly, such as Blade Vortex, Cyclone, or Arc. You can also use this gem with builds that have low life or mana regeneration or that use blood magic.
