POE 3.19 Boneshatter Build Guide: Why Melee DPS Is Deceiving on Bossing

We decided to play Boneshatter Slayer for BPL, our PoB damage was around 10-12M DPS+, so we thought Uber Bosses would be a joke, finished all of the Uber Bosses, and it was an eye-opening experience. We go over why true melee is terrible for bossing in poe.

 

About Boneshatter Build

-Boneshatter has a ramping mechanic where you have to build up trauma stacks, which grant you more damage.

-Near impossible to stun Uber Bosses with a non-crit build.

-Slow Attack Speed of around 5 attacks per second.

-Quite tanky due to 100 percent spell suppression, fortity, 10% reduced damage while leeching, and overleech.

-Only around 4k life, which is pretty low to do ubers.

Main Problem – Damage Uptime

-Uptime on path of building assumes you are just auto attacking the boss constantly, which is impossible with everything you have to constantly be dodging.

-Totems make up more than half of your damage.

-Path of building assumes 50 rage berserk being active.

-Takes time to build up frenzy charges with Poacher’s Mark.

-Pride is not always at maximum effect.

-Boneshatter has to take time to build up twenty Trauma Stacks.

Melee Performance on Uber Bosses

-Unless you are super tanky, you constantly have to dodge, leaving you with very little to time to attack the boss.

-Totems die instantly on fights like uber elder.

-Some fights have literal DPS checks, making the fight near impossible like uber searing exarch.

-No easy access to Lethe Shade makes it very difficult. (Not a problem on lightning strike)

-Uber sirus has so much ground degeneration, making it very difficult to even attack the boss.

-On uber eater of worlds, you constantly have move in order to not get one-shotted by tentacles.

Final Tips

Melee goes from garbage at low investment to immortal in the end. The amount of non-DPS mechanics that are mandatory for melee characters compared to spell characters is crazy.  You have to have insane AOE, strike range, life regen, life leech, fortify, sap, attack speed, reduced stun threshold, armor, evasion, and additional elemental resists, not to mention accuracy.  Then, you are finally ready to hit the boss at 100% uptime.

-True melee like Boneshatter has huge disadvantages for bossing until your single target 10M+ without any conditionals.

-Lightning Strike and Helix are able to damage from a further distance away.

-Having to rely on totems for a majority of your damage makes your damage uptime pitiful.

-Higher attack speed will make melee feel a lot better.

-Focused mod is extremely strong because you want to maximize your damage windows.

-Melee will make you better at bossing.

-Insane enemy elemental damage output. We can just run around with less than 50% Phys res and we're fine, but 80% ele res is apparently worth nothing.

-Due to issues with elemental damage, an investment in passives and gear is necessary to mitigate incoming damage

-Melee has to stack more layers of defenses than casters/range because we are in MELEE range, shocking init (lately we feel like spell suppression is mandatory as well, especially on uber elder/shaper )

-Melee has more mechanics/buffs to keep up in order to keep our damage high

-Moving constantly lowers damage, there is no way around it. If you have to dodge away or around the boss your DPS drops.

-Stacking HP is just not cost-effective. As a matter of fact, stacking one type of defense type just does not work.

-Melee does not scale nearly as well as spells.

-Slayer can fix the issues with DPS due to the 20% HP instagib/instakill/culling strike mechanic. The issue is that you have to get there first.

-Boss phases are not the issue, the issue is the fact that the game forces you to fight the arena instead of the boss. This is an H&S game, so if we cannot effing fight our enemy, we can't kill them. This becomes apprent while you fight Sirius/Exarch.

-In general, a player needs to invest a mad amount of poe currency to be able to safely boss and map at a high level. Regardless of what playstyle they prefer. (there are exceptions to this, but not too many )
